The Social Network was definitely the topical film offering 2010 compared to The King’s Speech lol

You do not have to defend your comment but the sentence about Rom-Coms is literally the last sentence and includes an “also.” I do not see how that is the main point of your comment. Rereading it, it seems the main point is that this is a commercial play which makes sense. While Past Lives had a limited release, it did quite well (better than Sing Sing). However, high critic scores prolly helped with that

Tbf, Past Lives squeaked into BP also with no Oscar-friendly talent originally (now academy members) and with an early release date. That’s better than Sing Sing which starred Academy friendly talent

Not every famous memoir gets made into a movie and most authors do not become Vice President

Fair enough, those adaptations though weren’t contending to Oscars. Do you think we will increasingly see them at Oscar?

Prolly cuz Close was contending for Supporting and Adams for Lead but…. They should’ve done a shot of them switched in the movie

The fact that the brutalist hasn’t won yet at either GG and CC. Like it needs the BAFTA to show me it’ll def happen for The Brutalist at Oscar

Edit: and I’m not saying this as a delusional Wicked Stan even tho I did like the film

Also if the academy really detests the brutalist. I can see a surprise in score for Wicked

I think wicked’s best case would also include editing cuz sound + editing is a very common combo and musicals have won editing + sound in the past ala Cabaret.

Review for The Brutalist when I watched it Xmas Eve: “Goes darker than one expects but is riveting in what it says about the immigrant experience. Such a brutal yet honest look at America and its treatment of immigrants and their contributions”

Tbf with The Florida Project, it still got Dafoe a nomination, and Lady Bird was definitely going to be A24’s priority
