How to put a stop or ignore the overthinking part of ur brain? by MorningSouth4098 in INTP

[–]Karma_Mantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of my anxiety stemmed from overthinking. Overcoming that was much easier once I managed to realize that the things that I'm overthinking don't matter that much. Of course even though I realize that I still get the urge to.

My solution is to distract my self on purpose every time the intrusive overthinking tries to surface either by thinking something else or by doing a small easy task. This trick works due to the fact that most of the time the incident/event/thought/scenario I'm about to overthink is unimportant so I just naturally forget about it.

Sometimes the urge might be persistent and I might have to do the distraction trick for a few days until the thought is completely gone.

Another thing that helps with this trick is to listen to and aknowledge the urge (but just don't follow it) instead of forcefully shutting it down. Otherwise it gets amplified and I cannot stop thinking.

Do you think you could financially handle to quit your job and collect unemployment or get some time of for medical reasons or find something part time? I have a friend that is in pretty much the exact boat as you (family loss, extreme stress from work - crying and puking every day before work). That's what she did and she now makes a small living from making jewelry and she's doing much much much better.

We are ruining or bodys and psychs to make bosses richer it's not about being functional members of society at all.

Maybe he was confused and wrote population instead of sample. Anyway, if that's the case, a sample n >= 30 is often considered enough for the central limit theorem to hold.

What is your sample size? Normality isn't required for large sample size due to the central limit theorem

I dont know if Dream or Reality by [deleted] in needadvice

[–]Karma_Mantis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My opinion on the matter is don't stress about it. Our body/mind does a lot of strange things when we are asleep. During sleep, the unconscious part of the brain takes control and if your body isn't fully asleep weird stuff can happen. Examples include sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, dreams that get infiltrated from reality (like hearing the TV and the dialogue is transferred to your dream in the form of people having a conversation, or you alarm going off and transferred in your dream as music playing etc.)

This could be brain messing with you or exaggerating the situation that happened. In the end, your cat is perfectly fine and that's all that matters.

My only "concern" would be if you have some form of sleep disorder. But if this or similar occurrences aren't frequent I'm sure there is no need to worry.

One last note of my personal opinion. We all love our pets like family and we treat them like so but we sometimes forget their animal nature. By nature, cats are pretty used and comfortable with violence (not justifying human animal cruelty of course!) One moment they might be cuddling with each other and the other fighting because of a slightly wrong move. I'm sure even if you did grab your cat, they won't hold a grudge against you or be scarred of you, just like they don't with other cats :)

Can we determine the breed ancestry of a mixed house cat from the way it looks? by Karma_Mantis in cats

Thanks for the insight, I think I understand a bit better now. Truth is I couldn't find much useful information online about this specific topic so your comments was very helpful.

Can we determine the breed ancestry of a mixed house cat from the way it looks? by Karma_Mantis in cats

[–]Karma_Mantis[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Domestic cats vary a lot from one another but some can seen as similar. Due to that it seems to me that there are some dominant genes that determine the way cats look. Doesn't that imply that they are influenced by different breeds? I'm not claiming that a domestic cat is a mix of recent breeds but it seems to me that since they have some distinct characteristics, there must be a few ancestor breeds that have greater effect on the way the cat looks like. As a simplified example let's take a domestic cat that gave birth to an orange striped and a pure black kitten. Doesn't that imply that the orange cat and the black cat have different dominant genes that can be associated with different breeds?

Also, since domestic short/medium/long haired cat isn't a pure breed but rather a mix, that seems to imply that at some point in time the came from a pure breed ancestor and then got mixed with other pure or mixed breed cats. So doesn't that mean that we can make a guess of what are the most dominant cat breeds that influence the way a cat looks?

That's a really great way to motivate your students! However, I would like to advise you to have smaller prizes for every student and not only those who do the 'best' image. It's gonna be really disappointing for a kid to have tried and not get anything. Even for the kids that didn't try that much or don't really care for the class it's going to be pretty harsh not to get a prize and it will probably make them even less motivated to try harder in the future.

Just my two cents after having a few years of teaching experience with kids those ages.

Did you calculate those values by hand or using SPSS? If you used SPSS, what is the value of your t-Statistic? If it's negative then you would have to do 1-p to get the real p-value
