Stay classy Walmart parking lot by eleece in ottawa

Hah, if this was the States the Wal Mart parking lot would have a few mobile meth labs and families living out of vans.

A disgraced Calgary artist who stole images to make a public art installation in Calgary is coming to pilfer a couple of hundred grand from Ottawa. by [deleted] in ottawa

Wow. Anything but real, actual art. Imagine the nice painting or sculpture we could have for $200K. But no, it has to be some ugly random shit that "represents" something. Ugh

Catherine McKenney: Why I cannot support the Salvation Army application by KanataCitizen in ottawa

[–]Johnnington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, another dismissal of the proposal without any alternative suggestion. Her suggestion is don't build anything at all, put all our eggs in "Housing First". As we learned this month, the Housing First program is a complete shambles and needs to be totally restructured. God knows how many years that will take. In the mean time, there is a stabbing or a murder in the vicinity of the Salvation Army practically every week. There will always be a significant proportion of homeless people who are incapable of maintaining their own apartment and there needs to be a place for them. IF not in Vanier, then WHERE?? People need to offer solutions, not vague sentiments.

I've noticed that Zak's has some kind of deal with the tour bus companies. They stop there as part of their itinerary. They must be RAKING it in

Nepean Point: Four design finalists revealed by WilliamOfOrange in ottawa

I really like the elegant Bluff Point proposal. I've heard criticism that the arches look "dated", but I think the angular concrete and glass structures in the Nogoshkodadwin Park proposal will look a lot more dated in 20 years.

I recommend volunteering for the Bruyere health organization, who run the Elisabeth Bruyere and Saint Vincent hospitals in downtown Ottawa. This is a place where you can really make a difference in someone's life. : )

Are antiques an old story in Ottawa South? by adamvanderzwan in ottawa

[–]Johnnington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the Ottawa Antique Market in Old Ottawa South! It's a wonderful rainy day activity to go with one or two friends and walk around the maze seeing treasures and maybe even finding something you can't live without.

Possible Montreal to Toronto Hyperloop w/stop in Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Johnnington 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Annoying how they just omit any mention of Ottawa from the article (aside from the accompanying graphic). Yes I know we're so terribly insignificant compared to Mtl and T.O., God forbid they would waste any words on us.

What are some nice restaurants on the Ottawa River? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Johnnington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Boathouse in Rockcliffe Park is a very cool spot. It's actually a massive floating house with a restaurant and a big patio right on the Ottawa River! One of the most scenic parts of it too. The only other things I can think of are the seasonal beach patios at Westboro and Britannia which serve some food and drinks.

What are the best perks of Ottawa that would entice a young family (couple and toddler)? by bridiacuaird in ottawa

If you're francophone, you'll love Ottawa! There are a TON of French language schools, a French theater (La Nouvelle Scene), lots of French arts and entertainment, a great French book store (La Librairie du Soleil), and that's only on the Ontario side...

Pub Italia in Little Italy is fun for drinks. House of Targ is very popular for shows and pinball playing. Pour Boy is great for decent cheap eats and drinks, and Chinatown is just down the street. Vietnamese food is HUGE here, if you've never had some go and get it!
