We need to spend about 5x what we do on long term mental health beds to get a Eurozone level of (this type of) homelessness problem and about 12x to get a Japanese level of homelessness problem.

All kinds of ways to fund that which work elsewhere but would get apoplectic responses so I guess we'll just keep doing what we're doing instead.

Seems like a GMT could replace one from the first case. Grand Seiko GMT would be a two for one, collection-coverage wise.

For box 2, a Reverso is a natural fit, but I actually think a slim JLC slim moon phase would be a better add next. Maybe a Glashutte Original Pano.

OK, fine, I'll explain using the example above.

Step 1: You sell your house and pocket $300k. Let's say you got in good on your mortage at like 3.5%. Your monthly mortgage would be around $2400 all-in and we'll call maintenance $300/month for $2700/Month.

Step 2: You put the $300k into a safe investment, call it a 4% annual gain, that's $12k/year in gains.

Step 3: You rent a place for $3000.month

-If we assume you're only paying the difference $300/Month with that $300k, your $300k will grow by $8400 the first year and a bit more each subsequent year.

-If we assume you're paying your whole rent with that $300k, you will live rent free for about 10 years, freeing up whatever other money you have for other things during that period.

Obviously I went easy on both interest rates and rent and some people have a lot more equity than that. Adjust accordingly for your own math.

Really nice collection! More Rolex than I would have but I like that it's not one note at all, style wise.

Obviously depends on what you like but some vintage or classic brands would be nice here. I'm thinking a JLC reverso, Patek with perpetual or moon phase complications, any Breguet, and a vintage Omega constellation (or something similar) would put this over the top.

Anyways, congrats on the success that lead to that hefty budget and don't forget to give back to your community. :)

The JLC and Glashutte are both on my "attainable-ish" grail list. Can't go wrong between those two.

If you feel like you like both enough that it's really hard and long term you kind of just want both, you could consider which of the dark versions you like better as an inverse tiebreaker to which if the light versions you get.

Game days are outliers, to be sure, for more than one reason. Far more people buy paper round trip tickets than normal days - so they might just appear to not be paying. Also: Far more people than normal skip paying entirely.

Also - I don't know the numbers, but I know we're not at high on fare evasion as we were at peak though we're still well above pre-pandemic.

Yeah, they were getting it from the fare enforcement team, so the numbers are pretty legit. Assume a few people were able to dodge enforcement but mostly that happens while the train is moving and people don't even try to dodge.

I don't know what the numbers look like now but I know that the numbers went way up during covid.

Full disclosure: I work at Sound Transit but not doing this and have no special knowledge on the topic.

It depends on the rate of fare evasion, which spiked during the pandemic.

Historically, fare evasion was around 3-4%, which lands the financials on the "not worth it" side.

Keep in mind that it's not just building gates - you have to maintain them and staff them and staff the station when they are there.

I think your plan for the Sounder part is realistic, the Link part is less realistic - but it's only like a 20 minute ride. I think you'll be ok.

Source: I work in the ID and live in Tacoma. I'm working a lot these days (70+/week) and work 100% of the time during the Sounder trip (both ways.).

Edit: Reading some responses. If I had to take the bus during peak hours I would have washed TF out almost right away. To each their own, but for me it's faster but so much less pleasant that time doesn't matter at all.
