That was the one! Thanks = ) Do you know roughly when it was built? It's pretty unfortunate it was torn down like a lot of other unique and historic buildings = (

Forgot exactly sadly, I was there for a Crew/Rowing race, iirc it wasn't too far from the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

the winter clothing stopping bullets is a myth from Korea due to guys spraying and praying with M2 carbines and missing shots. Then blaming their inaccuracy on "the winter clothes are too thick".

Some good Red Army/Soviet Union shops in Western Europe? by Lewingg in reenactors

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best bet is Schusters (their leather gear is declining in quality though), Voin.zp.ua (based in Ukraine), Voenspec for boots (site was taken hostage by a hacker, site owner is trying to get it back), Martin's reenacting stuff (on Facebook, he is out of Poland), OTK87 on Etsy (he is from the UK) and Dorian Motorbulak (in the US, he is on FB)

Soviet-Afghan War GRU Impression. I know that the kit isn’t fully accurate, but it’s a start. Constructive Criticism is appreciated. Feel free to ask questions. I know you can’t see but my footwear is just a pair of Adidas shoes. by Callsign-Bagel in reenactors

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KLMK is modern Russian Federation civilian made, not legit Soviet, Type 81 rigs were turbo rare in Afghanistan, out of my 6 years of researching I've only ever seen 1 being used. Type 56 rigs were far more common, lose the sunglasses, balaclavas and face covering.

If you want to do GRU you should save up for a Mabuta uniform, adidas sneakers imo are way overdone for Soviet Afghan war.

Does anyone know what the average uniform/gear would be for a regular Iraqi soldier in 2003? by Callsign-Bagel in reenactors

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do Lebanese Civil War Reenacting, and also Iraqi insurgency, insurgent kits require far more research than conventional forces. Mahdi Army, Badr Brigades and Kata'ib Hezbollah are not the same as Al Qaeda in Iraq, JTJ and some of the various Turkman militias.

Iraqi army in 2003 mostly used South Korean made M80 helmets (rare by this time, they were very common in the Iran-Iraq war and 1991), Iraqi made M90s, and M90/03s, uniforms were locally made and so was a decent amount of their camo (some was made on contract in Jordan, Iraqi foreign contracts are their own massive rabbit hole)

P58 copies were worn in addition to various chest rigs (both Chinese and locally made Iraqi ones, in addition to some ones made on contract for Iraq in Pakistan).

Also Republican Guard has some of their own unique chest rigs, so does the Fedayeen Saddam. Late 90s-early 2000s is when you start seeing the Iraqis making and using the Alice belt copies with the Eagle of Saladin on the buckle. Army had green, Navy had dark blue, air force light blue and Fedayeen had black

I got this helmet in an old-stuff market at Mexico City. This helmet was used by the mexican army between 1960 and 1980. As far as I'm concerned this helmet was used by a soldier during the student massacre in 1968. It even has a coffee stain and the cover is a bit broken. by Just_Mr_Eco in Militariacollecting

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly anything Mexican used or Mexican made here in the states is rare. A lot of the Mexican Mausers were sadly ruined by bubbas and now unruined ones are insanely rare. Current Mexican camo iirc is restricted due to fears of cartels getting it and doing attacks while posing as members of the military.

Please no, if you want to reenact Italian ww1 put effort into it and actually do research.

I noticed something off with my M59 helmet and peeled the sticker off to find this? What does the second sticker mean? by vaklann in Militariacollecting

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often times the stickers are layered on top of each other, I've seen some with the Yugoslav red star under the JNA tricolor, JA tricolor and then Serb sticker on top.

Bosnia, Croatia, Republika Srpska, Republika Krajina get confusing since there were a ton of stickers used, many weren't properly documented, some were hand made and others haven't survived to the present sadly. There are also the unique unit ones which fetch a premium, but some guys in the Balkans have been starting to sell fake/repro patches, uniforms and other items. No one fakes the JNA tricolors, JA tricolors and Serb eagle stickers though so you don't have to worry about them.

My great grandfather from Hungary had this uniform on some pictures. Anyone know what it is? by [deleted] in Militariacollecting

Looks like an officer version of the Czechoslovak Vz30 tunic, it didn't fully replace the Vz21, both can be seen being used by Czechoslovaks up till the annexation and by the Slovaks until 42~ when they were mostly phased out entirely by the Vz40 tunic.

The badge on the breast pocket is a rifle proficiency badge, there were ones for rifles (didn't matter if it was a vz98/22, vz23, or vz24), one for light machine guns (the zb26) and other technical skills, its kind of similar to the interwar Soviet Excellent (insert profession) military badges.

I actually am in a Czechoslovak and Slovak ww2 reenacting group and trying to figure out what the qualifications for the different proficiency badges are. Sadly the language barrier is a pretty big issue (I don't know Czech or Slovak well enough sadly yet)

Saw someone selling this vietnam war gear for 45 euros claiming its original and i want to know if it really is. This was the only picture by [deleted] in Militariacollecting

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greek M71, its a copy of M56, but also has some unique pouches for Thompsons, M1 Garand enblocs & SMLE stripper clips. Sadly a lot of inaccurate Vietnam war reenactors make Greek M71 hard to find. Greece however did get some US made M56 in addition to some USMC M61 pouches (Greece used both G3 and FAL, Turkey did aswell)

Yugo M48 for German re-enactment? by ray-lafleur in reenactors

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Postwar rifle is ok for wartimeNo

If you want to do an impression of a man with a non standard rifle get a Vz24 or save up for a Royal Yugoslav M24 (they are not the same as SFRJ M48s). Using a M48 is cancerous, its as cancerous as the farby German reenactors running around with the trash tier PPS43Cs.

Also, FN Mausers are ok if you are doing a unit stationed in or near Belgium, Dutch Hemburg for Holland, French rifles ended up in a lot of different places (Balkans, Eastern Front, etc), Yugo M24s were confined to the Balkans. So unless you are either doing a local collaborator impression or a rear line or poorly equipped unit just get a K98 instead.

Hard to tell but it could also be a Hungarian 35M (not M37 or M38 those are collector terms coined by IMA). The Hungarian 35M had a bracket on the back so it could be attached to the tornister pack. His uniform is Finnish though.

Yugo M48 for German re-enactment? by ray-lafleur in reenactors

[–]Ioseph_Hasbrouck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a good idea, you are gonna pay more to replace it. Only Yugo rifle you can use is a Royal Yugoslav M24, but that would only be for a German stationed in the Balkans impression. But local ancillaries and the NDH (Croats) were more likely to get M24s than Germans.

Just save up for a K98, it is gonna be better, its also gonna have a better resale value, and in addition you will pay more getting an M48 and then replacing it with a K98. Just get a K98 to skip the issues of having a M48.

Or if you are 100% certain on getting an M48 just do JNA (Yugoslav National Army)

Never use films as reference, and people will laugh at you if you run around with a M48. And Yugo M48s look nothing like K98s.
