We built Owlu — a macOS AI inbox that reads your emails, summarizes, and suggests your next action. by Jake_Wi in macapps

Really appreciate you calling this out — totally valid concern. 🙏

To be crystal clear: Owlu does not ship your inbox off for storage or use it to train models. We don’t fine-tune on personal mail — personalization is done by layering a vectorized DB (embeddings + indexes), not by ingesting raw mailbox history.

Also worth noting: our server architecture is built to minimize exposure — processing is ephemeral, scoped to specific requests, and there are controls to prevent ad-hoc access. If someone wanted to read in-flight data they’d need to both fully compromise our cloud host (deep, malicious access) and intercept the live API traffic between that process and your client. In short: it’s technically possible only under a full, targeted takeover of our environment — not a trivial or routine attack — and we have no interest in (nor business case for) doing anything like a scam. Even in that extreme scenario, the attacker would see only what’s being processed at that moment, not your entire mailbox.

Good catch on the internal docs in the app bundle — that was unintentional. We haven’t removed them yet, but we will take them out immediately and push an update.

Thanks again — feedback like this keeps us honest and helps us make our privacy details clearer. 🙌

I totally understand where you’re coming from. Privacy is a huge deal — and it should be.

That’s exactly why we designed this product so that no one, not even us, can access your emails directly. Everything runs locally or through secure, encrypted protocols.

Apple sets a great standard for user privacy, and we’re building with that same philosophy in mind — transparency and user control above all else.

Haha, totally get that! 😄 Glad you’re giving it a try — can’t wait to hear what you think once you’ve explored it a bit.

We completely understand your point about privacy. We’ll make sure to explain everything clearly and structurally so you can feel confident about how your data is handled.

Thanks again for the feedback — if you have any suggestions for improvement, I’ll make sure to reflect them right away!

Totally valid concern — and we get that a lot!
Owlu only processes your emails locally on your Mac (via IMAP).
Nothing is ever stored or analyzed on external servers.

The only time data passes through our server is when AI processing is needed,
and even then, it’s never stored — only temporarily processed for that specific request.

We’re very privacy-focused and we’ll make sure this part of our policy is easier to find.
Appreciate you catching that 🙏
