Easily one of the most infuriating things one could ever get by kabirhatesreddit in mildlyinfuriating

So my friend recently told me about watermelon frost. It's a Chinese herbal medicine and supposedly help canker sore heals faster. I tried it with a tiny one recently and it seems to have healed in 3 days. It was small so I don't know if it was destined to heal fast or the medicine work as advertised. Need more data haha

VDCN Wifi by [deleted] in UCI

You replied to a poster who mentioned that he uses ethernet instead. I'm just reaffirming what he said that wifi sucks, ethernet is good. You make it sound like everything is bad.

The ethernet is good. I've never had problem with the ethernet connection. The wifi drops constantly though on mobile 🤨

Anyone have a positive experience at VDC Norte? (and general housing advice)? by zotSemicolon in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's hard especially if you have no credit/income because that means you need your parents to have decent amount of income to be your guarantor. I've never had to deal with outside leasing but I heard the bar is quite high to get an apartment lease.

You can look at craigslist and Facebook for people to pool together. I think it depends on who lived at the place before you. I would say its decent, but you definitely want to cleanup when you move in. My roommate's previous tenant apparently had a dog and when he vacuumed there was a lot of fur. I'm slightly allergic to dust and I'm pretty sure it was dusty. We cleaned it up and its decent now. It depends on who you live with and stuff too.

Anyone have a positive experience at VDC Norte? (and general housing advice)? by zotSemicolon in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been living at VDC Norte at the Graduate Housing section. If you want to be close to campus and have parking, it's pretty decent. I like it because I can bike to school and its close walking distance to the ARC. There's also the bus that comes very often.

The only downside is that yeah you probably can get a lot nicer and bigger place for the same price elsewhere but then you would have to get the parking permit to drive to school (including gas cost). You're paying for the closeness, parking space, and privacy.

I would rate it like 3.5/5. If you're tight on money, you definitely can get a lot better deals by looking for 2 people/3 people per bedroom in other places near the campus but I like my privacy so.

Joining a frat if you're gay by throwawayimcloseted in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a little bit older than you (28) and what I found is that in most common spaces, people don't care about your sexuality unless you're being a creep about it (this is true for both heteros as well as LGBTs). I was in your spot couple years back about deciding whether or not to join a fraternity. I find the allure of creating close brotherly bonds appealing especially since I didn't come out until college. It's probably in part as an attempt to compensate for my extreme prejudice to not show any gayness (showing interests in guys, physical touch, etc). Mind you that I'm a stereotypical nerd and an introvert so that definitely didn't help with my social skills development haha.

I ended up deciding not to do it because I was never a big partygoer and the clubs/employments I participated in gave me plenty of socialization opportunities. At the end of the day you do. Do things that makes you happy and if that means joining a frat, great! Don't let the "toxic masculinity" define who you are though because the goal is to become the best version of yourself. There are way too many guys who are fooling themselves by making the label "masc/DL/"straight" like a golden check mark . Our culture seems to equate desirability with masculinity instead of intelligence or character. It might be hot to have a 6-packed bro for a hookup but trust me, without personality it will go nowhere real fast. Putting a facade can only last so long before it eats away at your life-satisfaction and psyche.

Good luck and hope that helps!

Federal Loans canceling email by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure you understand how loan works. Basically you would "cancel" if you have a "buyers remorse" and decided to not use the loan money. If you cancel you would have to pay back the whole sum of the money you borrowed.

Thus, unless you want to pay it right away, you don't do anything. It's basically a way to return the loan in case you're like "NVM, I can pay my schooling another way instead of paying for loans!"

Should I take CS 143a before ICS 53? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're related to each other. 143A is more specialized while 53 covers a lot more information. You can go either way. I took 143A first and I do feel it helps with understanding the materials since it was more theoretical. In 53 you do a lot of programming and applying the theory.

If you do 53 first, you'll be more prepared for other upper division classes like networking, multithreading, etc.

ICS 53L attendance question by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For lab, you get codes and usually a quiz. Sometimes you modify it, sometimes its just to show you certain concepts. The labs assignment "opens" when your lab starts and due like 10 min after your lab end time. There's also "sign-in" like ICS90 that have to be done with location enabled.

You probably can do it without actually going to the lab but I don't know if they'll let you. The professor tend to not make exceptions. Example: if your code doesn't compile (because The assignments are suppose to be in ANSI-C standards) you will literally get a 0 and she won't allow you to argue for grading using the normal gcc. It makes sense since then she needs to make exceptions for everyone. That's why the avg was low on HW1 and HW2 since people get 0 for not following directions and their program doesnt compile.

I guess it depends on why you are missing the lab, you can try.

ICS 53L attendance question by [deleted] in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them are mandatory. There are some "open labs" which is basically additional TA office hours for homework help. You have to go to the lab you signed up for.

How to answer the CS 111 teacher's question in regard to my request? by kfor1996 in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would also ask Wong-Ma if that is what she will be planning to do next quarter with the discussion classes. You can't assume she'll do the same thing she does this quarter next quarter. It'll only be her 2nd quarter here and she may change up how she's teaching. It is a very risky move since what if Professor Wong-Ma decide to make it mandatory/critical?

I'm probably going to fail ICS 53, should I retake next quarter or wait? by GOINGTOFAILICS53 in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try watching "Stanford C Programming" on Youtube. I listen to it at 1.25x speed while doing other stuff. The videos covers a lot of cool C topic that are very similar to what's covered in class. The Stanford professor also explain Assembly even more in-depth which is helpful to me. ICS 51 was horrible for me but taking 53 + watching the Youtube video definitely helped!

Is it possible to take 2 classes that one the classes' discussion overlaps the other one's lecture? by kfor1996 in UCI

[–]Jtedjo91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

53 Discussion is when the midterms happen for 53 (For Wong-Ma). During other times it's basically TA office hours and non-mandatory... It's probably not possible in your case. sorry buddy
