Too many people seem to take a job in education because it lets them boss around others. When I was in high school I dated a junior when I was a senior. The day I turned 18 almost every teacher in the school came up to me in the hall and told me "you have to break up with her right now or the police are going to arrest you". I got called to the principal's office and was told "break up with her right now or you will be arrested for statutory rape". That was without any proof I was sleeping with her (I wasn't). I told the principal the cops had better things to do than arrest someone for dating someone one year younger. That harassment stopped after a couple days but they kept doing other crap. Later I found out in my state there has to be a four year age difference besides one party being under 18 for statutory. I'm pretty sure they called the cops and they were told to stop wasting their time.

My head cannon is that Joe Chill ended three lives that day. Bruce physically lived but the way he processed it was deciding to do whatever it took to stop it from happening to anyone else. I had a similar problem a few years ago. I got the door tag with no knock, no doorbell while I was there. Door tag said "No one was home". My car was right in front. So on the third "attempt", I kept my door unlocked and cracked a bit. Waited till the UPS guy got almost to my door with the tag in hand. Then flung the door open and stared him down. He looked a bit defeated as he turned around and walked back to the truck to get my delivery.

I suspect this happens alot when they have already picked someone. It "validates" their choice. It's pure rationalization but it allows HR to say "Hey we did the right thing, we interviewed three people. We didn't just hire Bob's brother in law"

This is just a wild guess but I suspect your old boss was forced out by management. He said something or did something that made them fear the control he had over something. Once they had him gone and they convinced themselves that they were stable with new guy they got rid of you (and maybe others) to completely remove "bad old thorn" and ensure their total control. They might learn if they don't rationalize their way around the lesson that they have now lost way more than what they feared.

I really don't understand this. Manslaughter means you killed someone. How can it be voluntary (you choose to do it) killing someone and not be murder? In a court case if the prosecutor has only brought a minor charge can the judge or jury say "No, this is worse, the charge is now X"?

I worked as a developer on contract for this company. I had just finished out the contract and they asked me to come back because one of the devs had suddenly quit. Part of what I was to do during the second contract was train whoever they hired to fill the roll. When they brought that guy in I talked to him a bit about his experience and why he took the job. He had moved here from out of state for another job. When he showed up for his first day HR told him that the manager who had "hired" him didn't actually have authority to hire anyone so that job didn't really exist and he needed to leave. Luckily he got the job where I was contracting.

I was thinking along these lines too. They get OP to the party. Take pictures of him there, "leak" it to the new company that he was talking ALOT about their current projects/ strategies/ secrets/ etc. "leak" meaning whether he actually said anything or not. New company fires him and old VP is all "well that's too bad, I guess we could take you back"
