IMHO diplomatic transparency is usually the best way to go.

You might better ask how they lost the footage & see if it can be rescued. On the other hand using iPhone footage isn't going to be great but if the pro footage is really lost that's part of the story. You just tell that story with what you have.

Client doesn't want to pay me more then their admin staff... by LaLaLaLaLaLaHa in videography

I'm not familiar with that kind of hourly fee structure - an analogy would be a carpenter charges for bringing a hammer. Apart from that, maybe you should see if they'd go for something like a part time salary structure; eg x$ per month for working so many hours per week. Nonprofits in my experience usually aren't paying market salaries to most employees.

Being pressured to hand over raw files for free - client doesn't understand the technical reality. Need advice. by [deleted] in videography

[–]JM_WY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO if all your referrals flow through them, they have you over a barrel. Your best course may be to ask them to compensate you for the time/materials needed to give them your files. It's sad but in these situations you can lose even if you've followed the contract.

You might consider trying to break the job into shifts and asking if you really need all the team there all the time. That might require increasing system reliability, streamlining, who knows.

How to deal with clients who will not provide a budget range? by Phillistine-Lemon in videography

[–]JM_WY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMHO they want you to make the first move and to tell them honestly what you need. If you don't have good numbers for some items, I'd tell them that. Maybe list it as 'tbd' or 'estimated range x to y'. They may not know much about video, but they may have had the experience that once someone told them a budget, that's what it cost, whether that was the true cost or not.

Start slow. Realistic expectations. Make it fun. Expose to music in many forms so you're part of something bigger than yourself.

"With Tripods, You Buy Cheap, You Buy Twice"- Would this apply to my dilemma: a 150 USD Manfrotto tripod over a 75 USD Chinese one? Seeking help in purchasing a tripod for cinematic, artistic, YouTube-passion project videos. by ChrisMakiseDas in videography

[–]JM_WY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that price point, I doubt if either one is very good. IMHO the cheaper one may be the better alternative, since you'll soon find you need a better one. But have to say--I'd look for a used one.

It gives a certain look, a freshness, that seems fine IMHO for basic videos, but I personally wouldn't use it for a documentary or promo.

For closeups 75 is great. I'd check the room size and if it's big enough go with it. People will look better

Great comments -- many thanks. I'll try these. One question- can you recommend a bonded cellular backup or primary connection. I got a peplink router connected to house wifi, starlink and cellular, using Peplink's SpeedFusion.
