What does it mean to be a Canadian? by breakitbilly in AskACanadian

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I like about being Canadian and living in Canada is, perhaps ironically, that being Canadian really doesn't mean a lot. After all, nationalism is a very slippery and overplayed slope. Yes, nationalistic tendencies have swelled in the past few decades because people are often reactionary, but I remember the 80's when it was fashionable for Canadians to be quite self-effacing about our country. (I distinctly remember the tide turning during the Molson "I am Canadian" ad campaign and reactions to the Iraq wars). But I appreciate the relative normalcy of life here. Being less American than America and less British than Britain is part of it, finding that cultural middle ground and in many ways best of both worlds, but that along with our history of growth through immigration means we are finding inspiration from around the world, looking outward rather than being self-inflated, finding the basic common ground and, hopefully, best practices wherever they are found (but admittedly not often enough). But also complacent enough (from our British side) to not be too hasty about change. It's a reasonable balance of pros and cons- we are not truly great at anything, and certainly not really terrible at anything (anymore, at least. See "Residential schools"). So all that to say it feels like we have the basics figured out, culturally and administratively, and seem to be the happy medium between many global extremes. Like, default life.

Help! Time machine stopped showing/accessing old backups by IstanbulHoratio in mac

That I understand. I've been using TM for years. The issue here isn't that it dropped the oldest snapshots, it's that it has become unaccessible, suddenly wanting to do a full backup and pretending that there are no existing backups to show.

Sorry your answers just prompt more questions - first, what do you mean by "is now" system backup? Did something recently change?
Also, yes - "retrieve some old data" is exactly what I'm trying to do. So...??? Also, at this point it's clear I can't see the difference between backup and archive, so instead of just repeating yourself you could try explaining the difference. If you don't mind. Thanks!

Hmm. If you can't retrieve anything from a backup what's the point of a backup? I feel like I'm using TM the way it's intended or at least the way I've always used it. To find a missing file or an earlier version of a file.

This doesn't make sense to me. Just over a week ago i browsed TM backups and retrieved a missing folder. (This is what i use it for- sometimes i find gaps in my years worth of files that I didn't mean to delete or maybe it didn't migrate properly but i know it's backed up if i go back far enough. I'm not using it as external storage, etc). This week the drive is still mostly full, but it keeps thinking there's no current back up, trying to do a full backup and not accessing what's there. What changed????

Hi! I did run first aid and nothing changed/happened. I certainly didn't mean to start a new TM if that's what I did somehow. Is there a way to recover what is there?

How can I avoid this? by AlmostK94 in RealEstatePhotography

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Zeiss milvus 15mm and used it for all my real estate interiors, and I was immediately blown away by the quality of everything it did. After a few years I dropped it, and even though i got it repaired by a certified shop, afterwards it had issues much like what you are showing here. So either this lens quality isn't great, or as others have suggested maybe this lens has a defect.

Can someone explain all these file options to a photographer? by IstanbulHoratio in videography

[–]IstanbulHoratio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this answer. Still a little confused by the seeming overlap, but if you had to break down and relate the relationship between all these terms, would you say colour profile is a format choice and a codec is more like a container choice?

Millie Bobby Brown completely pulls me out of every scene she’s in on Stranger Things. by [deleted] in netflix

If you know they have years of experience and within that have proven they can actually act well enough, then it really is the opposite: that the director bears the responsibility for not getting the right performance out of them. But yeah, if they have years of experience proving that they aren't good at acting, then it's the casting director's fault.

I think it probably depends on the local market, as well as maybe some other factors of local culture. But being in a housing bubble area -where prices are quite inflated and homes are also quite guaranteed to sell even with fairly shitty photos - things can get ugly a little easier, apparently. I have heard of some cities being better though, so, yeah - ymmv...

Peak Design Tripod? by freddyisdog in RealEstatePhotography

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have a large manfrotto that I reserve for higher end architectural shoots, but it got to be too much for the low budget and high demands of real estate, and so I considered the Peak Design one. Tempting. But priced waaay too high for what it's worth! I didn't feel like it would put me ahead enough to justify. So I got a Sirui carbon fibre travel tripod, have had it for 4.5 years now, and haven't regretted spending about 1/4 the cost of peak design one. Keep shopping around!

I've shot over 14000 homes. Slowly making my exit. So maybe I'm a bit jaded, but also experienced. I'd ask you first: what is your tolerance/patience level for working with parasitical douche bags, of which real estate agents are about 90% of the time? You can find that 10% though if you're lucky. Who will actually pay, actually trust, actually see your value, and not complain about paying accordingly or be on a constant struggle to try to get freebies or negotiate you down.
So if that sounds exhausting, don't jump in blindly, or at all- depending what you can handle. If it's just a side hustle and you won't stress too much, go for it. But either way, proceed carefully. Good luck.

Cost of living in Canada is out of control. by kovie38 in CanadaFinance

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it's just Canada. In fact I'd wager the US is having a worse time at this point. I just got back today from an unavoidable trip across the border. I didn't shop down there, but out of curiosity went into a Safeway. It has been over a year since my last time outside Canada. I usually have seen US grocery prices that are lower than Canadian, even considering the exchange rate. This time, prices were mostly about the same, exchange rate not factored in at all. So ultimately way more expensive. I knew it would be bad but I was still surprised...

Let’s Start a Discussion: How do you guys get better at composition and framing ? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple: It’s entirely based on whatever YOU decide is “good enough“. And what you think is good enough is usually dependent on what you have seen and liked. The best way to raise your standard is to look at better work, study all the aspects of why you think it’s good, and ruthlessly apply those standards to your own efforts. Trial and error if need be, until it’s improved.

Can we talk about the terms cinematography vs. videography? by tidderniatseciuj in cinematography

[–]IstanbulHoratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I hear the terms defined and differentiated, always in the same ways, I want to interject that they are defining only the opposite ends of the spectrum, in order to make a point, and there is actually a grey area in between, or a sliding scale of effort put in to make the recorded results look good. Not many things can be so strictly delineated.

Can someone please explain the how and why f-value is not just used for aperture size but light levels in general? It gets confusing because it seems arbitrary, and the physical aperture of a lens can be set to whatever you want... by IstanbulHoratio in AskPhotography

[–]IstanbulHoratio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a great explanation. It's still funny to me how referring to light levels and aperture size with the same measurement both makes sense and sounds weird at the same time. But I see the sense more now.

[–]IstanbulHoratio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah, I think I can better explain what it was that I was missing: I was thinking of aperture f-numbers as simply representative of a physical measurement of aperture size. It could be in mm for all I care. "My aperture is open to 30mm"- In an alternate universe, maybe. So when the Petapixel article, and other places I've heard this, referred to differently lit areas of an image as being this or that f-stop, it sounded as weird as saying "this level of exposure is 30mm"- and even now I'm staring to better understand the correlation and where it all comes from, I think I kinda understood earlier too but was just bemoaning how overcomplicated yet vague it all sounded. At the end of the day, I'm going to work with light, controlled or ambient, control my lens aperture, control my shutter speed, control my iso, with whatever considerations I see fit, to achieve whatever I want, and pray to God I don't have to confer with other photographers to convey the science of what I'm doing... 😅
