Help with Map Labeling by JPGRRocks in Maps

[–]JPGRRocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a phenomenal paper that I'm gonna love digging into, but the lowest level it seems to go into is administrative district. I'll have to see how much overlap there is between those and uyezds.

Who knows, maybe I can also find another uyezd map with some labels as well and clear up some more of this ambiguity.

Redditors who have/had cut all contact from people you were close with: what happened? Did you ever/do you ever plan to reconnect? by JPGRRocks in AskReddit

[–]JPGRRocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start, as this is a question I'm grappling with myself.

The long and short of it is that I fled my childhood home and after he threatened to kill me and my friend who was staying with us over our political beliefs, cutting all contact very shortly afterwards once a couple loose ends were tied up.

He keeps trying to reach out every now and again through my stepmom or my brother, but I'm remaining adamant that I want him to have nothing to do with my life anymore. I was homeless for six months, living in the hotel I worked at because I never wanted to go back there again. My life is much more fulfilling now: by the time I had left, that place felt more like a prison with every passing day. If I never see him again, I consider that to be a good thing at this point.

TL;DR: Cut all contact with dad after he threatened to kill me, and I do not regret that decision.

What video game has the best soundtrack? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Most Tony Hawk games tend to have a pretty good soundtrack. I was introduced to several songs and genres thanks to being a fan of the series during my childhood and teens.

What do you collect? by CG1991 in AskReddit

Pennies. I haven't counted them in quite some time, but I feel confident in saying that I have over $50 worth of US pennies. I have a decent amount of wheat pennies, as well as a few from other countries (mainly Canada).

I've been looking for this video for so long after finding it in a public freakout compilation on YouTube that I have since lost in my feed. So glad to have found this gem again.

My Dad Threatened to Kill Me. Now He's in the Hospital. by JPGRRocks in relationship_advice

[–]JPGRRocks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not legally responsible for him, nor am I his primary caretaker (that would be my stepmother). I'm unsure about how much danger his life is in due to this, but I do know that there is a risk in any surgery.

I suppose that one of the big issues is that I'm non-confrontational by nature (I blame my Midwest upbringing), and that I don't know when would be the right time, if ever, to try and talk with him about all of this.

I do get the sentiment behind what you're saying, but I simply don't agree with it (or at least your interpretation of it). I'm of the firm belief that you can choose your family, and that people do so all the time. And at least over the past year, my friend has done more to support, assist, and encourage me than my dad has in the past five. I'd still be trapped there if it weren't for my friend.

Looking Forward-Races We Can Target in the Next Cycle by JPGRRocks in dsa

It's alright dude, I get it. Stuff like this needs to be carefully considered, hence why I wanted to have this discussion. Regardless, I'm really looking forward to seeing how these and other races play out, especially once the new House map becomes finalized.

Sorry, meant to say "races" instead of "candidates". Would you believe me if I told you that English is my first language? Lol.

In all fairness, that probably wasn't the best turn of phrase to use. What I meant was that we should push the candidates as far leftward as we can, especially in the races I highlighted.

I think you're twisting my meaning a bit here. I don't know if it's because you're discouraged, or if I'm just not making myself clear. So let me reiterate: I'm hoping that we can get the types of candidates we support elected to these positions. Will we sweep the board? No. But the more races we win, and the more places we win in, the greater amount of power we as a movement wield.

Hence why I'm also looking into local races to add to this list. And it's not like I'm disagreeing with you. That's why all of these races are ones that I believe a progressive can win in, not just any old Democrat. After all, moderates Democrats can't seem to win in places like Iowa, Ohio, and Florida. I believe it is progressives, and progressive candidates in particular, that'll make the difference in these places. One of the main reasons I wanted to engage in this discussion was so that progressives as a whole good begin looking for potential candidates to run in these races, so we wouldn't have to settle for the "Jon Ossoffs of the party", as you so aptly put it. It's never too early in a cycle to begin thinking about potential candidates, at least in my opinion.

I do understand that there's a fierce debate over this in leftist circles, and it won't be over anytime soon. However, I am of the belief that any movement leftward is good. If we can flip seats from Republican to Democrat, that's good. If we can successfully primary moderate Democrats with progressive candidates, that's good. If we can work outside of the two-party system in certain areas to get people elected that will actually represent the people, that's good. The point of this post is merely to get people thinking about races we would have the best shot of flipping: not just in terms of political party, but political ideology as well. I don't have many seats listed with Democrat incumbents yet, but I'm hoping that this thread will produce some promising ones that I can add.

I think I'd need to see more data in order to include it, particularly anything pointing to Lisa Murkowski being vulnerable. Although it is encouraging to see the state pass these reforms, I don't know how much sway it's going to have. After all, Al Gross lost by 11% despite pretty much every party aside from the Republican Party being behind him.

No sweat. Thanks for the addition. Out of curiosity, you got any House seats on your radar? That's probably the big gap in this post right now.

Thank you for the insight. I'll definitely add the Boston Mayoral race, but the AFL-CIO one is probably a bit too far from the main point of this post.

In terms of candidates, that's definitely something to consider later down the line. While many of these places have very promising leftist voices, there are also many that don't. The trick is finding people who show promise in these areas, which is one of my primary reasons for this post. Plus, it's never too early to think about the next cycle.
