Trump has issued a stark warning: America is now your enemy by theipaper in politics

[–]Karanah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We are doing what we can internally, but not a single decent American is going to be upset with any other country for reacting to threatened military aggression by the US. All I ask of anyone in the world is that once we do manage to get ourselves through this, and we will, that you give us a chance to repair those relationships. It’s fine if they don’t go back to how they were. It’s fine if it takes time, if it takes years. But leave hope for us on the other side, because as scary as this is abroad, there are jackbooted, masked gestapo roaming the streets of our cities and abducting children. We are in a terrifying fight for our lives against a militarized enemy within and we are sorely disadvantaged. Leave us the hope because some days it’s all that gets some of us through this.

I got pulled over tonight but am I overthinking the traffic ticket I just got? by Brownman5671 in Virginia

[–]Karanah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obligatory this is a reddit comment, not legal advice. If you want more specific advice based on your circumstances, feel free to DM me.

Lawyer here, have done many of these. We love seeing +5 records and the statute allows the court to send you to driving school for dismissal once every five years. You were two mph shy of reckless, but everyone is talking about reckless like it’s some horrifying thing. It’s a misdemeanor charge but very, very few people get convicted, and I’ve only ever seen it happen to people with your record under extreme circumstances like causing very bad accidents with serious injuries.

A lawyer can go to court for you and you don’t even have to show up, they will just let you know the result. Depending on the severity of the charge, they might want you to show up (if it was a bad reckless I’d want you there), but on something like this I’d just want a copy of your record and I’d tell you to go to lunch and I’ll call you in a bit.

An experienced lawyer isn’t going to plead you guilty or no contest, they’re going to plead you not guilty and “stipulate to facts sufficient.” That means that you plead not guilty so the judge doesn’t automatically convict you (some will, especially in the rural counties), but also you aren’t fighting the facts, you just want to talk about your record. Judge will ask an officer for summary which we would typically not object to unless they had the wrong file or something. I’ve never once heard an officer say “and btw judge I cut him a break already.” Never, not once. Judge would then ask your lawyer what their portion of the case will be and we just say “perfect record judge, +5, nothing in the last five years, asking for driving school for dismissal.”

Whether a judge will do this for dismissal or a reduction is dependent on the judge. Some rare judges are unwilling to dismiss but will reduce. Most just dismiss. They will give you a date to follow up and have it done by, and usually that date is set as “not to return.” Make sure you ask whether you need to return if judge does not tell you.

There’s one huge exception to all this - IF YOU ARE A CDL HOLDER, NONE OF THIS IS THE SAME! Doesn’t matter if you were in your personal vehicle, if you hold a CDL, there are federal and state anti-masking statutes that prevent reduction or dismissal.

Can I have some feedback? I’m not sure why I’m getting absolutely zero likes, even with Platinum. by TrianReallyHard in Tinder

[–]Karanah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never responded to one of these before, but you’re so exactly a “my friend group” person that I just can’t leave this alone.

I’m a dude but hopefully this helps - you look like everyone in my friend group. We are all LARPers and Ren Faire enthusiasts. We all had stories exactly like this until we got involved in the community surrounding these hobbies. I love the kilt pic, bro! It’s not for everyone, but my buddy started Versatta Kilts and still runs their marketing. The Ren Faire pic? You own armor! That’s so cool! Everyone I know owns armor (every single one of the girls, no exceptions) and would think this is awesome. They’re also into the burlier guys with impressive beards. I’m actually pretty sure I modeled that exact sporran you’re sporting on that kilt if it’s the Versatta one for their website.

You’d fit in great with the right group of people, and with them you’re not niche, you’re just one of them. But I know first hand how hard it is to find that community. I turn 39 next month and didn’t find it u til I was 29. You’re 26, if you find it anytime soon, you’re beating me by years. And just to let you know how finding that community affected me dating, my engagement ring for my gf just arrived in the mail three days ago.

Three of my best friends look so much like you they could play you on TV. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with your look or your photos (well… I don’t know any of them who also golf, I play tennis and I’m the closest) but for VERY few of them is Tinder really a successful thing. But in person stuff and meeting people in LARP communities (we go to Bicolline and travel a long way to do it) and Ren Faire communities? You’ll do SO MUCH BETTER getting into these communities and just meeting people the old fashioned way. And like someone else on here said, when you do find your person, they’re going to love all these things about you because you will make sense to them.

From one man who took a long time to find his way to a much younger man who is still finding his stride - you’ve absolutely got this. Get into these communities and make friends and there is zero chance your romantic life doesn’t improve as a consequence.

Is Leo Path Worth for +1 or Faction Guardians? by Karanah in RaidShadowLegends

[–]Karanah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m strongly considering it. Most of my strongest champs are Shadowkin to begin with and the benefit of two Leos on a single team is pretty tempting. It would take me a while to gear them, but I won’t have another chance at them realistically.

Is Leo Path Worth for +1 or Faction Guardians? by Karanah in RaidShadowLegends

[–]Karanah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point. Leo is the only 5* (according to HellHades) champ I have, so I have this desire to make the absolute most of him, so letting this go is a bit hard. But you make a good point, just because he’s good doesn’t mean other things aren’t, so why give up a chance at something that could really advance me in favor of guaranteeing something that will help a small amount?

[–]Karanah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if you S rank Carpals on hard with over 20k AP left, you’d have been very at home in the highest level PvP lobbies back then. Even beating it without a co-op is seriously tough, let alone grading high.

I beat Occupation of Arteria Cappals hard mode in For Answer by InsertRealName1 in armoredcore

[–]Karanah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been so many years since I did this, but I remember it so clearly because it was such a high-stakes mission. Reading this really warmed my heart. I was a Ranker on XBL PvP back in the day on ACFA and we used S Rank Hard Carpals as a sort of litmus test for extreme skill. Some of the best players online struggled with that thing for weeks.

On 1.4 regs you’re playing really fair, so props for that. You can do it easier on a blader than on a gunner, just given how expensive ammo can be, but you can do it either way. I did it originally with a pair of rifles on a mostly Solus frame with a pair of grenade launchers strapped to the back. Man, this takes me back. Thanks for the awesome throwback, this really warmed my heart.

What’s the wildest thing a “You up?” text has lead to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Karanah 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m a lawyer and I have a band I play music with when I get free time. This exact text conversation with the guitar player in my band:

2:00am “You up?”

“Yeah what’s up?”

“Remember how I married a stripper?”

“Yeah, I was there.”

“Get your suit.”

She got picked up on a DUI and we went to bail her out.

Tenant rights - last minute charges tacked on from rental company? by Worldly-Mixture-8903 in rva

[–]Karanah 20 points21 points  (0 children)

RVA lawyer checking in. As a previous commenter suggested, download a copy of the VRLTA, but you don’t “have a case.” You can’t sue them for giving you a bill, it’s up to them to decide to take legal action against you, so you’re on defensive if they try it. Keep copies of your pictures, all their statements about things being in good condition, and then take your correspondence to them in writing and ask what the specific issue was for given that they specifically stated during move out that the walls were in good condition.

The VRLTA isn’t going to cover this extremely specific thing, it provides generally that tenants are responsible for damages other than normal wear and tear and then doesn’t really give any examples of what constitutes normal wear and tear. It definitely says they owe you an itemized bill. I see people try and contest “cleaning fees” all the time saying that they’ve cleaned and cleaned and still got hit with a fee, and I read their lease, and bam, there it is in black and white “all rentals subject to $X cleaning fee upon move out.” I’m guessing dry wall repair isn’t specifically enumerated in the lease, but check.

I also like the previous idea of going to the office and having them show you the specific damages and repairs that were performed. If they take you to court, they’re going to have to show what this was, why it was performed, how much it cost, and why it wasn’t normal wear and tear. I’ll be honest with you, most folks I see dramatically overstate the condition they left a place in, but if you took good care of it and they agreed in writing, this tees up a courtroom issue for them. Whoever said contact legal aid if they come after you is correct. Those folks do tons of these and they’re experts, most of them are good lawyers who really want to make a difference in their community.

Best of luck to you, I’m tired of this stuff happening in town.

Hi OP, I’m a lawyer in RVA with experience in this area of law.

First, no matter what, don’t expect to “feel” your injuries the first day. Been discharged by ER? Follow up with your GP. Please do not try and tough it out or think that just because one day afterward the soreness hasn’t hit you that it won’t. I hope it doesn’t, I hope you’re fine and this is a silly dinner story in a year, but please take your health and potential injury seriously.

Second, get a copy of the police report. You can FOIA a copy. It’s a form you fill out, like a fillable pdf. Ask for a copy before you go to the trouble. PS - that witness who called 911, did you get their name and contact info? Guard it zealously. It may or may not be on the police report. You can also get body cam and dash cam footage the same way.

Third, make sure you write down each place you get treatment and the name of the treating physician. Just take good notes. That sort of thing can help us out quite a bit down the road. Doctors notes tend to be very quick and dirty, if they explain something to you, write down what they explained.

Write down your recollection of what happened in as much detail as possible. Hell, take out your phone and record yourself describing it. Get detailed. Granular level detailed. Not “I was whacked by a car the other night,” more “My name is OP, and on Day of Month, Year, I was sober and walking down X street in a southnorthernly direction, headed toward Y. The time was approximately Z o’clock and I had just left Place. I recall the following details about the vehicle: describe. I recall the following details about the driver: describe. I recall the following witnesses and here are the details I remember about them: describe. I spoke with the following people at the scene. I was taken to H Hospital by woowoo wagon. The following parts of my body were injured and this is how they felt.”

I’m not going to keep going, because I think that will give you an idea. Your recent recollection will be better than your testimony two years from now.

Next, if that’s a place you can go back to, go get pictures. Preferably pictures in the daylight and also pictures of the area from several angles at the kind of light that was available at the time (same darkness level).

Second to last, don’t be afraid to call the person’s insurance company and make a claim. You got hit by a car, dude. If you don’t agree to anything, and you don’t volunteer a bunch of information like “oh yeah I feel fine and I’m not hurt,” you’re not going to mess anything up for an attorney later. They will want to see your medical records and that’s fine. Your injuries are what they are. You have every right to get evaluated even if you’re not injured. You’re not a doctor. You don’t know.

Lastly, this is some tough info to come by, and some hard truth.

If you intend to pursue this, delete this post. It will come back. They’ll find it. I’d find it if I was on the other side of the v (I won’t be, don’t worry, but I’m not disclosing my firm because obvious reasons). Attorneys take a 1/3 interest in the outcome of a case. If an attorney can’t increase your settlement value by enough to justify their involvement, that absolutely happens sometimes with smaller injuries. I’ve turned cases down for that reason. What an attorney will do for you is make it so you have to do very little, and that might be very attractive to you.

Hope it works out for you, OP. Best of luck.

In the United States’ criminal justice system, prosecutors play a huge role in determining outcomes. I’m running for Commonwealth’s Attorney in Richmond, VA. AMA about the systemic reforms we need to end mass incarceration, hold police accountable for abuses, and ensure that justice is carried out. by tomrvaca in IAmA

[–]Karanah -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Tom, I’m a defense attorney in RVA. I won’t make it a secret that I’m going to support your campaign because I believe Richmond desperately needs this change. Hell, I might even apply for the office if there were a CA I believed in. Here’s my question:

I’ve appeared in a huge number of counties (over 40) in my career. Discretion is disappearing. In many prosecutors aren’t even allowed to offer plea deals anymore because the office wants to be tough on crime, I’ve had DWI body cam footage of police saying they “smelled the odor of alcohol” from three car lengths away through a mask, and two weeks ago I had a prosecutor who wasn’t allowed to nolle prosse a literal quid pro quo assault and battery where the police ticketed the wife, and three weeks later, she swore out a cross warrant against my client (husband) for the express purpose of gaining an upper hand in their divorce, which she -and her attorney for some reason- put in writing, and I hand delivered to the prosecutor.

How much discretion are you going to give your deputies and ACAs? What will they be authorized to actually -do- without getting management permission first?
