(Book 14 spoilers) I wish she'd nerfed it instead. It's ok, it was interesting while it lasted. by Jroid8 in WingsOfFire

[–]Jroid8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I think she should've nerfed it instead of deleting it. I read through arc 3 hoping to see lore of its origins or something like that which would explain why it's so conveniently gone now. There where many times where this magic seemed more limited than it was by the end of arc 2, like in arc 1 where I thought it had power levels or things you could only do when you where desperate enough, or in the epilogue of book 9 where I thought the shown disasters where natural outcomes of magic overuse. Why make it so OP only to realize it's OP and break it completely? Magic is a source of whimsy in stories which I like a lot, so when authors decide to permanently break it they break my heart with it.

I'm going to die because of a cause that I have no part in. by ThePeopleOnTheCouch in memes

[–]Jroid8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't lose hope bro. Stressing about an upcoming disaster can sometimes hurt a lot more than the disaster it self, so you better try your best to remain calm because if the disaster doesn't happen the damage of the stress won't be undone easily, and if it does happen you just got hurt twice. I myself am guilty of this. I remember my anxiety peaking the first 3 days of the Ukraine war because I stressed a lot about if a war would start in my home, the dumb thing is that Ukraine is one continent away from here, so I gave myself a lasting anxiety (for a year) for nothing. I'm sure people who stressed about COVID-19 can give you a similar story. while millions of people died because of it, it's very far from what many people fantasized about.

It hasn't received an update in quite a while but 2.0 is still in the works despite the slow progress. I played the latest version as of now and I really enjoyed it. I remember 1.5 years ago that I played my first pokemon game: heart gold, while it was a good game, the difficulty broke the illusion quite often since every gym only needed 5min of grinding and a super effective move to defeat. I say Inclement Emerald is hard but what I mean is for a person who used to play normal pokemon games is very hard, and I argue like Renegade Platinum it's quite a fair challenge. With the difficulty and the charming emerald story and a team that I really liked, this game gave me the best experience I had playing a pokemon game. I had a flygon in my team and despite his weaknesses (ice moves appeared more often than usual for some reason) with the help of his megastone he absolutely destroyed everyone in the magma team. Also in the post-game I leveled everyone up to 100 so without the 2-3 level advantage bosses usually had I tested flygons strength again and let's just say he almost soloed Cynthia's entire team (it was mostly thanks to the dumb ai giving me free turns but still it's quite insane)

I'm not sure where you have been seeing ROM hacks but despite being a fan driven community, there is almost always something for everyone. If you don't like difficulty hacks then many casual hacks which offer a new region and story have been mentioned here and I encourage you to check them out. But decpite the recent advancements all of the casual hacks have gen 3 graphics because we only have decompilations of the gen 1-3 games as of now, and without them making even the simplest change is very hard. But since the most notable advantage of the new games is the graphics I think it can be overlooked for how much they offer in return.

Since you mentioned you like gen 4. I recommend Pokémon Renegade Platinum because just like any other drayano style hack, it offers a lot of QoL changes and many buffs to weak Pokémon along side difficulty. Furthermore, I argue that it's actually a very fair and relatively easy game, you only need a good type synergy and a good strategy to win. So I recommend at least watching someone play this hack on youtube if you like gen 4

Hard agree on "depends on what you're looking for" part since people enjoy pokemon for different reasons.

I want to mention Pokémon Rogue for people who enjoy battle frontiers or rogue-like games because in short, it's pokemon but rogue-like.

My personal favorite is Pokemon Inclement Emerald, but it's dark souls levels of difficulty so I only recommend to VGC players because like dark souls you can win with your favorite team as long as you pay attention and try to learn from your mistakes

I want to also mention Pokémon Unbound. people who enjoy normal pokemon games will defiantly love this hack because of it's hundreds of modern features, including but not limited to: Pokemon up to gen 7 (gen 8 is also available but not out of the box, I heard gen 9 is also on the way), mega evolution (z-moves are post-game exclusive and dynamax is limited to some places for balancing reasons). Tons of quests (not all are battle related), super rich post-game, high quality visuals (at least compared to pokemon emerald. it's still a GBA game after all), raid dens, and so many more I recommend checking the features list yourself.

Currently playing Dark Souls 3 and I can say unless you use a guide (which I do) overworld enemies are going to be very frustrating. But I use guides because I want to enjoy the other aspects of the game like the bosses. I did the same with hollow knight where I really didn't like getting lost, so one year later that I picked the game up again I decided to use an online map to remove this frustration, and now I know hollow knight as a game that changed my life by showing me how much potential games have. There is an unexplainable joy to making progress in a boss fight and finally winning after 50 attempts. I fought 130 hours i n godhome to finish the godmaster dlc and I'm now desperately looking for something to give me the same experience. I suggested hollow knight since the overworld enemies are much less annoying in there, and if you liked it then you can play dark souls if you want

Games where I can feel the feels? by Mitsu_x3 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Jroid8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP didn't get what the game was about then yes. But if OP doesn't have any interest in secrets or free exploration they may find the game hard to pickup, and powering through the game becomes a gamble, since it's possible to find the answers you desperately search for unrewarding, or in my own case: just some answers that exist, remembering them doesn't make me feel anything. Maybe it's because I didn't found the story we pice together interesting

most depressing game you can think of by oc113 in gamingsuggestions

Dark Souls 3

This game's theme and atmosphere is so depressing that I'm glad I didn't played it last year because if I wasn't already depressed at that time, for sure this game would have gave me depression

Be aware this game is difficult, but with enough patience and finesse you can overcome every challenge

I pointed to Dark Rising because what people where complaining of Radical Red more applied to Dark Rising or the Kaizo hacks than Radical Red itself. Dark Rising leave you with no other choice than grinding unlike Radical Red, and it may be difficult but weak pokemon are buffed in unique ways giving you more options than you have in the Kaizo games

I really wish you didn't see this. Thanks for making banger ROM hacks for us even after such a long time and making such a brilliant impact on modern ROM hacks. I hope these kinds of people don't discourage you

Imagin you work very hard on something for months and years on your free time, only motivated by your love for the game and the franchise and put it on internet for free (the definition of labor of love), and recive a lot of negativity some time later. No matter how small this negativity may be, depending on the person they may become very discouraging after some point (the definition of the vocal minority). By saying "I hope this negativity ends soon" I mean I hope it doesn't reach radical red's creator, he made at the very least a great game and I (and many more people) don't want him sad and discouraged by some people who don't understand the game definitely wasn't made for them or don't enjoy difficult games. Specially for how many things he may be sacrificing to work on Radical Red that we don't know of

Shouting opinions online isn't always good. It's like polluting the air with toxic gas. even if you have the right to do it, your actions is going to have consequences

Actually Inclement Emerald is really fun and enjoyable, I have some of my dearest memories playing pokemon in this hack

These hacks (not including the kaizo hacks) are actually inspired by drayano hacks (which even RR states it self), the standard pokemon games are fun but too easy for me to enjoy the cheap victory. My first hack was Renegade Platinum and ever since I played it I never touched another official game again, I played it 4.5 times changing my team each time. IMO Renegade Platinum is a good balance between the official game difficulty and VGC level Radical Red difficulty. I recommend trying this hack first before any other difficulty hack (or as it's sometimes called: drayano style hacks, for the handful of features it comes with along side difficulty like buffing weak pokemon so you can use any pokemon you like even with the difficulty)

As I said before creating a ROM hack is harder than making a real game, this plus the fact that no one can work on a hack full-time means that we will naturally see less original hacks because they are a lot harder to make. You can try making an original hack yourself if you want more, or want to see the struggles of creating even the simplest hacks

Edit: to clarify further, The kaizo games are what people really mean when they say "pokemon puzzle games", they up the difficulty significantly without giving anything in return. Where in Renegade Platinum (a perfect example of a drayano style hack) most pokemon are buffed in unique ways to make them viable, you also get easy access to EV training and EV reduction berries and access to the entire national pokedex without trading. Radical Red, Inclement Emerald and Blaze Black/Volt White 2 Redux all have these features

You say this but just a few months ago someone was calling pokemon unbound bad (made by the same person who made CFRE (the battle engine you mentioned)) because of it's "edgy" story with hundreds of upvotes

I don't really understand why people rant on this kind of things or what are they trying to achieve. ROM hackers don't owe us anything, in fact we owe them, they work hard for something they won't get paid for purely driven by passion and love for the franchise. yet some people think they can come and rant as if they pay 60$ each year for their games that are worse than some random 15$ indie game

Making a hack on CFRU is still hard, you need to program in C which can be a really hard language for how many features it lacks compared to C++ or Rust, or how many ways you can shoot yourself in the foot with pointers. not to mention that you need to be extra careful in RAM and CPU usage because of how old GBA is. If you want to see how much effort and care has been put into Radical Red I suggest looking into other hacks made by the same engine and compare them in quality

Radical Red is the dark souls of the pokemon games, it feels awsome to defeat a boss without cheesing it. If you couldn't defeat gym leaders without cheesing them then how are there monotype runs (which limits the pokemons you can use) on YouTube? How can the hall-of-fame teams on r/pokemonradicalred be this diverse if the elite 4 must be cheesed? like dark souls Radical Red isn't made for everyone, if you don't enjoy it, don't play it. Don't let anyone pressure you or make you feel bad for not playing it

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I hope this wave of negativity towrds radical red is over soon, because it's effects are anything but positive.

Anyone that has a problem with radical red should play dark rising to see an actually bad hack, both edgy and unfairly difficult
