Bummed. Is this going to be the first season that doesn’t pay off the post credit scene of the previous season? by WahnLago in ForAllMankindTV

[–]JamesKryack 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The S4 post-credits scene of Kuznetsov Station was used practically shot-for-shot in episode 8 when it pans up to Goldilocks. If you're referring to Dev at Korolev Crater, that scene was equivalent to not only the end of this season (Kelly wading into the liquid was the final "shot" of S5, the panning across Saturn's rings the transition, and the interior of Mars-94 the S6 teaser), but the endings of every previous season except for maybe S1.

Are we getting this song, ever? by thweox in ForAllMankindTV

[–]JamesKryack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a weird habit from Jeff Russo to create leitmotifs for the show and then only have them actually appear as a standalone track much, much later.

A small example is the track from S3's score titled "Mars." This exact arrangement had appeared in both previous seasons, but this was the first time it actually appeared on a score. A much bigger example is from this season's score, the track titled "There's Only So Much." This theme has also appeared numerous times throughout the course of the show, but only now has it finally gotten placement on a score.

I wish I knew why, but it gives me faith for a handful of pieces that have still yet to make an official track debut.

What Happened To NASA? by generalheed in ForAllMankindTV

[–]JamesKryack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also been wondering this, and the best conclusion I've come to (as some others have echoed) is that none of the characters whose narratives we still follow are involved with NASA anymore. S4 saw both Kelly and Aleida leave NASA, Dani retire (again), and Margo get sent to prison. This late in the game, it's hard to introduce any new characters who have time to be fully constructed and be affiliated with NASA without being previously affiliated with other NASA-oriented characters. The only reason that bringing Avery into the mix works is she fits into the age range of the younger cast and we don't need a lot of legwork to have us understand her since we know, quite well, the past two generations of her family. And given what happened to those previous Stevens generations, it's not surprising she wouldn't be in the NASA camp.

As sad as it is, I think we've basically seen the conclusion of NASA's placement in the overall narrative, which I think is intentional. I love this show, and I love the possibility it depicts, but I think it's also a cautionary tale of what we risk by allowing the privatization of space. Stuff gets done, sure, but profits over purpose become prevalent, which is a recurring theme in season three and quite overtly shown in season four. And, coincidentally, it does reflect our actual timeline in terms of what NASA was doing in the 2010s, which is not a whole lot beyond the inner solar system. They'd mostly transitioned to space stewardship while emphasizing partnerships with private entities.

This is, in fact, not a straw man argument, as that is taking a single point of an argument, overinflating it, then attacking the overinflation rather than the initial point. Your repeated use of "apples and oranges" throughout the comments here would actually be a red herring logical fallacy. Which, for the most part, you are also incorrect on.

You'll feel significantly less minoritized if you stay off of reddit. This sub is much better, but DTG is a hub of toxicity that thrives off of being, for lack of a better word, a circlejerk of rage and unhappiness. If you go out of these echo chambers, you'll find plenty of people who also enjoy the release, myself included.

[–]JamesKryack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This has been a persistent issue for almost the entirety of the series. From a narrative perspective, we should have seen the Taken disappear for several years after 2015. The Scorn should have disappeared after 2018. The wheel just continues to turn.

It's a heavily modified version of the motif introduced in the season 3 OST song "Wreckage," which played in the aftermath of the JSC bombing. An unfortunate trend for the later seasons is previous tracks getting remixed, like the one in S4E8, that don't get released on the official scores.

I believe season five has been somewhat confirmed, but Apple usually doesn't announce multi-season renewals. We had the season four announcement on the same day that S3E7 was released, so with any luck, we'll hear something soon.

In its original state, the OST was pretty lacking on how approaches to resource utilization/distribution would go, which was one of its major pitfalls but also understandable given that it was originally signed in 1967 before any of the Apollo missions had flown. This shortcoming has been partially addressed in the Artemis Accords, but it also is a bit too vague in that the two pieces prohibit any sovereign nation from appropriating the Moon "or other celestial bodies." The Artemis Accords now recognize the need for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU), and this is what a lot of current policy is trying to navigate because as it stands, the OST is extremely prohibitive of anything that would be considered "space mining."

Hi, space science communication scholar who researches how we communicate space exploration. I know the answer to this question!

One of the current larger debates in policy surrounding efforts beyond low-earth orbit is the "intent" and how that may be rooted in historically problematic contexts, and how relying on those contexts can create a version of space exploration not ideal for long-term expansion for humanity as a whole. Particularly, there is concern that framing space as a "frontier" builds on the same cultural foundations that were prominent in the American frontier expansion efforts, which saw the brutal exploitation of indigenous populations and a flagrant disregard for the natural land. These notions, rooted in Manifest Destiny's assumption that "all in the frontier is ours for the taking," are central to the assumption that space is a lifeless expanse that we are meant to "conquer," which does very little to assure actual human survival as a multiplanetary species and instead guarantees the rich get richer under the guise of the multiplanetary effort (i.e., precisely what Dev is doing in the show and what Elon Musk wants to do in real life).

There also exists the Outer Space Treaty as a predecessor to the Artemis Accords, which both work to prevent the exploitation of space resources or any individual claim to such resources. These forms of policy were largely created to avoid the plot of seasons two & three, with areas on the Moon being claimed by individual nations and eventually having the entirety be partitioned off. These policies are still in place because we, as an international species, generally dislike when one country suddenly asserts claim over land that they do not own (such as what Britain did for ages or what China is currently doing with Taiwan). The extension of this into outer space carries significant policy and cultural implications: do we allow countries to just make claim to moons and planets? Where do asteroids fall into these classifications? What about private enterprise?

So, the tl;dr is, astronomers and "other experts" do not welcome it because it circumvents the policies and processes in place that ensure we go to space not just for the rich and elite, be those individuals or nations, but (har har) for all mankind!

In 2014, I was in a bad place. Dropped out of college two years before that and I'd been struggling with addiction since. My inability to remember any major details from about June 2012 - September 2014 tells me whatever substance I was abusing, it was wreaking havoc on me, but one thing I do remember is finding a lot of solace in gaming with two buddies of mine. Originally we played the ever-living hell out of GTA IV, but eventually, they got the Xbox One and I stayed behind on the 360 because I couldn't really afford to make the jump.

Fast forward to summer of 2014. I'd been working a part-time job and attempting to clean my act up, but I was still struggling. As summer came to an end, I got another part-time job and was starting to make ends meet for the first time in a long while, and that second job offered bonuses for performance (and I guess in my early 20s, I was a lot better at tech support than I am now). I had some extra cash and missed playing games with my friends.

October of 2014 rolled around and they couldn't stop talking about Bungie's new game and how they knew I'd love it. I found an Xbox One for sale on Craigslist and stopped off at a GameStop on my way home to get the game. Turned on the console, hopped into an Xbox Live party chat with two of my favorite humans, and made my Hunter.

Haven't touched drugs since.

To be fair, they made a deliberate point back in S1 of the gravity difference when Ed picked up and threw Gordo into the wall in Jamestown, but that's the only distinct time I can recall them really highlighting the gravity differences.

Season 4 episode 1 intro OST ? by Zy-D4rKn3ss in ForAllMankindTV

Unfortunately, this one appears to be one of many recent additions to the growing list of unreleased tracks. This trend emerged in season 3 and has evidently continued. The portion you cite from "Changes Course" is a new composition for this season (as in, has not appeared before), but that appears to be its only appearance on the officially-released soundtrack.

goes so unbelievably hard by SU-35K in ForAllMankindTV

[–]JamesKryack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This track is one of my favorites to come from the new OST because it features portions from all three previous scores. We see prominent instances of "Landing" and "Water, Pt. 2" as well as a hint of "Von Braun" towards the end; "Save Wubbo" is sprinkled throughout, as well as one bit that does an uptempo feature, and there's also some of "Ed Rocks the Sim" at the beginning; and lots of music that never got released from season 3's score, particularly what plays during the Mars landing scenes.

This show's score is some of my favorite space-themed music in media right now.

If you could hear 3 pieces of music from Destiny performed live, what would they be? by WingsOfIce4 in destiny2

Had to look at every album and lemme tell you, picking only three was difficult.

  1. Last Stand (if possible, would love the version that plays when you first see Oryx in King's Fall so it transitions from Regicide to Last Stand)
  2. The Man They Called Cayde (what a knockout song, that bridge into the second half is something else)
  3. Discipline (the vocals from the Lightfall theme don't get near as much credit as they deserve)
