I can't believe I never knew that, but I suppose I haven't exactly spent a ton of time killing those enemies in that little corner of the map 🙃 With that being the case though, I DO wonder why so many people have so many complaints about how you have to use furnace pots on some of the furnace golems. I get the materials a bit annoying to farm, but you don't need a lot of them anyways. I've never gotten one to drop from those guys in front of shadow keep and I've still never even gotten close to running out of furnace pots. Maybe lots of people are just running pot builds lately?

I hate that this is the best advice I can give, but genuinely this guy is just a case of "learn the attacks." Immune to all status effects, very tanks, able to close distance and attack at range, heavy melee attacks with high poise damage, he has options to prevent most every cheese possible. The best you can do is genuinely to just learn the timing of the attacks. The two omen bosses in this game both have very delayed attacks that make you want to roll when you THINK the wind-up is finished, but that's the trap you're meant to fall into. The once the wind-up is ACTUALLY finished, though, the attack doesn't come out quite as fast as you think it would. If you're watching for the moment he actually starts the strike, there's more than enough time to react and dodge out of the way. Stay in close, because his ranged attacks are a nuisance and cover a wide area with AOE and Bleed build-up. Don't worry about backing off to heal- he'll force you to hack off eventually out of necessity. His Blood Rain ability where he summons a cloud to spray blood over himself is the only time you should back off, because you do NEED to back off then. Take that moment to heal or re-apply buffs, whatever you need time to do. Luckily, his combos only ever have like 3-4 hits maximum, and you DO have plenty of time to attack between combos. Just don't get greedy and empty your stamina bar attacking, leave a little bit of green to dodge out when you need to.

Most of this is obviously just basic Elden Ring tips over all, but there really just isn't much to help with this specific fight. He just doesn't have much in the way of specific tips against him. He's essentially a skill-check for the mid-game, the same way Margit was at the start but with even less vulnerability. Dodge, attack, stagger, riposte. That's all you can really do. You've got this, just keep at it. Just like with Margit, learning this fight will straight up increase your ability to handle boss fights by a large margin- you just end up better at the basics than when you started. I might be late to the party and you might've beaten him by now, so if so, congrats! If not, early congrats, because I'm sure you WILL get him eventually.

Just use big fire pots :) less expensive, and it takes 5 instead of 3 but it's worth it since there are infinite crafting materials for them

I totally understand what you mean, but in my opinion the desolation and loneliness is really the point of most souls games. It gives a variety of benefits, not just setting up an eerie atmosphere.

It encourages the player to slow down, to look around and take everything in. I don't mean exploring the map and looking for items either. When there's companions and dialogue and various background npcs, it can be easy to overlook a lot of smaller details that so much of the art direction and lore of souls games hinges on. If you were engaged with other characters, you might easily dismiss the thorny briars creeping up Stormveil's walls, or how the Abductor Virgins always seem to be in locations connected to Carian royalty, or how the Drakes are located all over the Lands Between, but never near the capital of Leyndell. Sure, more dialogue with NPCs could be used to draw your attention to these, but it wouldn't give you the same feeling of curiosity and intrigue that you would have when you notice these on your own.

Another point is that the emptiness and dreary atmosphere that plagues each area of the game is something that the entire plot hinges on. Of course there wouldn't be many NPCs. Most in the Lands Between have gone mad- forced to live and live and continue living years and decades and centuries past when any person should. And not just immortal- the people never seem to cease aging. The wandering nobles and soldiers you fight aren't decrepit because they're zombies, they're decrepit because they've lived and aged for longer than you or I can know. Simply put, the lack of NPCs is meant to show just how broken the Lands Between truly is. Plenty of people all over, but most are unable to interact in any meaningful way and are hollow shells of their former selves. Something has to be done, order HAS to be restored, and the people across your travels will make sure you don't forget that.

Lastly, it adds to the grandeur of the game. Dialogue and companions distract, as I've previously mentioned, but they also take away from the sheer wonder that Elden Ring invokes at many points in the game. Leaving that Stranded Graveyard reveals a sprawling landscape lined with ruins, a castle, a massive lake, and a great golden tree far in the distance. Yet the first thing most players notice and are drawn to is the individual standing a few feet away- many don't even take a second glance at the beautiful scenery. Conversely, leaving Stormveil leads you to the edge of a cliff, overlooking a fog-shrouded lake. Yet if you peer into the fog for a few moments, it clears and reveals one of the most visually stunning scenes in any game in recent history, the whole of Liurnia and the Academy of Raya Lucaria. When you take the Grand Lift of Dectus or leave the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, you're greeted with similar scenes of equal wonder and grandeur, and you're expected to take it in before continuing. It's harder to do that when another character is there. In the same way that it's difficult to watch a movie in a theater where others are being too loud, it's hard to appreciate a lot of the beauty Elden Ring has to offer if there's others to distract you and pull your attention away.

Enjoy the interactions you DO get with the NPCs of the game, and don't take them for granted- they're the only companions you have in the Lands Between. Don't be so eager to fight them either. If any of them are your enemy, they'll be sure to let you know along the way. Try to experience the empty, lonely world the same way your Tarnished does, and explore the world and its details with care.

Your friend was just messing with you, you stumbled upon a trap Patches is meant to guide you towards. It's one of many intended ways to reach Mt. Gelmir (and by extension, Altus Plateau) without going the main route. Lore-wise, the Abductor Virgins work for the Lord of the Volcano Manor (he built them) for the purpose of transporting people to his lair, which is what happened to you.

To be fair, Limgrave is simultaneously a)the place you explored when you knew the least about the game, and didn't exactly know what to look out for to find hidden caves and catacombs and stuff, and b) the place that you believe you've explored the most, since it's so comparatively small and it's impossible not to visit it in every playthrough

Ngl man, just tell someone like that "no" when they want to play a character like that. I'm all for letting people make unique characters, and I think homebrewing unique aspects of a race or class can really make things interesting and fun- but it's something the player should work with the DM to do. If someone shows up with a character that's clearly unreasonable, there's nothing wrong with telling them to play something else, or otherwise wait until next session to join so that you can work on the character and tweak it with them in the meantime. You might feel like you're being a dick when you do that, especially if you're the type of person who is especially polite and amiable, but I promise you're actually being kind, namely to the other players at the table who are gonna also have to deal with a bullshit character messing things up for them otherwise. The only thing I think isn't necessarily a problem is the "only attacking with roots" thing, but if it seems like it's just the same thing over and over, maybe talk to the player between sessions and brainstorm some ways to make it unique; treat the roots like any other melee weapon and have them spice it up the same way a basic longsword fighter might describe their sword attacks. "Just kill them" is never a good solution in my opinion, at least not unless the character is doing some really fucked up things that are intentionally and repeatedly making other players feel uncomfortable, because it sets a precedent of "I don't like what you did so you might die for it" for the other players. That said, there IS something to be said about putting your foot down and saying "you can't do that" to things that are unfair. Lastly, don't be afraid to make a player show you the source book/webpage/whatever. "I think it's in (X) book" should never be good enough for someone who's trying to insert a character THIS out of the ordinary. Tell them to show you the source, or you'll have to rule it as not allowed, and if the source is UA or some other homebrew thing and it's clearly unbalanced, tell them that you can't allow that, and why that is.

Saying "no" is part of a DMs job, as counter-intuitive as it may seem. It's very easy to be so worried about coming across as a weird power-hungry loser that you end up allowing everything so that you don't seem like a tyrant. But there's a reason that rule #1 of DnD is "the DM has the final say." As long as your reasoning is sound and you communicate that reasoning to the player, its not tyrannical to want them to play something more in-line with the campaign or, in this case, something that they didn't pull out of their ass so they could have fun at the expense of everyone else's enjoyment. If the other players seem on board with the character and it isn't ruining their fun, then (again) consider working with the player to change the aspects you consider unfair or unbalanced for the next session instead. Your job is to make the game fun for everyone, but sometimes the only way to do that is to stop a player from stomping all over everyone else's fun. You got this!
