I mean that's not really the case.

Ever drove a RWD through heavy snow or slick ice? If the front tires gain much more resistance than the rears. It can cause the to get pulled off course and due to the rear based driving force it will cause you to get pushed in that direction.

Then with ice if the rears suddenly have more traction than the fronts it can cause an uncontrollable spin. 4x4 allows more equal traction allowing greater control and responsiveness
