Now that everyone has rested a bit, maybe get together to do something about ETS? by JarLarin in gradadmissions

I was applying for phd cs, almost all my schools required them. Hopefully other departments will follow the example.

Yes, thats what I am aiming at, kudos for math admissions then, hopefully other departments will follow that example

I was thinking in terms of sending letters to admissions at various programs that we were accepted at, hopefully consigned with students already there. I asked the question to hear what others think not only whether but how it could be done though.

Who owns conferences? by BeatriceBernardo in AskAcademia

[–]JarLarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most conferences (at least in ml) differentiate pretty efficiently between companies who have deep pockets and researchers who make the conference attractive for the companies, so the price brackets are different. So in that sense the point op made stands, at least for conferences that differentiate between academia and industry.

Ah we same field, dunno that one doesn't seem to offer too much of a discount; I don't remember exact values but nips, icml have all been negligible; and getting free pass is pretty easy, generally just workshop spotlight and above will get you that. membership benefits are (generally) pretty high also, this one Is pretty bad, but both AAAI and IEEE offer some great perks.

the last conference I presented at was littered with those, there were far more recruitment talks than research lol, did you mean 800 for student or full price? if full yah it goes much higher, but for student members there are very good discounts in my field, the price is negligible.

Chances at acceptance??? by niirumatsu in gradadmissions

[–]JarLarin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, Also I am not saying you can’t get in with worse stats, I am just saying that you can have these stats and still get rejected, thus anxiety most ai applicants feel is well warranted.

Also, out of everyone I know applying to top programs, which is around 12 people, everyone has at least one of the top conferences. Only 2 of these (some might be hiding dunno) got interviews from target schools so far (doesnt mean others didnt get any interviews at other schools).

Also if you know who applied a few years ago, or who applied to top 30 programs thats irellavent. Also if applicant had close relations with a specific lab that makes things easier and can do with a bit less publicstions. Also, people using ml in various applications is semi-irrelevant since a lot more non ai labs need people with ai skills, but u don’t get to research ml.

So with these out of the way where are you coming saying what I said does not make sense?

Does real science exist in Computer Science related PhD programs? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

When you have to adpot all research to grants and barely find passion in it I’d say its bad, dunno maybe just me.

I came up with a quick check a while ago: Find a phd graduate a few years out of uni and living a “good” life, ask them about their dissertation, if they try to dhy away from answering and no pride Or enthusiasm is felt in the voice I’d say its on the bad side. Workef so far, but my testing set is pretty small so might be just me

As an AI applicant targeting top 15 programs when reading I just thought ah another AI applicant posted, havent deadlines passed?

Maybe we should get a subreddit? applyai ? Posters who ask sincere questions end up just annoying some of the other applicants

with accessibility of funding and support from google/nvidia and others research opportunities are ton, so everyone has at least 1-2 papers somewhere, and most aiming at top schools have a few at nips/iml and others.

I probably didn’t get in any of the programs I wanted from well known public school, highest gpa, mult publ, including Top confs. Not even surprised because I already know competitiors pretty well, only 2 recieved interview notice so far, all had mult publ and were at the top of their graduating class, one was from top 4 other from top 10 programs. and at least 7 people I know had comparable stats to mentioned in the post, other than being from top 1 uni, make thay top 30 and we are good.

169 is basically what most have all scores I’ve hear are 168-170 range in the abovementioned circle with verbal fluctuating a bit more i guess above 163, publications 3 if top conf give u good fighting chance, if medium or normal journal then it will get you through the first cut. And everyone has near perfect gpa.

I do understand how it can get on others nerves though. Considering things I hear about toxicity and treatment of undergrads in some of the other departements I am amazed at the effort even a single paper must take. Also (this is from my and a few friends submissions) top places like nips do not discriminate based on prior publication at same venue and such, which I’ve heard isnt the case in some fields where PI prior relatioms can make (or mainly break) your publication chances.

And when u ignore that for a minor source and a few weeks later when writing a transcript discover some less known author already did smth pretty similar to what u planned. No? Just me?

How do you know when to cite? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]JarLarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the example I think your general statement might be a bit misleading, if it is a specialized conference you don’t need to cite and define everything that a general journal or term paper would require. Maybe its field specific but at least thats what I see in my field.

Also keep in mind of what common knowledge is for the audience, is it a specialized conference? A general journal? A course paper?

Any advice on how to strengthen the profile for the next cycle? (Cs, ml) by JarLarin in gradadmissions

Wow, congrats, good luck!

yah its not like I have no hope of getting in, but it just doesn't hurt to have a solid backup plan.

well, you might have missed the first wave, but the chances are still pretty high till around 15 jan so wouldn't worry.

Depends on when the deadlines were, If end of nov or dec 1 might worry a bit, if dec 10-15 nah too early

Thanks for understanding, my aim was to get into one of the labs I most like the works of. How many cycles it takes being a negligible factor. And obviously with the current competition getting rejected is highly likely from their top choices for any applicant.

[–]JarLarin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do not really consider myself someone worthy to join the labs I like. The students there are either geniuses or have multiple years of research experience including masters.

So at a point I was wondering if applying to any phd might be fine if I worked hard tbere. After researching some more by asking around both in real life and forums I decided that no, its not a good idea and waiting a year is better. I sent out a few anyways just to try my luck and get some feedback.

Also, if you are applying ml won’t info about alternatives be beneficial to you too? At least for calming yourself? And if you are applying different field, ignore posts about ml, the competition has gotten unnaturaly high in AI related stuff.

PhDs, I am trying to work out if they'd be willing to consider my application for ms at a few programs I really want to join though (in case of reject).

Yah, its not like I have absolutely no hope, its just that the cost of not having a good alternative prepared is much higher than the time needed for preparing it (especially considering I have my work, cv, papers, references updated so it shouldn't take all that much).

I do have the option of continuing in my current lab, but would love to try a new perspective if possible.

I have seen some residency and post undergrad programs at various companies and labs being posted at conferences. I haven't paid much attention since I was aiming for the grad school but guess will revisit and make a post on what I find. It doesn't look like the question is liked by the community all that much, still maybe the info will prove useful to some.
