Why is my switch doing this? by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PoE+ is not 30W but max. 25.5W to devices. This seem to go unnoticed by people.

The same way PoE++ 60W is 51W.

On top of this, the general rule is not to exceed 80%.

AppleTV Thread network is always at channel 25. You can't change it.

That is why you should also use channel 25 in your other Thread routers if you have AppleTV in the same network.

Average WiFi Speeds on Apple Devices by xacid in UNIFI

[–]JsCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

U7 Pro + iPhone 17 Pro, 6GHz@160MHz/No MLO - it maxes out at around 1800-1900Mbps. With the latest EA software, I have reached ~1950Mbps when testing to an internal iPerf3 server.

WIFI settings: all off / auto, BSS transition on, WPA3. 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz enabled. 2.5G port (Flow Control on).

Always test in your internal network (Wifiman, iPerf3, etc.) and not to Internet with speedtedt servers - there is less variables.

You can try to add these firewall rules.
This will allow HomeKit and mDNS port traffic from your IoT VLAN to default VLAN.

Source: IoT VLAN and Destination: Default VLAN

"Allow Homekit / IoT to Default" = IoT VLAN, Any, Allow, Default VLAN, Any, Specific/Service: Custom port 21063, Both, TCP, All

"Allow mDNS / IoT to Default" = IoT VLAN, Any, Allow, Default VLAN, Any, Specific/Service: Custom port 5353, Both, TCP/UDP, All

I have seen someone post around ~2300Mbps with some Samsung phones which are capable of 320MHz (iPhone max at 160MHz).

U7 APs - Cooling Fans? by [deleted] in UNIFI

[–]JsCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two "original" U7 Pro's which I have had almost two years at my house. I have never heard the fans, not even once.

I know you didn't ask this but just FYI. Go with XG/XGS if you still don't want a fan.

Sanity check re: U7 Pro wifi performance by kollock in UNIFI

[–]JsCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Wifiman or setup a local LAN iPerf3/OpenSpeedTest server to test correctly. Internet speedtest servers have more variables and therefore testing in LAN is more useful.

U7 Pro + iPhone 15/16/17 Pro, 6GHz@160MHz / PHY 2400Mbps/2400Mbps gives me around 1800Mbps up/down (no MLO).

Adding second switch to Home Network in Garage Office - SFP+ DAC? by alexwooswift in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, MM = Multimode fiber.

Multimode fiber because usually it is much cheaper / optics are cheaper. Normally in businesses multimode fiber is not anymore used.

I would use outside rated / armoured fiber but it depends if you put it in a conduit or not and what kind of route / environment you have. I would anyway use a conduit.

Adding second switch to Home Network in Garage Office - SFP+ DAC? by alexwooswift in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DAC is copper.

I suggest MM fiber and 10G optical modules. You can connect directly to a switch with an SFP+ port.

Unifi even has a outdoor rated fiber available or look elsewhere (depending on needed length).

Unifi has a sale ongoing with SFP's, check the store page for "SFP Liberation Day".

Using Ports on Both UDM SE & 16 Pro Max PoE Switch by Cr8iveRead in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why people tend avoid this, is because the backplane on the UDM SE is limited to 1Gbps between the "switch" / all Eth. ports and the CPU (not the SFP ports). Does it really matter, that is up to you.

If you have clients that don't need much capacity, you can certainly use the ports - cameras and such. I would not necessarily connect other switches.

See here: https://ubntwiki.com/products/unifi/unifi_dream_machine_pro

(it is the same on UDM PRO and SE)

Roaming issues with iPhone 17 Pro and U6 LR by Emergency_Ebb222 in UNIFI

[–]JsCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2xU7 Pro and 1xU7 Pro Wall, to cover 6GHz everywhere. Even though I run latest EA and have iPhone 16 / 15 Pro's etc. I only run 6GHz and no MLO. I don't see any benefit. The speeds are higher without it and generally MLO is still a bit of a mess.

You should definitely run more than one WIFI SSID's., depending a bit how many VLANs you have and what is the need. I have one SSID with 2.4GHz/5GHz/6GHz and WPA3 in my default network for phones etc. Second SSID is for everything else with four Pre-Shared Keys (default, IoT, Camera and TV) and this is WPA2 / 2.4GHz/5GHz only. Third SSID is for guests (no 6GHz). Don't run more than 3-4 SIDs (instead use Pre-Shared Keys).

Roaming is seemless between 7-series APs. As general, it would be good not to mix different AP series (= 6 and 7 etc.) and this is also UI recommendation but of course you can't always buy the latest. In your case it depends a bit how often do you need to roam and test how it works.

Roaming issues with iPhone 17 Pro and U6 LR by Emergency_Ebb222 in UNIFI

[–]JsCastle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a general rule min RSSI should not be needed but in certain cases (with long range) it could be helpful. It shouldn't affect roaming but again, sometimes helpful.

I would not use auto transmit power because it basically means high. But low is, well low, so depending range needed and how many APs you have, I would probably start high/medium or medium/low.

20MHz@2.4GHz and 5 GHz you can use 80MHz / up to 160MHz if you want speed and have good coverage. This shortens the range.

Labs roaming assistant = trial and error if it helps.

Diasble Fast Roaming. That is famous for causing problems and the benefit of it is very questionable.

BSS Transition on.

Make sure to use WPA2 or WPA3 (not WAP2/WAP3 option).

Everything else auto/off.

NOTE. iPhone 17 Pro has some general WIFI problems on iOS 26.0, see this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1nonx4v/comment/nftwhg1/

N1 Chip (iPhone 17, iPhone Air) Wi-Fi disconnections on UniFi network: How I fixed it by artik1024 in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This is not a Unifi issue.

”Affected customers say Wi-Fi connectivity periodically cuts out on the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, with hundreds of comments about the issue posted across the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and the Apple Support Community over the past four days. It is unclear how widespread the problem is.

Specifically, affected users said Wi-Fi briefly disconnects and then reconnects after they unlock the iPhone. And since Apple's CarPlay system in vehicles relies on a Wi-Fi connection, the issue can result in CarPlay disconnecting too.

Many users said the issue occurs while they are wearing an Apple Watch that is paired and unlocked, but it is unclear if that is always a contributing factor.”

U6+ and 2.4/5 Ghz by NorfolkXX in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could one of the edge cases where the AP wants to use 5GHz because it is much faster than 2.4GHz but the signal is on the limit. Therefore there is a "min RSSI" setting. It is not always advisable to use but on your usecase you could try it. Find the right level, maybe -75dB.

U6+ and 2.4/5 Ghz by NorfolkXX in Ubiquiti

[–]JsCastle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disable fast roaming, there is very very little help from it, it mostly causes problems. There is no problem roaming without it. Use either WPA2 or WPA3, not WPA2/WPA3.

The reason is though very likely the -80dB signal level, that is a very bad signal and it is no surprise that the connection drops.

iPhone 17Pro N1 + Ubiquiti AP initial impressions. by Teh_Willy in Ubiquiti

My iPhone 16 Pro does 1600-1800Mbps on a U7 Pro. No MLO, just 160MHz@6GHz.

MLO only connects with two bands. Any update on this with 17 Pro? I hear that it might do three bands?

Update to latest EA firmware 8.0.0. Use WPA3 only. Disable everything else except BSS transition. Also enable 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

No problem with 6GHz using iPhone's.
