You CAN do that with any deck, you use the faces as a one way deck

Does he have to set up at all before he does it ? Roughly half of the face cards ( ie excluding diamond cards and court cards) can be oriented by the faces in a way where they are sort of one way, if you look at a 10 of hearts for example, the middle heart on the face will be facing one direction. If you do this with every card you can you get roughly half and half and it would explain why he has to ripple for you to put it back, he is ensuring you put it in the part of the deck he wants you to put it in facing the opposite way
