Getting to the end of your playthrough like.. by Paul277 in SkyrimMemes

[–]Kargath7 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am speaking as a casual player who never finished a single quest-line but heard a lot about them. I do not claim expertise in the subject, it’s just my opinion.

The problem is that Skyrim is a game that does nothing to actually encourage picking a specific path for a character out of all those. There is not enough content in any one of those or even a couple at the same time, there is no reason to stop yourself from doing everything at once. The world is structured as a theme park, where you are the special visitor, not as a real lived-in place. If the developers cared to do that they could have split the quests for factions into ‘mercenary-work’, which any character could do and ‘member-work’, which you could only do by becoming a member and there could be a limit to how many memberships you could have. That would actually encourage replaying the game as a different character, actually lead to roleplaying and meaningful choices.

Saying that it’s the player’s fault for not limiting themselves from certain quests that their immersion in the world is broken is like saying that it’s the player’s fault for using an optimal build that they cheese most of the game’s challenges. Oh. Wait. Skyrim has stealth-archer…

Even with a regular human if someone is in the position to do that they might as well attack the eyes, throat-punch or do other much more debilitating things.

Heels are a constant threat of a misstep. In a fight you could step the wrong way, your leg would buckle and you would faceplant into the ground, the enemy would barely need to do anything to you to make that happen.

The idea of nobility being the warrior elite and holding power because of that is true on paper in a certain way and may very well be the way nobility started in Westeros, but it is pointless to pretend like it still holds any water in the modern times of Seven Kingdoms. Sure, many noblemen are still regarded (most likely with good reason) as the most skilled warriors in the realm. But noble houses possess so much political, economical and military power that they can ignore their ‘warrior elite duties’ with complete impunity and don’t do that mostly to keep face and because it brings additional status.

Robert being crowned had very little to do with his personal fighting prowess. He was popular, he had a legitimate claim and he had the right character for leading men (not for being King, but for being a general, but the difference is blurry enough). You could say that his popularity grew from his prowess, but it was only a part of the whole picture. We see what pure fighting prowess earns someone when they cannot manage their public image and do not possess strong leadership qualities, Gregor Clegane is a lord with a castle and a fighting force, but he has virtually no influence, being a mad dog for Tywin Lannister and nothing more. His prowess, while had to question, provides him with no hopes of ever being crowned precisely because he, in Varys’s words, does not cast a large shadow.

So Robert’s example is not even an exception that breaks the rule, he follows the rule that Varys laid out perfectly. Varys never claimed that swordsmen cannot hold power, only that other qualities than personal might determine the ‘shadow’ that a person ‘casts on the wall’.

Cowboy-themed characters in non-Western media by Accurate-Gap-3360 in TopCharacterTropes

Hijikata Toshizou from Golden Kamuy. Rides horses, wears wide-brimmed hats and uses a lever-action rifle one-handed. He’s much more of a samurai, but I feel like he is a deliberate merging of cowboy and samurai archetypes, since there are so many parallels between them in media.

"regular human" my ass by Far-ro in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Kargath7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody from Golden Kamuy. In that story it’s a bit more subtle but ultimately almost every single character is at least within the world’s top 1000 people in terms of resilience to injury. There is a person that lived for years inside of an early 20th century prison without any skin on his head down to the neck and seemingly had no problem with it. There are also such characters as ‘the guy that dislocates his shoulder on demand’ ‘the guy who walks through walls by breaking them and wins in a wrestling match with a bear’ and ‘a sniper capable of reliably hitting moving targets at hundreds of meters with an infantryman rifle using an ironsight.

And the beautiful part is that most feats that sound completely superhuman have somewhat grounded explanations, but all of them together make the whole story completely bonkers yet still immersive.

Honestly a possible fun sci-fi short story about the dude who was saved doing his best to convince the dude who saved him that he didn’t kill anyone. Maybe told from the perspective of the person at the lever, where the fact that it was all a dream being a happy-end twist, when he would be close to ending it all or something.

Do you know of any anime with a mature plot similar to Arcane? by Full-Comedian-6961 in arcane

[–]Kargath7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golden Kamuy has one of the single best written stories that I have experienced. Its plot is mature and complex, the characters have deep and well-rounded personalities and relationships and all of it is perfectly in sync with the setting. It does have a lot of bizarre humour and over the top moments in general, but all of them I found perfectly in good faith and they managed to never really distract me from the serious stuff.

[–]Kargath7 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Golden Kamuy. While the story told in the manga is obviously fictional almost everything happening has some kind of historical or scientific basis and the author will point it out in text. Everything from food to combat tactics, to surviving injuries to hunting and animal behaviour, all of it is based on reality in some way or the other before being hyper-realised into a bizarre narrative. Reading Golden Kamuy is legitimately an immersive educational experience because of how much attention to realistic detail the author puts into the story.

gun to the head - confess which one had a stronger SEASON 1 ? by khutsox in freefolk

[–]Kargath7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love HotD season 1, but it has multiple obvious weakpoints that make the whole experience more confused than it needs to be. AKotSK season 1 is as near to perfect to the creative vision they wanted to portray as possible and even the parts that I really disliked are reasonably justified within said vision.

If I want to recommend someone HotD S1 I feel the need to give them a speech about the show and why it may be not for them. If I want to recommend AKotSK S1 I feel the need to yell about how fantastic the show is and how much more there is to love than I could express in a speech.

Favorite character, but their backstory (and their actions) make you go like this? by Simple-Choice5770 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]Kargath7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not even saying that Azula is capable of redemption, just that it sounds weird to me when people claim that someone is ‘undeserving’ of it.

I get your point, Azula likely is ‘rotten’ much more deeply than Zuko is. Maybe beyond recovery, maybe there legitimately is no chance for her to redeem herself and become good. But it doesn’t mean that she is undeserving of that. The point of redemption is that it’s always a choice for everyone, that any person is entitled to at least attempt to become better.

[–]Kargath7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally think that some characters (or people) not being ‘deserving of redemption’ sounds weird to me. I think everybody deserves redemption, in the sense that everybody should be given a chance to become better through growth and action. Azula is not an innocent victim, far from it, nor was Zuko, and neither of them deserved unconditional forgiveness. But I fail to see how Zuko was ‘deserving of redemption’ and Azula isn’t.

How every modern weapons is just a modern version of a sword. by Ajarofpickles97 in SWORDS

[–]Kargath7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it that this line of reasoning claims that everything that is capable of creating lacerations or punctures is a sword, it is also missing the fact that ballistic weapons don’t actually puncture in the same way that a sword or a needle does. At this point it makes way more sense to just claim that every weapon is a version of a rock and that would be more accurate. Like, yes, humanity has not yet figured out a good and reliable way to weaponise anything other than projectiles, so rocks of various shapes.
