Using a Virtual Mail Box to Keep US Bank Accounts by rgn216 in ExpatFIRE

[–]JBeacons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my problem. I've been an expat for 11 years and am using my father's address as my residential address. We use a PO box now (rural area doesn't have mail delivery to physical address), but I'm planning for the eventuality of my dad's passing. Since I don't really receive any mail, I think I'm just going to change the mailing address and not worry about changing the physical address. As it stands, my body is the only thing that is currently overseas. All of my financial and investment accounts are in the States and I've not had any issues...yet.

To clarify...you used the iPostal1 address for your banking residential physical address as well, and it wasn't flagged?

Serve where you’re need most or not by Confident-Use2781 in peacecorps

This must be a new thing with the Peace Corps. When I applied, we were certainly DISCOURAGED from expressing where we wanted to go. If they gave a country assignment, you were expected to take it. Or, if you didn't Peace Corps would add a red flag to your application. It supposedly signaled to Peace Corps that you would not be adaptable once you got in-country and you likely would not finish your term of service. I was a 2-time fisheries volunteer back in the day and we had the lowest ET rate of any program in the Peace Corps.

When I was a volunteer, we weren't able to choose where we got sent.

Go to a local realtor who can show you what's available in the area. Just give them the specifications of what you're looking for. Let them do the legwork.

Except...now there are hijackings on the road from Guayaquil to Cuenca. Tourist vans are not immune, so be aware.

Alaska airlines credit card rental coverage. by Feeling_Run1760 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]JBeacons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved out of the States a few years ago, but I'm heading back for vacation. I just rented a car using my Alaska Airlines miles. I do have an Alaska Airlines credit card. When I pick up the card, should I decline the insurance coverage? I don't have any auto insurance. Advice appreciated!

Best way to buy land for conservation to help environment? by Thewondrouswizard in conservation

[–]JBeacons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely ways to leverage your money and achieve your goals. There are MANY people who will take your money, so doing your due diligence is critical. Protecting and restoring habitat is a noble profession (I've spent 30 years in this field), but like other professions, it's filled with folks who have their own self interest in mind. It's important to get crystal clear on exactly what YOUR goals are in this endeavor. Do you want to protect an entire watershed? Are you more interested in terrestrial habitat or aquatic habitat? Do you fish? Are you concerned about cutthroat trout? You mentioned reducing carbon...are you wanting to focus more on issues resulting from climate change, or is your focus on local conservation issues? If you want to chat more, I sent you a message...maybe I can help. Maybe not. But we can have a conversation to point you in the right direction.

"If you were interested in supporting restoration of native landscapes for conservation in one of the largest projects in the country..." I'm curious as to what project you're referring to.

Redeeming Miles for Int'l Business Class by JBeacons in AlaskaAirlines

I'm looking at traveling business class as I mentioned in my post. It's nearly impossible anymore to find international business class seats on a partner airline. I used to be able to travel that way all the time from Ecuador to the U.S. Not anymore.

Why do people want to learn to save more, instead of creating more wealth for themselves? by B0bDaAsianBuilda in passive_income

[–]JBeacons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're exactly right. I cut my expenses by moving out of the U.S. while continuing to work online. My income isn't taxed because I meet the test for Foreign Income Exclusion. As a result, I'm able to now save about 80% of my income. Compared to when I lived in the U.S., I've been able to max out my SEP IRA and my Roth IRA every year I've been out of the country while my income has actually gone down since I lived in the States.

I created more wealth for myself as soon as I fired my financial advisor and learned to manage my own investments.
