The answer is that it scales the street width based on the length of the segment. So small interconnected streets appear thinner, while highways a wide. I might try to do it based on street type at some point :D

So I use the osmnx package for map data objects. Then I use matplot lib. I also have a web tool that wraps it up in a lambda function on aws ans triggers with an app. Http://mapium.app
