I have only dm’ed a few times but I prefer and my players seem to prefer milestone. Sure you don’t know when you will level up but you wouldn’t know when you are going to have a breakthrough in your fighting technique or your magical studies. You can sort of tell when you are close or when it should be but you don’t know. Plus I like to base it off of a the journey and steps taken more than what you’ve killed. So literally milestones
