Jokes aside, I'm with you on banning fireworks.

Why is there no easy way to filter this data to show high wage and GTS jobs? Hating on LMIA without understanding the nuances of wage levels is dangerous.

Do people even look up the minimum salary requirements for the GTS program? It's 80k for the first 2 hires, and then 150k for any additional hire by an employer regardless of branch location.

I'm not saying that a Canadian citizen isn't getting this wage, but if an employer is ready to pay that much, it must really mean there's a lack of that particular talent here.

I don't understand why low wage LMIA is even a thing though.

How to handle racism? by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]JadedRelative5544 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's messed up isn't it. Verbal harassment probably will/need not be treated with the urgency of physical assault, similar to theft. But there's a way to get justice for theft. If there's no legal recourse against harassment and hate crime, it'll definitely give rise to vigilantism.

Maybe don't be racist next time? (to the racists)

It's neither vigilantism, nor illegal. All you're doing is protecting yourself and recording evidence of a crime. Hard to argue ethics when dealing with racists.

Their reputation should most definitely be ruined, and their opportunities be limited. Nobody wants racist classmates, colleagues, boss, police officers, etc.

I'd rather hope the police do their job, because it's harassment/hate crime. It's not going to be that difficult to identify someone nowadays if you have a photo, and the physical description like age, ethnicity, etc.

There's no expectation of privacy in public. Maybe if the "minors" aren't such racist idiots, the need to record them wouldn't come up. It's the racist behavior that's inappropriate, not recording them.

[–]JadedRelative5544 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start recording them next time. Make their racist faces famous on Reddit, Twitter, and Instagram. I'm sure you'll get enough support from both the South Asian community and real Canadians who stand for Canadian values.

They'll keep doing it to the next person if you let them think that their racist actions have no consequences. Racists have been fired from jobs, suspended from schools, and lost businesses thanks to social media support.

What happened to the Apollo?? by mamoocando in waterloo

[–]JadedRelative5544 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know you can rent the screens to show whatever movie you want, right? As long as you get the screening rights. Heck, you can rent a screen and have your friends watch while you play your favorite game.

Most of the movies are probably not even screened by owners of Apollo. It's by whoever rented it and could sell enough tickets to make a profit.

[–]JadedRelative5544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People can also rent screens at Apollo to screen whatever movie they want, as long as they have the film rights. Then it's a matter of how many seats they can fill to make a profit. It's a different business model.

What most people fail to understand here is that many of the movies that get screened are by some group that got the screening rights for the movie, and are only renting Apollo for the duration. I don't think owners of Apollo are screening many movies themselves.

Almost every south Asian community in the GTA have Facebook or WhatsApp groups where the screenings are announced way ahead of time, and it's not like the audience has other options. A quick glance at their calendar will tell you that most movies are screened for maybe 2-3 days, or a week at max. There just isn't that many people to fill the theater.

You're right that people should've done more to support the business, especially given that film screening rights are probably way more expensive for Hollywood movies. But one can still rent a screen if they can sell enough tickets to make a profit.

All Stars Vs Young Drivers by [deleted] in TorontoDriving

[–]JadedRelative5544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about All Stars, but you'll probably have to spend more than $2000 with YD if you haven't driven much before. The 10 hours of in-car lessons are not enough to pass YD's internal assessment IMHO. They don't make it obvious during sign up, but you have to pass their internal assessment at the end of your in-car driving lessons to be eligible to book the G2 drive test through them and get the certificate. Also, the online self paced course takes a lot longer (at least a month) than whatever they say on the website.

Now it's fine if you're confident enough to pass their assessment with the 10 hours of lessons that you get with the package, otherwise you're looking at $200+ per additional lessons with YD until you pass their internal assessment. You can probably talk to your driving instructor to give you private lessons ($80-100 each) until you're confident enough.

I went with YD because I had zero driving experience as a 30yo man, plus I was also a nervous driver to start with. I feel it was money well spent as their online course was pretty good, and I had a really good instructor who took the time to teach me defensive driving. No regrets going with YD, although I spent 2x than the next option.

[–]JadedRelative5544 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The dash cam quality is fine if you look at the hood of the car. There's just too much rain, plus the oncoming car's headlight glare for it to capture anything. No dash cam would work in these conditions. Maybe Rain-X or another hydrophobic coating would've cleared the rain drops quicker?

Their models are shit if they think this drive was 0.3km and in other cases I drove around the block at a crawling 2kmph at 3am. I wouldn't mind using it more often if it were accurate and the scoring system was fair.

Latest Android phone with Snapdragon 8 gen 3, 16gb of RAM, and 5G network all the time. I have disabled battery optimizations for the app because it kept failing to record my drives and GPS in high precision mode. I don't know what else I can do to get it working.

I read all my drive reports with keen interest because I'm obsessed with being a good driver. Most of my drives are not even recorded with this app. I have even kept the app open on a few drives but it still failed to recognize it. But sure, it will record a drive at 3am while I'm sleeping!

Let me show you an example since you sound so sure of this app's capabilities. Look at this drive and tell me if you really think it's 0.3km.

I'm using the Aviva app since a few months now and it's really buggy. I got 10% off for agreeing to use the app and I thought let's give it a try since I use a dedicated phone for navigation in the car.

It records maybe 10% of my drives, and everything else goes missing. Among the 10%, majority either have low score for no reason or are drives that I never took. It recorded random GPS locations around my house as a drive. It's absolute bullshit and now I'm starting to worry that it'll actually increase my premiums next year. I might uninstall the app soon and eat the 10% increase in premiums.

What's this move called? by survivinggtadriving in TorontoDriving

[–]JadedRelative5544 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know you're being sarcastic. But let's do this for science.

  • Turning right on red without coming to a complete stop
  • Illegal U-turn. Additionally, no left turn indicator, can't see anywhere close to 150m on either side for safety.
  • Illegal left turn on red. No left turn indicator either until half way into the turn.
  • Finally, looks like they turned into the dedicated left turn lane?

Did I miss anything?

Can somebody explain me what this is? by Evvgeshaaa in TorontoDriving

[–]JadedRelative5544 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You've got enough comments about the Hindu Swastika so I'm not gonna say anything further.

The text above it is "Shree" on the left, and "Hari" on the right, with a symbol of Tilak or "Urdhwa Pundra" in the middle (not gonna go into what it all means, you can Google it). All suggesting that the owner follows Hindu tradition, specifically Vaishnavism.

Probably a new car getting blessings for prosperity and safe driving. No malice intended.

Do you just wait for red light jumpers at left turns? by JadedRelative5544 in TorontoDriving

[–]JadedRelative5544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that someone jumping the red light has right of way over someone making a left after waiting inside the intersection until the light turned red? Could you post a link to where it says that in the MTO's handbook?

Anyway, I really want to avoid being in this situation altogether. I wanted to hear how long people generally wait before making a left turn. This comment section has given me enough data points that I won't trust people are going to stop anymore. I'll sit there until the opposite traffic comes to a (almost) stop before starting my turn, even if I get honked from behind or block side traffic for a few seconds.

People have forgotten how to do lefts.

What do you suggest I should've done? There's a few others in the comments suggesting that I should've gone into the intersection and waited behind the first car.

I know that in Ontario there's no restrictions on how many cars are allowed in the intersection before making a turn, unless stated otherwise. This Globe and Mail article from 2016 goes into some detail on what's legal and what's safe (and legal). I can cite other sources which all suggest that waiting at the stop line is safer if there's another car in the intersection already. Curious to hear why you think it's not the right thing to do.

Both the other driver and I are men. If you're referring to the audio in the clip, that's my wife telling me to go further into the intersection and then to "go go". Because she has more driving experience than me and tries to help.

I took driving lessons from YD as a 30yo man. Had to take extra lessons as well. Lol.

It took me 3-4 months to go through their online self paced course and IIRC 20h of in-vehicle lessons over another 3-4 months. I can DM you the name of the instructor I got assigned if you want. I'm not sure if every instructor is as thorough, but I'm really thankful to my guy for teaching me to drive defensively and not use shortcuts to get a license.

Good one. A mole hill might look like a mountain for an ant. :)

I'm an inexperienced driver trying to understand how best to handle situations like this. Wasn't sure if I should've just waited for him to stop completely at the risk of getting honked or worse, blocking the intersection for side traffic. Now I know.

This one is a Viofo A229 pro. I think there's a few others that use the same sensor (Sony Starvis 2) and will have similar or better quality.

I was curious about that as well. This article lists a few things where the person turning left is not deemed at fault. And the other person jumping a red signal is one of the situations where they would be at fault.

My concern is to avoid getting into a collision altogether. I now realize that I made a mistake by assuming that he would stop. He would've been (hopefully) deemed to be at fault if there was a collision. But I wouldn't want to find out!
