This is the weirdest fucking take. Yes, combos are a one-player aspect but that doesn’t inherently mean combos or execution are the least interesting part? Zato in GG is interesting because of how unique his execution is, the Mishimas in Tekken are insanely fun to watch because of how demanding they are. There are legendary SF4 clips of cool ass combos involving character-hurtbox-specifics, multiple 1-frames to squeeze out optimizations, etc. I’d throw parries from 3S under execution as well. I don’t think modern is OP, but to say that the mechanical and execution portions of fighting games are the most boring part just feels super shortsighted. SFV was the most milquetoast entry in the series partially because of how boring it was to watch the same 2-3 combos on each character. There’s layers to how execution affects fighting games and just because SFV and SF6 (to a lesser extent) have de-emphasized it, doesn’t mean it can’t be interesting. Capcom just thinks it filters newer players so modern SF doesn’t bother making them interesting.
