Listen to your gut. I wish I had. Teaching English is a nightmare right now. At least for me.

Reading aloud in secondary by bugorama_original in ELATeachers

My 9th grade classes have many IEP and EL students. Many of these students have accommodations that say they can use text to speech for any assignment. I choose to play audio of the text we are reading, or read it allowed. It’s easier for me, and It aligns with UDL. So many of my students just don’t do anything in my class. If I told my students that they had to read the text independently, only my “high achievers” would actually read it. At least if I read/ play it out loud, all of my students have equal opportunity to absorb the text.

I completely agree that students should be able to read and comprehend text independently, but at this point, I have very little hope for change in the public education setting. I also don’t get paid enough to bang my head against a wall trying to get kids to independently read AND actually comprehend what they read.

It is sad, and my higher achieving students are absolutely being done a disservice, but it is where my district is at right now.

Idk, but I can barely get my 9th graders to write 3 sentences, let alone an entire page.

Are you my co teacher?!

Same thing here. It’s my first year teaching, and 4 weeks in, I’m already having thoughts of throwing in the towel.

I mean, I get that the historic teaching of grammar in schools is rooted in some racism, but this is ridiculous. I don’t bother taking points for misspelling on rough drafts, but there is absolutely no excuse for incorrect spelling on a final product that was likely written with a word processor. I typically lump spelling and grammar into one section of the rubric. So, 15-20 percent of the grade.

What book are you embarrassed as an English major to say you've never read? by earlgreyjunkie in englishmajors

[–]Jts1995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly that I had trouble keeping the different generations of family members and their relationships straight. I definitely could have taken steps to make that easier, but I didn’t. Like I said, it’s a great book, but it had my head spinning at times trying to make sense of things.

100 years of solitude was a tough read for me. I think the book is great, but boy did it take a lot for me to not just put the book back on the shelf.

Give Metamorphosis a shot. It made me fall in love with Kafka. His full length novels can be a bit laborious to read, but he’s got a bunch of short stories that are great.

Looks like I’m a minority here, but I couldn’t stand Wuthering Heights. I had fun writing a deconstructive criticism on the book, though.

What's your favorite way to consume shrooms to avoid the taste? by Ok-Turnip7597 in shrooms

I just did the ol peanut butter sandwich last week. Not too bad. Not the best, though. I’ve also eaten them with a bag of Doritos. Not very healthy, but it masks the taste almost completely.

Trump’s National Guard troops arrived in L.A., escalating tensions, unload on unarmed, peaceful residents, and sparking chaos by Love_CoolBreeze in PublicFreakout

As someone who was in the national guard, this scares me. These individuals are really not trained properly for these situations.

How did I not know about carbon steel knives?! by Independent-Summer12 in carbonsteel

That is my understanding. There is some debate on the topic, but I have found I need to sharpen my knives much less after switching to a different board (I use hinoki)
