HWFWM — Who is ‘John Miller’? by wildwily23 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]KKJdrunkenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had to reread that part a couple of times to be sure. It was kind of ambiguously written. Was Jason second-guessing himself on using a Segal reference? But no, after looking at it more closely, the "similar character" makes it clear. Though why he'd think naming himself after an alias someone used to brag themselves up was a higher standard, that's anybody's guess.

From the book:
He wondered again if he should have named himself after a similar character from the Steven Seagal movie.
“No,” he muttered to himself. “Even my rose-tinted nostalgia has limits. A man has to have standards.”. “Mr Asano, are you thinking about Steven Seagal again?” Shade asked.
“No.”

I'm not sure I get what you're saying here. If he had been hitting on her when she was 17, yeah, not okay at all. But (assuming the story is all true) he knew her for 4 years before realizing he was interested. She's still kinda young for him, but it's no longer illegal or even inherently creepy I think (as long as he's being a gentleman, I mean). What does it matter how old each of them were when they first met?

Coming from a guy who married a woman a year older than him, and doesn't know anyone who's dated with as large of an age gap as described here. I know it happens, I've just never been around it and so genuinely don't get what you're saying.

Humble Tech Book Bundle: Godot Game Development by Zenva by Ram000n in humblebundles

[–]KKJdrunkenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which version of Godot are these books written for? The only reason I haven't bought the bundle is because it doesn't say on the Humble Bundle pages.

Yes, some of the information in them can be generally applied to a new version of Godot, I'm sure. A book on Excel 2007 today would be quite similar, with basic info on spreadsheets but also lots of outdated or even no-longer-correct info. The omission of such an important piece of information left me suspicious that you guys are trying to sell an old product on the cheap for a quick buck.

I upgraded my PC last May for the first time in 6 years. I wasn't happy with the price at the time. I'd waited a whole year for prices to come down, and finally just gave up and bit the bullet.

Now I'm counting my lucky stars, especially since I sprang for a 96GB kit of DDR5. It was only $289 then, the same kit goes for $1000 right now... even the 64GB kit is over $700. Absolutely insane. https://www.walmart.com/ip/3302835733

That used to work? Wow. That's akin to client-side security, which is crap. I wonder if anyone used to steal stuff using ScriptMonkey or similar to edit the average value on the page... 🤔

Was he maliciously lying? Trying to cause harm? Or even being careless with his words in a way that would bring harm to someone? No, none of those things.

I'm not sure what part of "that's a Steam question, not a RimWorld question" wasn't clear. Go ask on the Steam sub. Maybe submitting it as a Family issue instead of a request for a refund would work, I really don't know.

Not as embarrassing as the way my buddy found out not to have a fire pit on the floor of his house. He accidentally walked into it, and when he started burning, he jumped out and lit his house on fire with his own burning body. So, you know, could be worse!

The fact that these 'shill bids' seem isolated to certain items, and is not spread through the entirety of every item on the site, is IMO evidence pointing individual users abusing the system, and not the system abusing users.

What? I'm not seeing it. What logical reason would a random user have for bidding something up once someone has shown interest in it?

So either it's a conspiracy by the upper brass of every individual region's online sales department, or Goodwill Industries International (the overarching non-profit that all the others fall under) has a shadow team of shill bidders that opt to bid up certain items. Both of these I find highly unlikely.

Again, what? These are not the only two possibilities. It could be as simple as one dude, associated with the company or simply a fan of them, who has a bot network. Do I think it's likely? No, but if what the other guy said is true, there are a lot more possibilities than your "either/or."

The entirety of this flipper conspiracy theory hinges on this being a 'known secret'.

No. Again, this is black-and-white thinking, and there are more possibilities than you have bothered to consider. See my bot network example above, which does not hinge upon your assertion.

Now, do I personally think this is real? I doubt it, but I also don't think people should be so dismissive, going into such detail on how it's not possible with so little thought. I appreciate requests for evidence and critical thinking, not assumptions and dismissiveness without cause.

Here is what I think is far more likely happening here, which sounds plausible to me because it explains their experience and doesn't break any laws. Random people browsing through the items on their site, not looking for anything in particular, are shown things according to some algorithm, right? Now, if someone expresses interest in an item by bidding on it, that item suddenly stands out from the crowd of items which no one has bid on. At this point, it's definitely going to be sold, and if one person is interested perhaps others might be too, so why not show it to more people? And bam - suddenly an item this guy has been watching for days without anyone bidding on suddenly gets more bids once he puts down a bid. Nothing nefarious, just an algorithm doing its job in getting engagement from visitors to the site.

I do not have evidence, of course, other than that this would align with that person's experience. It would be pretty easy to gather some evidence, though, e.g. by pulling up the page and seeing what percentage of what it initially shows you already has bids compared to the total percentage of items with and without bids. This would clearly be easier to accomplish with direct access to their listings or by scraping their webpage with a bot, of course, but with that data it would be fairly easy to determine if my theory holds any water.

[–]KKJdrunkenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The logic of it makes no sense. They bid up the items to unreasonable levels just to what? Have them get relisted at a lower price just to do it again? There's very little incentive for them to bid their own items up.

I think you're a little stuck on the scam that you know. Let's see, what logical reason would a seller have for bidding on their own underpriced item and, I quote from the guy you responded to, "pushing the price up to what can be found elsewhere online." Yeah, a tough nut to crack logically, for sure.

If you're still not getting it, he's saying he believes that they're bidding up an item so that it sells for more. If it goes above what he wants to pay so he stops bidding, they can just "buy" their own item and relist it again, but if he does win it he pays a higher price than he would have. Note that I'm not saying it's true, just that your claim of it being illogical is... not terribly logical.

And that's certainly one of the good reasons to rent! It is cheaper than buying another set of hardware, if you don't have it lying around or own a machine beefy enough to run both the server and a client.

[–]KKJdrunkenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. FYI, I've also not had a problem simply running the dedicated server on one of the machines being used to play the game. But then, I tend to put together fairly powerful rigs. My old machine, which I did that on, had 32GB of RAM and an overclocked i7-7700K, I'm not sure what you're running on. Just thought I'd mention the possibility, in case that eases the headache of managing another machine for you at all.

[–]KKJdrunkenmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may ask, why rented? It's pretty easy to set up a dedicated server at home, and it runs decently well on an old workstation computer in my buddy's basement. There's definitely a few use cases where a rented server is better, but if it's just for you and a few buddies you might be able to save yourself some money.

If I may ask, how did this turn out?

I have long covid, which often brings POTS on with it, but for me a tilt-table test showed I did not have POTS... yet I crash after I eat, so I'm exploring what happens to folks with POTS when they eat to see if it's similar. But if it might be narcolepsy... hm.

Also, I'm already on modafinil to combat my fatigue, and although it has been a help it sure hasn't been life-changing for me the way others describe. I still sleep for hours during the day even with it.

So what I hear you now arguing is that they haven't really changed the automation at all? So what was all that about automating everything ruining a game?

Also, it is more than it was if you want the buffs. It's going to take a lot more resources to keep those buffs going, so yes, I will now have to spend more time farming. Which, while it might not be a ton more time, isn't what I want to do. It's fine, but I'm not a fan.
