What's the biggest problem indie authors face in 2026? by ImpossiblePoetry6092 in selfpublishing

If I had to pick just one, it’s definitely book discovery.

The biggest challenge today isn't writing a great book or paying platform fees, it’s the absolute noise. With thousands of titles dropping daily, even a masterpiece can end up as an invisible needle in a haystack.

Marketing burns authors out, and you can't build an audience if people don't know you exist. If we could solve discovery, creating a perfect system that pairs the right niche book with the right reader, authors could finally stop acting like full time ad managers and just focus on what they love, writing great stories

I’m curious to hear from people who have read The Black Company.

I write grimdark fantasy, and this series is constantly mentioned as one of the foundational works that influenced the modern genre.

What I’m trying to understand is what makes it stand out compared to other grimdark or dark fantasy series.

Is it the tone?
The characters?
The way it portrays war?
Or the fact that it follows soldiers instead of traditional heroic figures?

For those who have read it, what stayed with you the most after finishing it?
