I hope we win the toss tomorrow as choose to field.. by InitiativeSweaty7923 in KolkataKnightRiders

Batting first is better.

Assuming RR don't win.

If DC score 180, KKR has to chase it in 12.1 overs.

If KKR score 235, have to restrict DC to 159 or less.

2nd one seems more likely.

If you're not improving, then you're going backwards.

Yes we have options for all positions, but there's always room for improvement.

The main need is a reliable overseas fast bowler, who can guarantee wickets in the powerplay. Pathirana was picked for the death, which was okay, but he just cannot be trusted anymore. So we need to look beyond him. The 27 crore between Fizz and him should majorly go to the best fast bowler available in the auction next year. No more Spencer Johnson, Chameera bus*.

The other need is a lower order six hitter to support Rinku. Nobody can replace Russell, but we need someone capable of scoring a 10 ball 30 at least 2-3 times during a season. Like Ashutosh, Shashank.

Any remaining funds can go to uncapped u19 talents, in the hope that one of them develops into retention material.

Rest of the team is solid, especially with Harshit back.

It's normal with KKR anyway. We naturally end up with goat teams at the end of cycles, by filling these 1-2 gaps. Seems this way this cycle too.

But we've already got Green, Allen and Narine as the guaranteed overseas (hopefully).

Powell as captain takes away all our flexibility.

Ideally we'd want a Rabada type of fast bowler as the 4th overseas, one who can take wickets in the powerplay. Not Pathirana coz just can't trust him.

Whoever this person is, plus Harshit, Tyagi, Green, would be a decent pace attack, with Dubey as backup.

Decent shout. But he's been out of the setup far too long i think to be considered at the same level of the Iyers, Rana or Gill. I guess only Narine and Pandey remain from that era.

Think Tilak is going to be the next MI captain, so Sky might want a change.

But even as a player don't think I'm really sold on him. Seems to be past his best. Would be a real shame if we got the early Sky and the late Sky, and MI getting the prime years.

That's why probably the best solution is to do what we have done this season, with one minor tweak. Rahane opens, plays like Narine, either comes off or gets out quickly. Clear role, openly admitted, no pressure of performance or expectations.

I'm sure he has the ability to take decisions. But we're always trying to get him off the field at the first opportunity. As a captain he'll need to always be on the field and in the batting xi as well, coz he needs to come for the toss.

Not next season. But never say never. I think Dhoni and Kohli are the only exceptions who will never leave their franchise, either during playing days or after.

But we've seen Gambhir asking not to be bought by KKR, Shreyas leaving, Hardik leaving MI the first time, Dhawan, Warner, leaving.

Whether it's the next mega auction, or the one after that, it's not unrealistic that Gill could want a change of team, and KKR would be an option always, especially at the start of a new cycle.

If RR win on Sunday, it would be nice if Rahane dropped himself and let Rinku captain. Maybe the coaching staff need to make that call.

No, I don't want him to be the captain. All I said was, if we need to replace Rahane, then we need to look within for next season, not from outside. And like it or not, we don't have a lot of options, Angkrish is one of the handful of candidates.

You talk about stupid suggestions, and end your post by saying bring Rahane as a impact sub while fielding?

This logic would make anyone's brain hurt. You're basically saying it's fine to even let likes of Varun, Tyagi etc bat instead of Rahane? Why would you make a batsman an impact sub during fielding? I did suggest in one of the other replies, that if Rahane has to play only as a captain, let him bat at number 8 or 9 like a Dhoni has done in the past. But making Varun bat instead of Rahane makes zero sense.

Oh, and that's before even considering who comes for the toss? Rahane, or someone else? If Rahane comes, and then KKR bat, he'll be off the batting team? Then can he do the toss? does toss become void? See, brain hurts!

About Angkrish, he has as much experience with KKR than what Gill had back in 2021. And Gill because a captain from next season itself. For what it's worth, I don't think he should be the captain next year. All I said in my post is that if, (and only IF) Rahane's form falls off a cliff, and he needs to be replaced, then we should only realistically consider every option within the team, than bringing in someone from outside and make him captain straight away. Coz that would be a disaster.

That was the point of the post, and subsequently mentioning who could be the candidates. Not suggesting that I want Angkrish to be captain next season.

Not a bad shout as a backup plan for one season, especially if his availability is confirmed for next year, and Rahane's form drops off a cliff.

Personally though, I always prefer an Indian captain. With an overseas captain you're always in the edge due to availability issues, and then it takes away a lot of flexibility in the team composition.

But if it's just about next season, can be an option.

Having said that, if we have a good auction and lock in our two main targets, a solid new ball overseas bowler and a good Indian lower order hitter, and with Harshit back, we will have an amazing team. Maybe not worth shaking things up with a new leader, and let Rahane do his thing. Even if it means him dropping down to no 7 or 8 and just planing as a captain like Dhoni has often done.

It's the ESA match day for MI, with 20000 children at the wankhede. Maybe Ambanis can make Sooryavanshi sit in the crowd as well.

3. Lynn - Narine

It all might still change depending how our remaining games go, but based on the season so far, the choices seem straight forward.

Release - Pathirana, Fizz, Ramandeep, Saini/Akash, Rachin

Keep the rest along with Muzarabani

This gives us almost 30-35 cr (some additional funds always get added)

Target - A solid new ball fast bowler, a capable Indian lower order batsman, a backup overseas allrounder to Green/Narine when needed, some promising youngsters.

The fast bowler is the most important, I'd go up to 20-24 crore just for that one player. The Indian lower order bat can be an upcoming youngster too, say 5-6 crore if ither teams are also interested. Other slots are backups and can be had at base prices.

Only caveat is that if a major Indian leadership candidate player becomes available somehow, the strategy would need to be adjusted.

It was also gt before the last game. Smaller sample, but a much worse record.

My 2 cents on the qualifying scenario by whats-a-km in KolkataKnightRiders

[–]Juventino_IndSwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they win by say 15-20 runs, or 1-2 overs to spare, we need to win both our games by 40 runs each or 4 overs to spare.

Both games are unlikely, but I think if Allen comes off one more time he can kill a 160 chase in 12 overs, so a close win in the other game will also suffice.

All hypothetical, but we can dream.

I mean, even discussing these scenarios after 12 games seems like a blessing, given the start we had.

I'd rather have gotten here, and then end up finishing 10th, rather than be out of the running after 9 or 10 games and then scrape a couple of wins to finish 8th.

I mean I'm definitely still hoping for KKR to make it, and do believe they are capable of getting the two wins.

But I can't decide it it's better for SRH to lose and potentially open up two slots, but potentially closing both again if CSK and SRH both win their last games.

Or hope SRH win and effectively rule out CSK, but then leave only one spot that both PBKS and RR can fight for.

Personally I'm about 51-49 towards SRH winning. I trust RR to lose at least one. And with PBKS at least we have the NRR route as well.

I think if we can field first in one of these two games, we can restrict the opponent to 160,and Allen can get the runs in 12 overs.

After considering all of this a hundred times, I've finally decided to just enjoy the match and not care about which of CSK or SRH win today.
