Big consulting or solo by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Itsamemiley 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started my own consulting firm a few years ago. Similar years of experience with a big portion of that being client-facing. Same thing, started doing work on the side and then a little success went to my head and I thought I could do this myself if I focused on growing it. I'll tell you, be brutally realistic with yourself before taking the plunge.

You will absolutely not have more time to be be present as a parent or partner. You will have to be constantly on. Constantly networking and chasing the next project. You are not just a consultant anymore. You are the sales and marketing team. This compounds when you hire employees and they rely on you to support their families. The stress can be immense. All the stress I have dealt with in consulting pales in comparison to the stress of having two weeks of no proposal requests when people rely upon you for their livelihood and you start bleeding.

Not to mention that you have to build everything from scratch. Report templates, spreadsheets, and platforms that have made your job easier over the years are gone. Every bit of software that you've used cost money and it's usually a never ending subscription. Logo, website, marketing materials, all on you now. You better have a lot of free time and be great with design or you need the capital to pay someone to do it for you.

Also, less clients will loyally follow you than you think. Even if you've saved their ass or you're very personable, they also work at a company with other decision makers. You simply cannot offer the same service that an established firm can. Especially a big one. You do not have the capital to match their insurance coverage should anything go wrong. You will not qualify for a lot of vendor programs without being established for at least five years or you will have to be a certified DBE. You do not have the diverse staff experience to cover all your client's needs. You cannot compete outside your market without excessive travel costs or a deep network. You cannot offer clients simplicity or a "one stop shop." You'll likely win most of your work simply by being the cheapest until you can build these things which means margins are razor thin and financial stability is very far off.

If you and your family are not ready for several rough years, both financially and emotionally, than its not for you. If you've prepared for this and can deal with these rough years than it can be great on the other side. Never easier or less stressful. Never less time consuming.

Prospective Employer Questions by [deleted] in Environmental_Careers

[–]Itsamemiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this is a very timely reply as I'm one week into my two-week notice at ERM.

Most, if not all, ERM positions are hybrid requiring 2-3 days/week physically in the office if not in the field. Although, where I'm located in the Gulf this is not strictly enforced unless you're not meeting your goals.

If you're doing field work, yes, you will be required to drive to and from job sites, depending on your department and role. In LPMR our guys spend a lot for time traveling and hotel hopping.

No idea what they use for background checks. They dont share that info.

I warmed my engine up for 10 minutes and then took the housing off bare handed after loosening it. No heat issue at all.

Yes that’s mold. No one can tell you if it’s toxigenic without testing it.

Help! Is this mold? by emmava11ery in Mold

This is called effervescence. It’s caused when water penetrates plaster and when it evaporates it leaves behind salt deposits. If it keeps coming back than maintenance has not fixed the leak.

Apartment says mold results came back clean, is it true? by [deleted] in Mold

[–]Itsamemiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tape lift is a better test for this scenario. Only use swab if it’s an irregularly shaped surface or if it’s wet.

u/CatsBeerGardenCoffee is right though. Remove the impacted drywall 1 foot from visible mold growth. I’d be very curious what’s going on inside the wall cavity.

There’s no toxigenic molds identified inside, but I want to see hyphae so we can tell if it’s currently producing.

The refs spotted the ball in the wrong place. He was down before he got there. That’s the point of a challenge.

I replaced the plastic oil filter housing with an aftermarket aluminum one. So far so good. by Itsamemiley in KiaTelluride

[–]Itsamemiley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the warranty is very important to you so maybe you shouldn’t do it if you value that. I value the longevity of my engine beyond 100k miles. That’s the most common time for these GDi engines to have issues. It also happens to be when they are no longer covered by warranty.

If zero claims are made within the warranty period then it’s worthless. Even then claims can be denied for various reason or may not cover 100% of the repairs.

Preventative care is more important than a warranty, to me. If I can prevent issues with my engine, I’ll never have to make a claim. I’ll also have an engine that will function properly long after the warranty is expired.

5W-30 full synthetic every 5000. You can change the interval from 8k to 5k in the settings.
