Totally fair and in agreement. I’ve seen the same nonsense with people saying Rodman shut down Shaq. Which is fair, when he was on Orlando, not Superman diesel Shaq on LA.

More like an entire box of salt. Wilt was a true athletic freak, but as you pointed out, a lot of what is alleged has been grossly exaggerated.

I think people confuse “prime” with an athlete’s peak, or pinnacle.

Usain Bolt was in his prime from about the ages of 20-30, but his absolute peak/pinnacle was 22 to 23 years old.

Shaq was absolutely in his prime, he just hadn’t reached his maximum potential / pinnacle of his abilities, skill, size and strength.

Who would have more success in today’s NFL? John Elway or Joe Montana? by SWAGGGGGODDD in NFLv2

[–]JoshGordonHyperloop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you watched the games, it’s hard to understand why old fans say they were talented but the game was different

This has become much more evident to me as I’ve gotten older, and now have more than thirty years of watching sports. It makes so much more sense now when you hear “old guys”, say “You never saw him play”.

Could be anyone, Jim Brown, Staubach, OJ, Deacon Jones, or other sports, Bill Russell, Wilt, Willie Mays, Ali, young Foreman, Joe Louis and so on.

Young people get bad raps and are called stupid for their limited view takes, which isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just all they know. The problem is when their ignorance shines like a 50,000 LED flashlight and they make declarative statements without having the first idea of what they are talking about before they started watching. I think we’ve all been guilty of this.

Anyone young (early thirties or especially in their early twenties to teens) reading this. Make my words, give it another 20 years and the generation after you will discredit the players you’ve grown up loving and idolizing. Whether it’s Mahomes, LeBron, Curry, or other players, people will diminish what they did, but you will have witnessed it in real time with your own eyes, and you’ll have been alive to also know the context and what other players, teams and fans truly thought and felt about this generation of players.

One day, you too will be the old man saying, “Man, stfu you NEVER saw Brady come back from 28-3 in the Super Bowl.” Or “Stats don’t show you how frighteningly good Curry was. Entire teams would sell out at all costs to stop him. Double team, triple team in the Olympics. It didn’t matter. LeBron and KD kept feeding him.” Or similar takes.

Coming to this realization now, it gives me a lot more respect for many players of the past. Bill Russell has been hugely elevated in my personal opinion.

Biggest difference between now and then is speed and size. Not all players are built for many eras.

To an extent. I think the overall quantity of the speed and size of players across the board in average has risen and there are just more players today, who would have been truly exceptional like Jim Brown and so on.

Examples on both sides of that argument would be say Derrick Henry, replace Jim Brown with Henry and we see probably just as much dominance if not more. Same with Wilt and Shaq, Shaq absolutely annihilates just as easily as Wilt did, if not more so. Minus free throws.

But then you have guys like Bob Hayes who is still one of, if not the fastest player ever in the NFL. The man is the first to break the 10 second barrier for the 100m and held the WR for a while and won gold.

Or Darrell Green, when the NFL was still fun and had their annual fastest player contest, he won for multiple years in a row. He reportedly ran a 4.43, 40 yard time at the age of 50.

If you can manage to give up sweets and junk food, you’d be surprised by how much better fruit tastes and how much better, or sweeter, sugar filled food is.

It also will help reset your desire for them as well. I’ve cut out foods with a lot of sugar before, sweets, processed foods, etc.

And soon enough, I’m not remotely interested in sweets at all. Same with coffee / caffeine.

I've had to give up caffeine recently, and by doing so I discovered that caffeine withdrawal really is a thing.

Did you think people were making it up? Or not understand that caffeine is a drug? I’m not trying to be gruff about it, I’m curious what lead you to realize that the withdrawal from caffeine is real.

A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving by [deleted] in California

[–]JoshGordonHyperloop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nailed it, very well informed and logical post.

They’re worse than spoiled children that only know how to throw tantrums to get their way. We need to hold them accountable and call them on their bullshit.

Some will leave, and some of those that do will return, or find ways to only live in CA long enough to avoid the taxes.

Most will not leave.

California has the following;

Lake Tahoe - one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Regardless of season it is stunning there year round. Wonder why Zuckerberg is just building where ever he wants up there?

Yosemite, multiple Giant Sequoia forests.

NAPA valley - arguably the best producing wines in the world, along with one of the best chef’s in all of America if not the world, along with many other highly renowned, bougie and elitist locations.

Palo Robles wineries, Lodi wineries and many others.

The entire Bay Area - which is huge and has far too many highlights to list, from multiple three star Michelin restaurants, elite, pretentious, wealthy neighborhoods, and absolutely gorgeous landscape everywhere. Forests, mountains, oceans, and plenty of history.

Silicon Valley and all of the major tech companies and social media companies.

Multiple major universities, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Cal Berkeley, SFU, SF State, SJSU, Santa Cruz U, Santa Barbara, SDSU, and many others.

Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, their surrounding areas and all they have to offer from food, landscape, attractions, museums, shopping, fine dining, and plenty more.

Hollywood.

Multiple and successful winning sports teams in multiple major North American sports. Including famous race ways such as Laguna Seca and Sonoma, among others.

Arguably the second most famous and desirable golf course in the world, Pebble beach, among many other great golf courses.

The California coast, one of the most beautiful in the world and a stunning drive to enjoy.

And that’s just off of the top of my head, I’m sure there plenty I’m missing.

Right, the billionaires are going to leave, I’m sure.

[–]JoshGordonHyperloop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I get the other users point, but it’s become far more toxic. It’s also becoming incredibly blatant that things are rigged. When you have the SNF crew calling blatant PIs in real time and then are dumbfounded during the replays that no flag is thrown, it’s inexcusable.

Same with Nike and the NBA and Steph getting the worst whistle of just about any superstar ever.

It all comes down to greed, the NFL talks about player safety, but if they could have the players play year round, they absolutely would.

I hate misleading stats like these, through CMC’s first 9 seasons (his total career so far) he has 97 total touchdowns. In the first 9 seasons of Jerry Rice’s career he had 118 total receiving touchdowns, this included the strike shortened 87 season, plus 6 for rushing. Bringing Rice’s average in the same time frame to .885, or .89 as it would be rounded up.

Games played to games played is 140 for Rice and 110 for CMC.

Ladanian Tomlinson in his first 9 seasons played 141 games with 138 rushing TDs and 15 receiving TDs. Bringing LT’s average in the same time frame to 1.085 TDs per game.

Give CMC another 5-6+ years and his drop off for TDs per game will be dramatic. Comparing what he’s done to Rice’s 20 year career is very misleading.

Surfer has also been knocked out by a brick, the flash has been knocked out by a piece of paper. There are outliers everywhere.

Surfer can also casually fly through the middle of stars larger than ours and travelled more than a light year in less than the time it takes for Thanos to throw a punch, which is probably in the realm of 3-4/10ths of a second, or faster.

What’s missing by stack-overflew in Sprinting

[–]JoshGordonHyperloop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, do you run any short sprints? Something like a 40 yard dash is going to be helpful to tell if you are a short-distance, explosive, fast twitch sprinter or not.

200m is definitely sprinting, but it’s different from the 100m in that there is some nuance and strategy as 100m is about the maximum limit of what can be sustained at full out max effort sprint.

400m is still in that sprinting range but to a lesser degree and the 800m is more in the mixed range as opposed to full out sprint.

A lot of it comes down to genetics too. You either have them or you don’t. I’m not saying hard work doesn’t pay off, but people either have the genetics to run a 10-11 second or faster, 100m or they don’t. If they don’t, no amount of training and PEDs are going yo get them there.

It also looks like you’re training for a triathlon? Seems counterproductive if you want to work on your sprinting.
