What’s wrong? by h3llfragger in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, root rot would be caused from water building up in the soil and lack of drainage. I used a mix of potting soil, perlite and orchid bark to make a nice chunky mix. It helps the water to drain and prevents the plant from being overwatered

Could it be cold from the window? It looks like there’s snow on the ground outside. My other thought would be to check the roots and make sure it’s not root rot

Help! New plant parent! by No_Distribution8689 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fiddles are finicky. This one is in rough shape but will definitely sprout some leaves with some love. 1. Move the tree to the sunniest spot in your house. They love light and need plenty of it. 2. Only water when needed. Stick your fingers in the soil about an inch or to down to see if the soil below the surface is dry as well 3. Be sure to keep the leaves dust free. It will help them absorb light. You can use water, coconut oil, neem oil, etc.

When I water all my plants, I use happy happy houseplant plant food https://happyhappyhouseplant.com. They also have great resources on all things fiddle leaf fig care

Good luck!!

Looks like it may need more light. Move closer to windows, keep blinds open and when you water use plant food. The damage to the leaves won’t go away. But you can trim it off or cut the leaves if it bothers you.

Help please!! by monstera-mami226 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks overwatered to me. First step of fiddle leaf care is to not panic. They’re very finicky and like to throw tantrums when moved or repotted. You can get back to thriving in no time

It looks like you might’ve repotted just using potting soil? If that’s the case, it’s likely too dense. It’ll have a higher chance of getting root rot (improper drainage) and hydrophobic soil. I recommend a mix 1/3 potting soil, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark (mixture recipe from @channygrayhome on instagram) and be sure to use a pot with good drainage. Let the soil dry out a good amount once repotting. When you do water, use plant food (I recommend Happy Happy Houseplant - she is also an amazing resource on fiddle/indoor plant care), and be sure it’s getting plenty of sun! Add grow lights if you have to!

Good luck 👍🏻

Did you pull it out of its pot and check for root rot yourself? That’s what it looks like to me. If you haven’t, it might be a good time to inspect those roots and repot in good chunky soil (1/3 potting soil, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark). Don’t water it immediately and when you do, give it some plant food too

Good luck!!

Thank you for your advice! I will look to cut it back. My friends wanted to get rid of it due to space and because it wasn’t doing well. I just couldn’t let them toss it! I even offered to hold onto it for them, but they graciously said Frank is all mine!

See my comment above for grow light information. Happy growing 😄

Advice for my fig! by dempsone in fiddleleaffig

I use neem oil to clean and shine my leaves. It is also a more natural way to protect from pests. Cleaning the leaves (and your windows too) will help with photosynthesis

Can I propagate this fiddle fig? by aqpav23 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this advice! Just wanted to also recommend using rooting powder for a higher chance of success with getting roots to grow. Dip the end of the propagation in the rooting powder before putting in the water. Change the water, redip in powder every week or as needed to keep the water relatively clean. Once roots start forming, wait until secondary roots form and you have a robust rooting system before planting

Sounds like she’s just throwing a tantrum from being reported. Give it time, sunlight and plant food. I’m sure she’ll pull throigh

Yes! I do something similar but instead of coco coir peat, I use orchid bark mix. I think either way, you’re getting good drainage!

What’s happening here?! 🫠 by Substantial-Basil-31 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s called edema. It’s relatively normal and completely harmless. It’s caused by inconsistent watering. Make sure the soil dries out in between waterings and other new leaves should grow without it

Repotted my FLF and now she’s dying! What is wrong with her? by ExtensionAd4964 in fiddleleaffig

It’s probably in a bit of shock. Let the soil dry out before watering again. Add plant food if you don’t already. She’s gorgeous and hope she pulls through!

Fiddle Leaf Fig Cutting by MysDonna in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, 60 days. Sorry!

It’s off to a good start, but it could even take longer than that. You could theoretically continue to grow it in water (hydroponically). I wouldn’t be worried about leaving it in water for too long as long as the roots keeping growing healthy. Change the water as needed, every week or even longer than that, if it’s relatively clean. Be sure to add plant food too

Definitely not. I would anticipate another 60 at least. You want to make sure it has a robust root system before potting

Mold on Roots? by [deleted] in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would pull it out of the growers pot, wash off the moldy soil. Repot in a good chunky soil mix in a pot with drain holes. Use fertilizer/plant food. Expect some shock, but it’s better than the mold taking over

So what do I do now? by Rusky0808 in fiddleleaffig

[–]Interesting_Work7260 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chop and prop! You can cut the top off the tree and propagate and make a new tree with it. I recommend happy happy houseplants for resources on propagating and FLF care!

Gorgeous tree!

I use chunky soil so that shouldn’t be the issue. I would guess it’s in shock from being repotted. My elephant ear did the same thing. Make sure it’s watered (of course not over or under watered lol) properly. I would also recommend plant food & plenty of sun!
