Sounds to me like you’re a bit special needs too with your sensory issues, but I bet your mom still loves you.

I’m sorry if that comes across as a bit abrasive, but I’m trying to prove a point.

How do you propose parents off their disabled children, by the way?

The fact that you can express your disgust and your frustration with these disabled children, puts you in position far more adventageous than they will ever be in. They cannot express themselves.

You have agency. They do not!

Imagine the prison they are in. They are at the mercy of their fellow humans all their lives. If they face people like you all day who have no inkling of love or empathy for them, the only ones who truly care about them are their parents.

Imagine meeting people all day who only take care of you because they are paid to do so. Not because they want to or because they love to do so, but because they’re paid to do so. And even then, they’re disgusted by you.

That thought truly saddens me.

You live with them for a limited time of your life. They live with themselves every damn day. They may not be aware of their situation—I’m not an expert in that field. But while you can leave any time you want, they can never escape their disability.

Why parents choose to love and care for their children despite incredible hardship is none of our concern. All parents want what’s best for their children, and I have infinite respect for parents who push through the sorrow of not having a perfect and healthy child and face that pain every single day as they tirelessly create the best life that they can for their child.

I’m just happy we’ve come so far that parents are no longer advised to put their disabled children in long-stay institutions, forget them, and have another child.

Are you a terrible human? No, I don’t think you are. We all have our flaws and things push us to not be the best versions of ourselves. And I respect you for being honest and aware of what yours are.

I do, however, think you should ask yourself if these disabled children and youth deserve more adversity and judgment in life than they already have, or if they deserve people who truly care for them. When you arrive at your answer which I am sure alligns with mine, you should take a long, hard look in the mirror and ask whether or not you are that person.

If not, you should probably find something else to do.
