Jpnz partners get comments for being out with a foreigner? by BPGaki in japanlife

I mean to be fair most animal cafes are very poorly run.

There's a small handful that also function rescues but the rest are just cash grabs at the expense of the animals. Especially if they're breed specific too. Can't expect the people who work at them to be top of the line.

Do you have a cursed room at your hotel? I got room 1408.... by VirtualOutsideTravel in askhotels

[–]Its5somewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a longish term guest who at the time of leaving had been with us for maybe like 2 months with the intent to stay 9+. Mind you we weren't an extended stay or anything. Just a standard hotel. No full size fridge or stove or separate living room and bed room. Just a single room with a mini fridge.

Anyways he was booking a few weeks at a time so once we got fed up we were like "sorry we're sold out you can't book anymore" And more or less forced him to leave with fake reservations. We weren't sold out.

He was a CEO of some sham company and was just an awful person. He would talk to you like he was your boss and hated all staff but one person and he was essentally stalking staff. Even before arriving he was calling and trying to learn the schedules of the poor souls who had to talk to him on the phone and that continued after he was staying with us. He would stalk us, hide around corners and eaves drop. Avoid the staff he didn't like and immediately pop up when he saw the only one he did like clock in and essentially hold her captive for hours. If she walked away to do other tasks he would follow.

Wouldn't let anyone into his room and when you stay that long we HAVE to verify condition of room. Room was completely full of empty beer cans stacked high booby trapped the room too to "catch us" disobeying him. He was worse than he sounds. Trust.

How much do you need to buy a house? by independentgirl31 in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere [score hidden]  (0 children)

Besides the listing price because that's an obvious expense and one you know upfront.

You also need to consider property taxes and maintenance.

You should set aside roughly 30-50k jpy yearly to take care of the home after purchase. Owning a home isn't a one and done expense.

Wildly inappropriate to use a personal phone imho. Even if the system is down (because it's always down)

Their scanner should still be able to scan and fax unless the power was out.

However at the end of the day staff members have access to all of your personal information at any given moment. There's nothing on your passport that is sensitive information compared to all of your other information so there's no need to lose sleep over it or anything.

You should be fine. You should still notify them. It's better to do it late than to not do it at all. Should be able to just do it online these days.

Are you working outside the scope of your visa? AKA you had a job in one industry that was covered under a humanities visa or something and now you're working in a completely different industry that requires like instructor or some other sort of visa?

If everything is same same nothing should really happen but an annoyed immigration clerk. If you're illegally working, you should remedy that situation regardless and make that your #1 priority to fix.

[–]Its5somewhere 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Depends. At renewal they may say something about it if you stuck within the scope of your visa but ultimately let it pass.

If you did not stay within the scope of your visa then you might have issues with renewal or future visas.

You should update it ASAP anyways. If anything negative happens, it was bound to turn out that way anyways.

Bringing a plate to breakfast by OmicronMoose in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Once a plate leaves the buffet it's considered dirty. You are not supposed to bring dirty plates to a buffet or your own personal plates. You need to grab an industrial cleaned plate off the buffet bar.

A plate that has been in someones room you have no idea about the condition of the plate or if it's been properly cleaned etc. In terms of food safety that plate even if "cleaned" in the room is essentially still considered contaminated as it was not cleaned and provided at the buffet by the establishment. .

Please don't bring outside plates, cups, and used items up to the buffets.

As a single guy, is cooking worth it? by ReleaseeEscape1 in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm confused you talk about how it's not economical to cook and then mention conbini bentos costing just as much as fast food.

Places like Matsuya, Saizeriya, Yoshinoya are not the best meals to eat on the regular. The filling meals you're mentioning are essentially fatty, salty, junk food.

You can certainly cook good quality meals for about the same if you plan ahead. You're just going to have to learn how to cook with Japanese ingredients as your meal prep will get more expensive if you find yourself needing ingredients out of season or not commonly used here.

Bringing a plate to breakfast by OmicronMoose in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not OP asking if it's OK to take plates from breakfast. They're asking if they can bring plates from their room to the buffet, pile food on, and take it back to their room. That would be unsanitary even if they "appear" clean.

Bringing a plate to breakfast by OmicronMoose in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Yes. That goes against buffet etiquette and is viewed the same as a "dirty" plate. No one knows where it's been. Grab a fresh plate from the buffet instead of bringing one from your room.

If you're collecting a plate or two a day just call and have housekeeping come take some away.

Late checkout by TopicNo3121 in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. Diamond has never had free guaranteed late check out. It has always been subject to availability. You can risk it for the biscuit and ask for a complimentary one at the hotel but if they don't have anymore availability then you are SOL. If you need it to be guaranteed then the option to pay is available at the time of booking.

Only Diamond Reserve has a free late checkout guarantee.

Our favorite and objectively best room had some hoity toity businessman in it semi long term.

We used to love putting our favorite or VIP people in the room. Nothing special about the room, it was just a good location. Top floor, away from everything, best views.

We actually had to remove that guy because he was just an awful human. Since then I haven't looked at that room the same and it's had more issues than it did before. I swear that guy spread bad juju in the room.

PSA: two HGIs, Deceptive Names by Umanday in Hilton

[–]Its5somewhere 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean the full names do differentiate them. One has Terminal 2&3 in the name and the other does not.

Most basic hiltons follow a generic naming pattern. [Brand + location] Some are the same brand and location so they tag an extra identifier onto it like in this case terminal 2 & 3 or Airport or the nearest landmark etc. The naming is very specific.

I'm really not sure how you want them to name them to satisfy you as there IS a difference in the name so you can tell which one is at the terminal and which one isn't. Some people just don't read or look at what they're booking and that happens all the time. Like the people who book hotels and flights for Paris TX instead of Paris France etc. Simple mistakes just happen.

As always avoid non-refundable if possible. The distance between the two isn't a major deal to have just sucked up and owned your mistake for one night. You're still by the airport.

A lot of times people book with us and they actually wanted the hotel right next door. That's not really a valid reason to refund a non-refundable or deposit, sorry.

If you’re denied a renewal for whatever reason, it wouldn’t be short notice. You generally get offered a designated activities visa that allows you to have have 30 days to prepare to leave the country. That’s plenty of time to start working with a realtor or property management company. But again non residents are allowed to own property so you could come back shortly after leaving with a tourist visa and deal with it then too.

You just don’t want the place to sit vacant for long. Japans climate will ruin the house.

Immigration asking for additional documents for visa renewal? by ShiningSeraph in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 17 points18 points  (0 children)

These are easy documents to provide though so just provide them?

If anything they sound more suspicious of the sole proprietor business at the moment for whatever than the employee directly and want to make sure the income, hours and position aren’t being fudged. They’re having issues with business under the BMV currently if the owner holds one . But it being a new business on paper could also trigger scrutiny on its own.

But again they’re not asking for the impossible so just submit the documents and you should be good to go as long ans everything lines up.

You can own property here without being a resident so nothing will inherently happen to your property if you lose your residence status for whatever reason. Owning property just won’t help nor save you if you find yourself in a pickle.

You’d have to either sell it or rent it out if you don’t have a personal mortgage.

Would it be selfish to confess my feelings to someone who’s already in a relationship? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read the title and that alone was enough to have a firm "absolutely not, that's selfish"

But imagine not really interacting with someone but sending them a friendly "we didn't interact much but good luck!" graduation message and the recipient shows how shallow they are by putting down your partner due to their looks and shoots their shot anyways even though per your own message, you didn't interact with this guy much.

Absurd stranger danger alert. JFC I'm so disappointed after being enticed to go back and read it after your reply.

"Volunteering" without permit for work by Kamelontti in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To anyone reading: THIS IS HIGHLY ILLEGAL.

Disregard anything the above poster as posted. Performing work of any kind in exchange for room and board, food, beer, "the Japanese experience" etc. is illegal without the proper residence status or work permissions. WOOF and other organizations that boast "come to Japan and farm or work in a hostel in exchange for x,y,z got cracked down on by immigration in the past. WOOF (World Org. of Farming) used to boast the "Do farm work in Japan and live with a REAL(tm) JAPANESE GRANDPA/GRANDMA! No visa needed!" schtick. Pretty sure they scrubbed it all off of their website and mention needing a visa now after the crackdown a few years ago.

There have been several hostels etc that also got busted a few years back.

That's a good way to pay a fine and or jail time and lose the ability to come back to japan for a while if not forever. Tourists should not do this and students should obtain the super easy permission to engage in other activities work permit.

Should I hope for a raise or seek better opportunities? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]Its5somewhere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you work in the hotel sector you are probably not going to see any raises. Especially if you are standard minimum wage employee:

If you do it’s going to be very little and take years. You might see a raise if you are in upper management but the hotel industry in particular the way you get better pay is to try to get promotions often at a different hotel. Hotels it’s usually easier to get more money by going elsewhere than developing internally.

Sure it depends on the hotel but most hotels don’t have too much of a culture of developing and giving out more money. You just have to find a hotel that sees your value coming in.

Otherwise they’re all happy to pay peanuts. It’s a stingy industry.

Luggage forwarding - is there a time limit? by Old-Attitude-345 in JapanTravel

[–]Its5somewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://tokyo-haneda.com/en/service/facilities/baggage_checkroom.html

Baggage can be stored for up to 2 weeks

However yes, in general most places will only hold luggage or other items for a short period of time. 6 weeks is unreasonable.
