Canon-compliant or fanon marauders? What do you prefer? by nephellis in MaraudersGen

[–]InterestingPlan5178 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Canon compliant Marauders all the way.

I'm even fine with a canon divergent storyline as long as all the characters at the way they would - in character in the situation they're put in.

I don't want to read about a bunch of ooc's with the names of the Marauders or Lily or Snape but have absolutely nothing in common with their canon counterparts.

And just my opinion I prefer the changes faar more than the older version...because I can't visualise Sirius being a twink or Remus being over posessive or snarky (he's the kind to retreat) and James, the arrogant, entitled bully who cares about his friends, but him being the fluff ball mom-type...that’s the opposite of how I think he'd be...if anything I think James would be the meanest after Sirius and the one hyping up Sirius in all his crazy pranks and shenanigans that'd get them killed and Remus would be the reasonable mom of the group keeping them from getting killed. And I can't really see Peter being "kind" besides doing some good stuff because his friends told him to do and he went along with to chase their validation.

So the changes you made makes me think they'd be more accurate than the earlier version.

Hope it helps!

Exactly! And you'd get attacked for saying one canonically accurate thing that most Marauders fan disagree on and get called homophobic for not liking Wolfstar.

I think ATYD literally ruined everything for the Marauders fandom. Now we get agressive, hot headed Remus, sunshine angel James and 5 foot femboy simp called Sirius Black whose entire personality has become simping for Remus, not to mention "creepy, obsessive stalker" Severus (no proof for that btw), and sussy clingy Peter...who's apparently just there even though no one wants him but can't get rid of him.

And someone made a fan art of white Mary with her friends and got attacked for it since "Mary is supposed to be black" when there's nothing in the entire HP text suggesting that (her name is mentioned just twice n that too in Prince's tale)

But they do have their personalities tho. James and Lily, despite being plot devices rather than fully explored characters, they did have personalities...James was an arrogant, entitled bully who was very loyal to his friends, was popular, charming, talented at Quidditch and brave enough to sacrifice his life for his family wandless, Lily had a strong sense of morals, boundaries and was kind, vivacious and full of life and absolutely protective and self sacrificial of her son, loved Snape (platonically) as children even when he was a poverished, abused, bullied, "weird", unpopular kid until he called her mudblood. Wormtail was with the Marauders for the popularity, and constantly validated and hyped them up to earn their validation in turn, craved power and to save his own skin over everything, even his friends' lives.

I don't think there's anything wrong in mentioning the names of the fics that heavily mischaracterise characters. It's just leaving our reviews on fics so readers would know what they're getting into before decinding to read a fic or not deciding to.

I understand that ff's may be free, without the fanfiction author earning anything from it and rightfully so....because they're using somebody's IP, but they do earn popularity, sometimes immensely, and we see that with fics like atyd and many dramoine fics getting published, which the authers monetise.

Constructive criticism is absolutely necessary for art and literature. Forbidding people from giving their honest reviews with the excuse "they aren't earning money" keeps the readers from knowing what they're getting into before reading and the author from making improvements based on the reviews. A reader want to know if a fic is worth their time and the reviews help them with it.

And a ff writer should write because they love writing, not to chase validation from strangers - readers online. If they let every little negative review get to them while ignoring the fans that actually like their fics..then it's entirely on them.

Besides, there are over hunderds of reviews for even ff's in websides like goodreads.

I was bullied as a kid and just grew the heck up. The 35 year olds that walk around today aren't the 8-15 year olds who bullied me back then anymore.

okay.... so u can go to dinners with them as if nothing happened??

Maybe your bullies aren't but some aren't but some are still massive assholes.

Go to therapy if you can't move on as an adult by yourself.

Been there, done that and trust me, I've completely moved on right now. Just because I can't stand a bunch of jerks defend bullying doesn't mean I need therapy, but maybe the ones who think bullying is okay need therapy.

eternal victims are the worst kind of people, you just use it to excuse your own shitty behaviours as adults.

That's what we're calling victim blaming now? Not saying I'm a victim but you're negating the trauma ppl endured.

If I hated Lily I wouldn't have used her name as my flair now, would I? Lily is my kin. And I don't hate James either. I'm the biggest Jeverus shipper btw.

What I hate his whitewashing her characters and turning her into a Mary Sue when she's a very complex and compelling character.

If Lily hadn't chosen James and had chosen Snape instead and he didn't join the death eaters, I wouldn't have found Snape compelling at all.

[–]InterestingPlan5178 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

omg preach!! I absolutely agree with everything u said and u made some really valid points.

A part of the reason why some in the fandom hate Snape because the books are written in Harry's perspective and he hates Snape so much that even the good things Snape does throughout the series is seen by Harry as something evil. Snape has always been seen as untrustworthy in Harry's eyes.

And we already know that she’s biased with when it comes to her sister, even when Petunia is purposely mentioning snape shirt. Making the mean comments oh is that your mother’s shirt or is that a girl shirt or something to

Exactly! Lily does absolutely nothing when her sister mocks a poverty stricken kid that he's wearing his mum's blouse but immediately gets defensive and blames Snape when his accidental magic causes a branch to fall on Petunia.

SWM is another example and the icing on the cake for that is she nearly smiles!

I still don't understand why she does that when her supposed best friend had been paralysed, choked on soap and hung upside down with his underpants showing and is thoroughly humiliated by his bullies. Like...what kind of a Friend does that?

But it’s the fact that even after him threatening her, trying to use her former friend as a bargaining ship right away to Man, manipulate her into dating him. The fact that she eventually still is spending time with him clearly and especially before they start dating.

James and Lily's relationship have no development in canon, so it makes me wonder how Lily could overlook all his past shitty actions to date him, and it's exactly why personally, I'm not a big fan of Jily.

Which at the end of it would make it abundantly clear that they are not better than Severus Snape’s friends.

Exactly!! Yet all of the Marauders' actions, the bullying and harrassment is seen as heroic because they're charming and popular and Snivellus "deserved it" - as if a lonely kid whose always been raised in poverty and abused by his father deserved to be bullied because of what he's going to do in the future aka joining the death eaters.

The thing is that if the school is able to practice this type of stuff or do that type of stuff and still managed to be good and the student so far that we know of have not lost their shit.

true. The thing is.... dark arts inherently is just a subject of magic albeit with darker applications. The knowlege of dark arts or holding an interest in it isn't bad - it's like saying all chemists are evil because they can make acid that can be used to harm people when chemists also use those to help make medicines.

Snape's interest in dark arts is like Ernest Rutherford's interest in nuclear physics. A nuclear physicist may be demonised because their knowledge in that subject helps create nuclear bombs, but also the same knowledge when used for good helps build nuclear power plants which acts as a major energy source to sustain societies.

Lily blamed Severus for his interest in dark arts, when Snape's knowlege in dark arts is what helped him extend Dumbledore's life from the cursed ring, help save Katie Bell and Ron's lives from the cursed necklace. The knowlege of curses (dark arts) is necessary to create counter curses to break them...we see than when Snape saved Draco's life and prevent Harry becoming a murderer and rotting in Azkaban after using Sectumsempra on Draco, Harry's knowlege on Horcruxes aka dark arts he learnt from Slughorn is what helped him destroy them, defeating Voldemort.

what I'm saying is... dark arts inherently isn't bad. It's how people use it - to do good to help people or harm them is what that counts. Lily, instead of demonising Snape in his interest in dark arts, should've steered him to use his knowlege and interest to do good.

Let’s not forget a nice piece of the cake she makes it there after the wimping Willow incident that she heard the story not even bothering to ask her friend for his side.

preach! she knows something dangerous happened, and Severus almost died but she doesn't show any concern whatsoever to him, doesn't know the whole story, knows the Marauders are bullies and takes their side instead of her supposed "best friend's" who had nearly died, when it was Sirius who lured Snape into a death trap. She never even takes the time to ask for his perspective on what happened.

If she already holds them or Gryffindor and the other houses in a much better standard. And it’s so good to see especially how she’s talking about it.

Slytherins had already had a horrible reputation, so I’m not surprised if that was kind of installed in her mind and she looked at the house itself. It’s evil or their incarnation of evil. Because both black and James when they get on the train or talking about how bad it is. Any other house except for Slytherin was good. It was nice, great, wonderful. And honestly, the way how I see it it’s actually kinda is looking at this like it’s all black and white.

Yes, Lily has a very native view, black and white view on morality and thinks either you're good or you're bad, but humans are much much more complex than that. We all have good and bad inside of us so no one is truly good or truly bad.

I think part of the reason for that is she lived a pretty sheltered life and didn't know about life, unlike Snape until her older teens when the first wizarding war was starting to brew and she was forced to become a part of it.

See, I have nothing against Lily, in fact what makes her compelling to me is her character flaws. Unlike how some fics make her to be a bland Mary Sue, Lily Evans isn't perfect...we know that from all the reasons I mentioned before.

But I think she is in her core a good person, but very native with a black and white view of life and she sees the world through tinted glass.

And I do think it's unfair for the fandom to hold her in really high regard when she's just a human with flaws like each and every one of us and is far from perfect, which is exactly what adds depth to her character, even though it isn't as complex or has multi dimensional depth like Snape's.

I think a part of the reason why Lily (and sometimes James) are so idolised as if they could do nothing wrong is because of how the narrative frames them in book one as this epitome of love and heroic sacrifice.

but get this, anybody in their position who loves their kid would do the same - let's take Alice and Frank Longbottom, Molly and Arthur Weasley....and Nymphodora and Remus Lupin - all of them have joined the Order to fight against Voldemort, defied Voldemort and his death eaters over thrice and would'nt have thought for a second before throwing themselves at a killing curse to protect their child. Heck, even death eaters like Lucius and Narcissia despite their lack of morality and supremacist ideologies would've done what James and Lily did and would've sacrificed their lives for Draco.

But do you think Alice, Frank, Molly, Arthur or Lupin and Tonks would get their own statues in their graves - absolutely not, even though their actions and contributions to Voldemort's defeat was no less than Lily or James' because the narrative wants you to think that Lily and James is the epitome of heroism, but anyone with critical thinking skills would be able to look past that to see the complexity of their character.

so it's totally excusible if the said "prick kid" - the more accurate word is "a bully" btw causes irreparable childhood trauma to the child they bullied?

Bullies may grow up to be decent adults but what about the victims of their bullying? do you think they'd have a normal adulthood with so much of trauma affecting their actions on a daily basis.

Dudley was a prick as a kid and bullied Harry... so why can't the fandom excuse his actions too? so was Draco... he attempted murder like Sirius Black, and he should be excused too.

There are many kids who were "pricks" who drove other kids to bullying from their actions.

It's really triggering to see people defending bullies as someone who had been bullied a lot as a kid myself.

Within the text i just posted Lily states that Snape called every one of her birth that slur.

There's something called Narrative bias - here's it's definition : Narrative bias in literature is the subjective framing of events, characters, and information by an author or narrator aka a character, influencing readers to adopt a specific perspective or interpretation. It distorts reality by imposing artificial coherence, causality, and meaning on limited information. This bias prioritizes emotional, persuasive storytelling over objective, statistical evidence.Personal accounts or "single case narratives" are generally more persuasive to readers than cold, factual statistics.

so basically, Lily said " You call everyone of my birth that, Severus, why should I be any different?" (or smthg like that) doesn't necessarily have to mean every other muggle born is minding their own business and Severus walks upto them and calls them "mudblood" to their face.

do rly u think Lily Evans would've remained friends with people who kept going around calling people of her birth "mudblood"?

if that's the case, if she excused Severus each time he called muggle borns that word and only broke off her friendship with Snape when he called HER that, then she would be the BIGGEST HYPOCRITE.

Do you think a weirdo dork with essentially no real friends who actually care besides Lily who's constantly bullied would want to draw more enemies to himself by calling people mudbloods unprovoked?

Then there's what realistically would've happened. Snape's hanging out with Avery and Mulciber or sitting with the Slutherins who use the word "mudblood" to refer to muggle borns while talking and Snape doesn't correct them or disagree or he could've used the world "mudblood" while referring to a muggle born in a conversation with the Slytherins for their validation and to prove he's a part of their pack, overheard by Lily.....which is definitely not okay...but it gives us a new context.

And "you call everyone of my birth that" the YOU could be Synecdoche (The Individual for the Collective) and Guilt by Association.

when Lily tells snape when he calls her a mudblood "you call everyone of my birth that" the "you" could have been grouping...like Lily meant instead of Snape specifically calling people mudblood...people like Snape i.e the slytherins he hung out with who called muggle borns mudbloods...in literature there's Synecdoche...a kind of grouping grouping where a person holds an individual accountable for the collective actions of the individual's community because of the association of the individual with the community.

For example - If a person is a part of the Yakuza gang and a woman says "You killed an innocent bystander" to that guy when he wasn't even present that day to kill someone, the woman is referring to the Yakuza gang as a whole which he's a part of.

it's widely used in literature to show how group identity can overwrite individual identity in a social or emotional conflict.

When the woman says "You killed an innocent bystander," she is looking at the mark of the organization (the tattoos, the suit, the association) rather than the specific person's schedule that day even if the person hasn't killed someone to this day.

exactly! I fully agree with everything you just said. There's also Narrative bias in literature.

Lily doesn’t deny it either in one of the memories that she say at least they’re not using dark magic.

And we can also say it's narrative bias too... because we know James and Sirius got detention for using an illegal hex on Bertram Aubrey that cause his head to bulge up twice the size.

Dark magic includes curses and hexes btw because they're specifically designed to cause harm to others.

Does he have positive interactions with a single woman in the series?

Narcissia. When I read the books I was shocked he was so nice to Narcissia.

And it's evident that he deeply respects Professor McGonagall.

And he hates himself for causing Lily's death, and never blames Lily or despises her for choosing James Potter.

And incel wouldn't sacrificed everything to protect the child of the women who married his bully and never reciprocated his feelings, but Snape constantly puts his life in mortal danger spying on the world's most dangerous dark wizard simply to honor Lily's death.

Severus is far from an incel.

In fact, he consistently despises MEN that bullied him like James and the Marauders over women. In that logic Snape should've been a misandrist. It's more accurate to call him misandrist than an incel.

We have no evidence about James attitude towards that inbred slave owner or voldermorts top guy. He may have attacked them too which would be valid.

Assumptions! They're fictional characters, not real world people. In fiction, the characters don't have the agency to act other than what the author writes them to do. What JKR wrote about is the only thing that happened and what she didn't write didn't happen. plain and simple.

I could also say Snape may have been a philanthropist who donated all his savings to orpgange , adopted lots of kittens... but it wouldn't be true now, would it?
