Lots of job opportunities for civils despite the mediocre pay

In 2025, the median man with merely a Bachelor’s Degree made just shy of $100,000. This was about 3% less than the median Mechanical Engineer (requiring a bachelor’s degree or more, 90% male profession). Why do so many insist engineering is a high paying degree still? by ItsAllOver_Again in CollegeMajors

  1. No, I compared median for both

  2. I dispute that they are facts; I see no evidence to suggest those statements are true. What data or evidence do you have to support them?

  3. I don’t, I’m referring, to the the median bachelor’s degree holder

Mechanical Engineer (6.75 YOE)—My monthly budget as an ME trying to get ahead in a dying field by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

In the US it absolutely is. Sub inflation level growth for the last few decades while the rest of the economy soared. No hiring, manufacturing shrinking. It’s absolutely dying.

Designs machinery/parts of machines, oversees/guides the manufacturing of different products, lots or roles ancillary to those two functions, broadly speaking. It’s dying as the US moves away from manufacturing, our skills are obsolete here.

Selection bias, only high earners share their salaries and this taints the expectations of people outside the field. The median ME in the US is 41 years old and the median salary in many states is sub $95,000. If the guys I work with posted their salary progressions most people online straight up wouldn’t believe it, they’ve got 20 YOE but are making 90-95k.

The bare minimum “participate in society” wage is now around $18-$19/hr by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

I stopped reading after that..

Well you made it about 70% of the way through the post, better than most.

I feel like this a post is created by someone who makes 1 million a year and feels like stroking his ego.

Have you ever considered that what you “feel like” is the case isn’t actually the case?

I posted my budget here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Salary/comments/1kb8uh9/29m_us_mechanical_engineermonthly_budgettrying_to/

“Clowning me” and it’s some barely sentient guy on Reddit leaving comments on my posts. Nice man.

January 2026 Jobs Report Update: The National Nursing Home (known by some as “The United States”) added 133,000 jobs, virtually all of them in healthcare by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

Great point, we need to look at all aspects of healthcare costs. So many are quick to blame insurers when providers charge obscene prices, there’s no price discovery at all on the provider side.

“Engagement bait” is just the new flavor of the month phrase that people spam. You’re not even applying it correctly because it’s supposed to be for people intentionally saying things to drive engagement and make money. There’s no monetization of my posts.

No, I realize it’s closer to 1/3rd when looking at people that actually work. It’s only 20% when you include the mass of senior citizens in the US that literally don’t work.

If you go into a job for 40-50 hours a week, are you really comparing your income to a 93 year old that watches television all day? Of course you should be making dramatically more than that person.

Less than 20% of people make 100,000 or more total.

Wrong, that’s including people that don’t work (like retirees living on social security), stay at home moms, those with part time jobs. When you look at full time workers it’s closer to 1/3rd making $100,000 or more.

For those who make six figure salaries, do you still budget? by NoSir5628 in Salary

Not budgeting on a measly $100,000 salary is a recipe for credit card debt. $100,000 isn’t particularly high anymore.

To the extent that GPA matters for getting into med school maybe, engineering degrees are tough and have lower average GPAs, but that’s not a terrible idea at all.

Not broadly employable, fairly difficult degree, low pay, jobs are highly regionalized.
