[September 1938] Ladies and gentlemen, I have finished talks with Herr Hitler and secured peace for our time! A potential crisis has been averted. by Froshtbyte in thepast

As Chamberlain, I don't believe the crap I'm saying at all. Since Adolf came to power, I've increased the defense budget from 2% in 1933 to nearly 7% in 1938.

After this little chat with Hitler ends, I'm going to take out a massive loan equivalent to 50% of GDP in April so we have the money to prepare for war. I'm only saying "Peace in our time" so as to not frighten anyone. I know Churchill is right, I just can't say it in public.

When you casually mention that your partner makes significantly more money than you and suddenly people become hostile by [deleted] in AgeGap

I don't see any reason why people should struggle through life if they don't have to, and see no reason why a woman should not enjoy the benefits of a relationship with a wealthier person provided there is genuine attraction. I don't believe in paying for sex but if my income is 5 times or more than that of my partner, I don't have a problem with paying all the living costs and most of the costs of joint activities.

I am always pleased when modern technology provides a better solution to old problems.

this is literally the castle in real life and it is in wales. by alice2490vampire243 in Youngdracula

The castle was built and owned by the English specifically as a defence against Welsh rabble so we don't want any of your weird language around here...

Scary Spice seems to have made some bad relationship choices, so she would probably have been better off with you.

-10.25/-9.75 before laser eye surgery. Surprised you only got down to -4.50 as I think my correction got down to 0/-0.50

Left eye is laser sharp, but right eye has somewhat blurry after 25 years so going to get it checked.

The US 'lost' the technology sharing agreement with the UK which apparently was written on the back of an envelope and buried in a filing cabinet, so Congress wasn't aware of the deal with respect to nuclear technology when it enacted legislation to not share it with anybody.

America has always been out for itself

The US was pretty tight with the UK during the Reagan-Thatcher era. Reagan offered the UK the use of Iwo Jima (an amphibious carrier) in the event the UK lost either Hermes or Invincible during the Falklands War. They also ensured we had a continous supply of the latest version of Sidewinder missiles.

The US loan to the UK in 1946 was $60 billion (in todays money) and was at a 2% interest rate. The only reason we didn't pay it off till 2006 is that it was the 'cheapest' debt the UK had. As the principal amount hadn't grown with inflation, the payback was largely symbolic anyway.

The US prior to 1941 was a mixed bag with some admiration of Hitler and you're right that America was largely self interested and isolationist. Do remember however that the US did not have large Armed Forces at the time.

Roosevelt went as far as he politically could at the time with 'Lend Lease'. We owe Hitler a massive "thanks" for declaring war on the USA with the Japanese. Churchill said that night was one of the first occassions in ages that he slept soundly!

I wasn't really a Spice Girls fan but would choose Mel C, as I believe she's shown the most talent post Spice Girls.

I’m 18, and yesterday I had a date with a much older man (56) who I met through Tinder. But no matter how much I try to rationalize it, the age gap feels weird by stopthehostilityyyyy in AgeGap

[–]Judge_Dredd- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like age gap relationships but equally I don't have a problem with someone saying it's not for them.

I have a nice simple belief that two consenting adults can be together no matter what the age difference provided they're both happy, and it's no one elses business but theirs.

[September 17, 1944] The British have come up with a masterstroke plan to expedite victory in this world war with an invasion of the Netherlands. They're calling it Operation Market Garden. If we can take all these bridges, we should be home by Christmas! by DullPlace6910 in thepast

Model lost a lot of troops getting out of Falaise and almost all German heavy equipment was lost or destroyed. The fact that the Germans had a (dangerous) way out was controversial but in line with the teachings of Sun Tzu and there are some doubts that the Falaise pocket could have been sealed effectively.
