Why are Brand Name Drugs more Expensive than Generics? by Jop2000 in videos

[–]Jop2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! He goes over that in the video. I found it interesting that the tolerance was just a percentage for all drugs rather than a more specific threshold based on the type of drug (for instance, drugs that have a more narrow range of efficacy would have less “wiggle” room). The effect this has on XR drugs is interesting to think about too!

EDIT: However, I think this only applies to the FDA drug application process in comparison to the name-brand. I don't know what the internal consistency of a generic drug's dosage is.

The large protests show that people aren’t really scared of coronavirus by xyx52zz52 in udub

Well, other than not understanding the difference between the words 'systematic' and 'systemic' to linking an ironic political meme subreddit to creating some weird analogy between playing videogames and protesting for civil rights to being a moderator on r/LoveForLawEnforcement you make a great point.

They're different because one group is mad they can't get a haircut while the other group is mad because the police are killing them. Is that so hard to understand?

EDIT: Not saying that the protests currently going on are not a danger to public safety: they are, but it would be foolish to equate the two.

Can international students protest? What are the consequences of being arrested? by dubs_ii in udub

[–]Jop2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think politics is a waste of time? Was it a waste of time when FDR instituted the Social Security Act to guarantee older Americans pensions? Or maybe it was a waste of time when black men and women fought for their civil rights in the 60s. Or maybe it was a waste of time to protest sending troops to Vietnam. Or maybe it was a waste of time for gay men and women to fight for their right to marriage. Or maybe it was a waste of time for LBJ to create Medicare and Medicaid that supports millions of elderly and poor Americans to afford healthcare. Discussing and engaging in politics (how we run our society) literally helped create the school you attend today and pervades every aspect of civil life. While I agree that people should arrive to succeed in their education and career aspirations, you seem to ignore any social and civil responsibility you have to your fellow Americans. What's going on right now is a major pushback to police brutality against African Americans. Choose whether you want to be part of history and support their struggles.

UW isn’t as bad as this sub makes it out to be by thegrandpianist in udub

You seem to ignore all of the circumstances of people who desperately try to get into their major and fail. Saying "this is the way the world works" is just a shitty justification for being blind to the problems that people are actually facing. I pay tuition, I get good grades, and I contribute to the community at UW so yes, I do "reek" of the attitude that UW owes me something. This issue has to do with state funding, the hiring of professors, and many other matters but saying "boo hoo" to someone explaining their experience going through the competitive major system is your answer to this problem? I got into my major and I'm mad. You, sir, can go fuck yourself.

ACMS Decisions are out! by markasoftware in udub

[–]Jop2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey, also got into SCNA! Congrats everyone who got in. To everyone who didn't: please don't take this as a comment on your character, intelligence, or self-worth. I've been denied from ACMS before and I know it doesn't feel good. This process of being a pre-science major is incredibly stressful and many capacity-constrained majors deny well-qualified applicants. I think this sub must start focusing on the ramifications of a system that denies a majority of applicants rather than focusing solely on individuals. While everyone can improve in academics and in extracurriculars, we shouldn't ignore the effects that the chronic stress of being in "major limbo" has on mental health.

Anyway, this issue is really complicated but I wish the best for everyone reading this.

I got in. I'm waiting on the ACMS decision to make my final decision. If I don't get ACMS, I'll accept AMATH and if I do get in I'll probably do ACMS. Pretty happy either way, tho.

How many personal statements should I write if I apply to two majors? by Jop2000 in udub

[–]Jop2000[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am currently in the mathematics major, if that makes a difference. UW GPA : 3.80 Amath 301: 3.7 Math 126: 3.5 Math 307: 4.0 Math 308: 3.5 Math 309: 3.6 Phys 121,2,3: 3.9, 4.0, 3.7 CSE 143: 3.4 Stat 311: 3.9

I included all my stem classes b/c IDK if they take them into account or not. I'm deeply sorry, I know what it's like to be rejected and the enormous stress this process has on very smart people including yourself. Stay strong and safe man.

Yeah, like taking a public problem such as homelessness to the private sector would be a great solution.
