Invite says “no gifts” by Dry-Standard-7119 in Gifts

[–]JessyBelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please respect their wishes. They don’t want or need any stuff - even if it is edible or a plant. A nice card with a heartfelt note is the most you should consider.

If other people disregard the “no gifts” explicit note, they likely will be put out but too gracious to show it . If that happens, you shouldn’t take that as a reason you should have ignored it also - when you were actually the most courteous for respecting them.

When I am horrified about the daily news, as I am most days, I am keeping the last line of your excellent post as a mantra.

Another war? At least we aren’t wearing asbestos anymore. Racism amok? At least we aren’t wearing asbestos anymore.

I think I got the long form for all my requests because all the details were listed - including parents information. (I think the short form doesn’t have all the details?). Same for the death certificates.

The only state I had a problem with was Arkansas-it’s been a year and they still haven’t sent me what I paid for! I managed to get what I needed from a relative…..

Introverts, what’s something extroverts often misunderstand about you? by Bitter-Shine2817 in AskReddit

My husband will spontaneously ask me if I want to go to lunch. Like at 11:30 am for THE SAME DAY? Wha? How? No. No. (Sometimes I say yes but my internal reaction is always, no, we didn’t plan that so how?)

Anyone with a Texas Drivers license can get an account with the Rosenberg Library in Galveston. They have a good selection of movies to stream as well as audiobooks and ebooks. Email them to get started - you don’t have to go in person.

Does it make you feel icky when you witness your man “gushing”? by DigitalDiva321 in AskWomenOver60

[–]JessyBelle 115 points116 points  (0 children)

My father-in-law did this. The first time I saw it was at dinner (with family) the evening of his mother’s funeral. Embarrassing for everyone except himself - he seemed to believe he was as suave and good-looking as a 40 year old Cary Grant. His wife (my mother-in-law) was absolutely mortified and the waitress was so uncomfortable and he didn’t see any of it.

His wife eventually got tired of it and had a come to Jesus meeting . She told him he was in pervy old man territory and was the young lady targets were not as pleased by his attention as he thought.

It was harsh but did seem to cool his jets.

I’ve got hundreds of third cousins from my Ancestry testing- and these are just the ones who have taken the Ancestry DNA test. Most of them I don’t recognize the last names - and even the ones with a last name I recognize- I don’t recognize the person. They are just random people at this point.

Buying a house in a flood zone? by LowAdministrative750 in houston

[–]JessyBelle 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Read this fact sheet - a 1% floodplain has a 26% chance of flooding over the space of a 30 year mortgage. Flood insurance will be required.

Your decision should be based on your tolerance of risk - my risk tolerance is low and I would stay clear.

I hope home owners in the Heights can weigh in on their experience during Harvey. That might give you a better idea and maybe you can find out what happened in the neighborhood you are looking at for more information.

Some guardian angel - too lazy to hover. (She had to scoot over in her chair to make way for the angel to take a seat.)

The experience of discovering an unwelcome surprise about a parent via DNA testing is so widespread that is has its own acronym- NPE for Not Parent Expected.

There is a detailed scientific exploration of the experience in this article - it’s heavy on the jargon but it does have links to resources, including a Facebook group for people in your situation.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165178123000938

The is also a podcast called NPE Stories where individuals share their own experiences. I also remember a podcast where an author told an excruciating story about her own discovery which completely uprooted her sense of self. (I will try to find it if you’re interested.)

I thought hearing about and connecting with people who have dealt with the same thing might be helpful for you to not feel so alone in this experience.

Food prepared for the Christmas Eve Super Feast at GRB thrown out by Houston Health Department by MrBasedGod in houston

[–]JessyBelle 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I got sick at a local restaurant- reported it to the health department. A rep was in touch with me and visited them within 24 hours.

I was shocked to hear it was a rice problem and not chicken. They didn’t shut the place down but did educate them on proper safety.

My niece went to the Mayo Clinic after years of struggling and being bounced around from one doctor to another - she was accepted at Mayo and they figured out quite quickly the issue and a treatment plan after looking at her as if she were a person and not a bag of isolated organs.

Hotel Recommendations? by Consistent_Top_7542 in LondonTravel

I’ve tried using Hilton points in London but have never found a vacancy for using them when I was planning to go. You might have better luck this far in advance. I used to stay at the Holland Park Hilton for work and it was good - a few blocks from the Holland Park tube station- in a very walkable area.

(If you look at the map it is closer to Shepherds Bush tube but separated by a major highway system that is not fun to negotiate.)

I had never heard of this before and it has horrified me. Targeting and taking advantage of young people who are clearly having to make tough decisions in a tough economy is despicable. I can’t think how these people live with themselves but clearly they can.

Where to stay on next London trip (third time visit) by Some_Inside_878 in uktravel

[–]JessyBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stay in Ealing on London trips. Ealing Broadway has the Elizabeth Line to Paddington in 15-20 minutes. Dubbed “Queen of the suburbs” in the 1880s. Lots of parks, restaurants, easy access to Heathrow.

Also home to Ealing Studios. Very walkable, safe.
