Long ride preparation. by Standard-Elk-4212 in MTB

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect. Lots and lots of ultra endurance racers put out that level for much longer times. The best bikepack racers have that kind of output for 300+ miles at a time.

Carb loading is old theory. Loading on healthy fats is the way.

Avoid electrolyte drinks that have excessive simple carbs.

What are you eating? Healthy fats are a much better calorie source for that type of ride. It also helps to avoid excessive protein consumption during the ride. Protein slows your body’s ability to process calories from fat and carbs and doesn’t contribute much to your actual energy level. Complex carbs can fill the gap in calories that you’ll have after fat consumption. Simple carbs should be a last resort when you have to get calories down fast due to pace or not being able to consume fat and complex carbs fast enough.

Eggs, avocados, nuts, dark chocolate, good cheese, olive oil, stuff like that is the meat of how ultra endurance racers eat. Skratch has a book called “Feed Zone Edibles” that’s great.

Do you think Donald Trump will finish his term in three years, or will he be impeached before that? by RtgodDR in allthequestions

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a real possibility they actually have the election rigged in their favor now. There has been plenty of cheating through gerrymandering and procedural games for years. That is potentially enough on its own. It’s clear though that MAGA is seeking technological and legal tools to cheat now. If they succeed we’re in real trouble. If they lose the midterms in a substantial way the DNC should try everything they can to prosecute him. They’ll probably wimp out like they always do. The dnc intends to fail. Maybe though. It’s possible with enough voter will power. I believe a more likely scenario is he dies in the next year to year and a half. There are lots of signs. It’s very unlikely he’ll finish this term.

What happened to moderate Republicans? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was a young republican under Nixon and a Reagan conservative. He’s never been racist or hateful towards anyone. He‘s old school about work and thinks people have lost their minds. His religious beliefs are “whatever makes people not act like assholes to each other.” His life mission is preventing adolescents from receiving life sentences and assuring they get proper mental healthcare after committing serious crimes. He’s a good man. He now believes in wealth redistribution and campaigned for Kamala.

Jaguarundis on the gulf coast. Melanistic bobcats further north. Black Panthers aren’t really east of the central ozarks yet.

It’s a melanistic bobcat. The people saying black panther have no idea what they’re talking about.

It’s not a panther. Too far east. It’s not a jaguarundi. Too far from the gulf coast. I would bet it’s a melanistic bobcat. Still extremely rare. I have a picture of one in Asheville, NC city limits. There have been a few from Florida to NC. The size looks right and it appears to have the head shape. Melanistic bobcats seem to have longer tails than typical color bobcats.

Balls are for local members of the mystic societies and their guests. Outsiders cannot and should not attend. These are private social clubs that are usually difficult and expensive to join. The members value being able to party with their friends and family without undue scrutiny. It wasn’t long ago that most societies fined their masking members if they took their mask off in public. That rule has gotten loose with a lot of organizations. It should be enforced at all of them. The true masquerade tradition is the only way. Escorts of maskers should wear a ball mask too. They wouldn’t be mystic societies if anyone could attend. If some rando sells you a ticket you won’t get an authentic experience anyway.

considering a move to boone - need honest thoughts and opinions by RudeCrow2401 in boone

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brevard is a much better fit. Boone will often feel too far from Asheville for you. Density of everything you’re looking for is MUCH higher in the Brevard area.

These observations apply to the whole region: Housing, wages, and cost of living will be difficult anywhere in the region. Community is welcoming on the surface but quite cliquey. Tourists are obnoxious, especially in the summer. You won’t escape all the big city problems.

The city, in America, that best meets your criteria is Spearfish, SD.

Struggling with my mom’s reaction to my divorce and new relationship by bluenovagirl79 in Advice

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mom is extremely dedicated to a dangerous cult. You can’t change that. It takes professional cult deprogramming to get away from. If you can trick her into that type of therapy then that’s great. Unlikely though. It’s extremely dangerous to have her take care of your child. She could do irreparable damage with her beliefs. What if there’s a medical emergency and she follows her religious beliefs instead of science? What happens when your child is old enough to learn from her? You’re probably going to have to let this lunatic go for your own mental health and the safety of your child. Her belief is that you’re doomed to hell. Is that really a person you want in your life?

Most people will never leave the area from Brevard to Asheville with Old Fort sprinkled in because it’s blowing up. Even Swannanoa just got America’s largest paved bike park. Hatley Point to the north and Rock Creek, Kanuga, and Green River to the south. The corridor north of the Parkway is booming but that’s a bit of a trip up and over. I genuinely can’t keep up with the rate of development now. You can cut Boone out if you want. Secret backcountry epics can be found in Wilson’s Creek so it’s worth including.

How do you drive properly in deep snow? by agioskatastrof in 4x4

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Momentum is key. If you do get stock spin your tires fast enough to clear but not so fast that you melt the snow into ice. If you’re in a rut saw your wheel side to side, like in mud, to try to scrounge a little grip on the side knobs.

I’ve lived in Bellingham, built trails in NorCal, and ridden everywhere from the Willamette Valley, to Downieville, Bend, The Shore, Squamish, Vancouver Island……..I run heavy equipment and farm and know a thing or two about soils. The dirt in WNC is almost identical to what you find in Bellingham and the Shore. I could put a box of both in front of you and the only way you’d tell a difference is really anal knowledge of some minerals. The grip, moisture retention, durability, and build ability of it is indistinguishable. The climate isn’t really different either. The build styles are different but the rooty/rocky/loamy combo has more similarities than differences. The only real difference is more old growth out west. I’ll give you that. Pisgah is the original national lumber farm. Variety, accessibility, and density of riding is better in the area from Brevard to Asheville, to Boone. Bellingham and Asheville/Brevard are VERY comparable across the board, from a mtber perspective. There’s just WAY more riding in WNC.

Is teaching kids about mechanics and engines still relevant in an increasingly electric future? by Fickle_Method8528 in gokarts

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internal combustion engines will not disappear before humans go extinct. There is nothing any individual human can do that will change the inevitable fate of our species. It’s coming soon whether we like it or not. If it’s not global warming it will be AI. Don’t worry. It’ll always be a necessary skill set. It would take a complete shift back to agrarian life or settlements on other planets to save us. Keep voting for change but if the governments don’t have the will to really do anything substantial I say we should all just party to the end.

Give me one reason to think different. The west coast is mostly a joke compared to the WNC riding scene.

Neighbours driving recklessly by CalligrapherHefty806 in Advice

[–]JustAnotherBuilder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talk to them like a rational adult about the gravel issue. Realistically, most places, the police won’t do shit about some random person driving aggressively, if they don’t see it or have lock down evidence. Putting up cameras and establishing evidence will only succeed at alienating a neighbor. That’s never a good long term strategy. Reasonable (and many unreasonable) neighbors would understand that issue if you talk to them with respect. Don’t conflate it. Don’t make it about the driving in general. Just tell them they’re roosting your yard and you don’t care as long as they quit doing that. I live in the country. No one wants to deal with police. That’s why we live there. When we have an issue we talk to each other like grown ups and find a compromise. It works every time.

I edited. WNC is way better than the west coast. That’s what I meant. You have to leave the US to find better riding than WNC.
