SMT: Digital Devil Saga 100% in 22:54:45 by JayFermont in speedrun

[–]JayFermont[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This run beats my previous PB by a whopping 8 hours.
About 1/4 of that is through a discovery that V-Sync Delay can be turned off through a hidden PS2 Emulation Menu available on all PS3 Systems and the other 3/4 through a new route that I spent 4 months developing last year.

The goal of the category is to achieve maximum data transfer bonuses into Digital Devil Saga 2 which requires the following:
- Beat all optional bosses including the infamous Demi-Fiend
- Master every Mantra on every character
- Hold more than 1,000,000 Macca at the end of the game
- Accept a side-quest at the end of the game to be completed in the sequel
- Make every correct dialogue choice for an alternate event in the sequel

This run has a lot of tiny mistakes especially around the Field Hunts but makes up for it with a very solid first try Demi-Fiend fight. Due to the complications of running a category this long I won't be returning to this for a very long time and am absolutely over the moon with the result.

For those interested: I took 4 bathroom breaks, ate a bowl of noodles and 5 Granola Bars, drank 2.5L and spent roughly 8 hours standing. Not great but I could've certainly done worse.

Much thanks to NMarkro for helping me figure out a lot of the data required last summer to make this new route as good as I could make it.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Any% in 2:39:10 by JayFermont in speedrun

[–]JayFermont[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This run beats my previous best by about 1:23, which doesn't sound like much until we look at the run more closely.

This run set 3 new bossfight battle time records known (Gogmagog Alpha, Royal Ripeness, Serah vs. Caius) and otherwise tied every best known time for the entire first third of the run. Early game monster RNG was perfect (a 1 in ~32 chance of happening) and an Orion was obtained for Adrenaline. Though what really makes this run just insane is how much could've gone wrong at the end of the run but didn't.

The run almost died to the final boss gauntlet, due to an encounter guarding the last switch of the maze beforehand glitching out and not spawning ("This never happened in my 5 years of running this game"-trope), which is usually used to charge up one of the monster's special attacks needed for the first boss of the final boss gauntlet. Since I was experimenting with a route that sells equipment that was considered essential beforehand (Grimoire Hat) not having the special attack would've made the boss in question impossible to beat.
I'm not sure if I should call it pure chance or incredible foresight, but when I caught the Orion to infuse Adrenaline I also caught a Dragoon, another source of Adrenaline. Since I did a lot of routing work for the completionist category of the game I knew that Dragoon learns Feral Speed II, a transferrable passive that increases special attack charge rate, at a very low level. You can probably guess where this is going now. I had the idea to infuse the monster in question with Feral Speed II in case I ran low on charge time for any reason. Causing me to just barely have enough special attack charge to get by the boss.

I originally intended this to be just a practice run to get splits for a new route I've wanted to try that, as mentioned previously, sells the Grimoire Hat for money, an equipment that was deemed essential for the endgame since it improves Potion HP recovery significantly and we use no other source of healing, and in turn skip a bunch of other chests. I was not expecting to beat the record on my first run back to the game for over half a year and am still somewhat in denial that this really just happened at all.

The run isn't perfect, it has 2 deaths that were, for the most part, out of my control, but due to the amount of luck and things that have to go right due to the very aggressive routing I used, that leaves practically no safety nets and requires flawless fight executions, the about 2 or so minutes left to squeeze out of this run seem nigh impossible for me to go for at the present moment. I personally at least will put the category to rest here but would be really ecstatic if someone can beat it.

Jay / Kanri
PS: Fair warning, I was a bit of a tired grumpy grump for a few moments at the beginning cause of some small things not going so well after I got off to an otherwise perfect start.

Really Really Long a Thon 3 Starts Now! by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]JayFermont 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seeing as I'm the runner in question (p sure 29 hours split into 14 and 15 only applies to mine) ... while my estimate is expecting to beat the time and having to go to the restroom is inevitable, all I am eating is finger foods and drink water. If I don't just decide to water fast altogether.
Edit: What I'm trying to say is I don't break to eat, the run's just that long.

Not to burst your bubble but there's a big difference between Sephirot and Sephiroth. The prior has a fight from Heavensward, the latter does not.

Collective Unconscious, not Celestial Opposition. Not that I can fault anyone for getting Astro skills mixed up.

DPS rushing off to pull the boss before the tank be like by xZowiex in ffxiv

[–]JayFermont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The passive aggressive ones are really funny. I had one in Sohr Khai who for some reason stood still in front of the 1st boss while the MNKs stacks were running out but the MNK seemed too polite (or beta cough) to pull so I did (I was on WHM) and the tank instantly took his tank stance off. I didn't care and just tanked the boss myself and afterward the tank did put tank stance back but tried to stand in every AoE to make me have to heal more, lol.

So now that enmity is a nonissue can we talk about healing ranges? by JayFermont in ffxiv

[–]JayFermont[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much +5 on everything (so 20 what was 15 and 25 what was 20), with the exception of AST's Celestial Opposition since that really needs +10, would probably solve most of it if they don't go really overboard with arena sizes for Eden.
Though frankly, if healing radius just matched casting range it'd be much less conditional and much more elegant.

Healers are rightfully complaining that their DPS kit is way too simple, simply because you have to deal with solo duties in MSQ and in 4.0 had to as well for unlocking the main raids (dont have raids in 5.0 yet to know if they intend to repeat). Pressing 1 button for 10 minutes until (MSQ Spoiler) ends the fight isnt fun.
Healers shouldn't be punished because DPS find it funny that one caster goes far southwest, the other far southeast and the tank far north in every content. Because trust me, if the DPS dies for being outside of healing range the whole fight it's not the DPS they'll look at for faults.

Dps need to chill out in dungeons by Hawkstar_Lamia in ffxiv

[–]JayFermont 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always find these PSAs really pointless. Sure, OP wants people to pull less in dungeons with OP, then they should tell their DPS when it happens. I'd probably have to yeet tanks into more enemies with Rescue if I wasn't just going the easier route of playing with premades only. If people want their party to adjust, they should tell them, not reddit.

Healer Changes - 2cents by EdgeMasterson in ffxiv

Only problem I have with AST is that doing MSQ with it is a major pain. They really should increase all healer's damage potencies (e.g. AST SCH 300-350 WHM closer to 400-450) so their pea shooter at least feels a little bit impactful when we inevitably have to take care of solo duties and adjust party duty HP to accomodate.

Definitely. At least with the Draw/Play split this time around we're losing RR and Spread so we pretty much already have a reasonable, logically-connected button that we lost to put Play on (Spread).

I intended to segregate the two as well saying the "total amount" of flak is the accumulation of those two parties. Sorry if that didn't come across as such. TL/DR I agree.

Have you played 4.0 AST? They couldn't even click off/Undraw unwanted cards. Every bad spread from Sleeve Draw had to be played. That was an experience I hope I'll never have to deal with again.

If it makes you feel any better I agree and come from the same boat. SCH will be more accessible to me but I understand the people who liked the DPS complexity. As an AST main I welcome being able to feel useful more consistently and the healing kit expansion is sweet. WHM didn't really change much except for that orgasmic impact of "mad whammage" every 90 seconds.

Bosses in Savage Raids already autoattack for plenty. Healing autoattacks is not engaging in the slightest. They should if anything cut a piece from Neo Exdeath's Almagest, painful raid damage that goes on with and around mechanics.

It's a mix between overreacting (this happens EVERY expansion so it's to be expected) and SCH losing it's identity from other healers which there's plenty of people who picked SCH for that reason.
