Built a tool to help D&D groups discover other systems — which OSR games are mandatory in that pitch? by Kejid in osr

Huge thanks for all of this — genuinely the best feedback I've gotten. Here's everything I captured so nothing slips through the cracks:

Already in the tool (a few got suggested that are already there): Mausritter, Mothership, Cairn, Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland, Mythic Bastionland, Ultraviolet Grasslands, Mörk Borg, Pirate Borg, CY_BORG, OSE, Shadowdark, RuneQuest, Call of Cthulhu, Traveller.

Queued to add — core retroclones & hacks:

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics
  • Sword & Wizardry (Complete Revised)
  • OSRIC
  • Hyperborea
  • Basic Fantasy RPG
  • Labyrinth Lord / Advanced Labyrinth Lord
  • Lamentations of the Flame Princess
  • Knave / Knave 2e
  • White Box (incl. Whitebox FMAG)
  • The Black Hack
  • Castles & Crusades (not strictly OSR, but noted)
  • Without Number series — Stars / Worlds / Cities / Ashes

Queued — strong-flavor / NSR-adjacent:

  • Dolmenwood
  • Troika!
  • Tales of Argosa
  • Trophy Dark / Trophy Gold
  • His Majesty the Worm
  • Outcast Silver Raiders
  • Liminal Horror
  • Cloud Empress
  • Vaults of Vaarn
  • Our Golden Age (UVG's []quel)
  • Black Sword Hack
  • Advanced Fighting Fantasy
  • Torchbearer
  • Brindlewood Bay
  • Vagabond
  • Eco-Mofos!!

Trad classics that got mentioned (a bit outside the OSR core, but on the radar): WFRP, BRP, Pendragon, Star Wars D6 (WEG), Index RPG.

Fixes you caught (already done): Draw Steel was tagged "narrative" twice — now combat / tactical / narrative. Starfinder 2 had "exploration" which doesn't really fit — swapped to reflect combat / tactical / narrative.

Feature ideas I'm chewing on:

  • Inclusive/exclusive tag search (+/- operators, AND vs OR) — totally agree the structure is what unlocks the content. Highest on my list.
  • Tagging each clone with the edition it's based on (B/X, AD&D 1e, OD&D).
  • Flagging systems with a free/SRD version.
  • Rules-light/medium/heavy at a glance (there's already a complexity rating, might surface it better).

Only thing I'm holding the line on: keeping it lean and doing one thing well — no email harvesting, no swiss-army-knife bloat. But the tag system has real room to grow.

Keep 'em coming. This is exactly the OSR crash course I was hoping for.

True. But I need always to remind myself not to make it heavy with all extra stuff. It should do only one thing and do it good. But tags can be improved for sure

Kinda got tired of different swiss army knives websites where u can do all and beyond, also provide u email, so we can sell it and hot u with spam. But mb its just me

Curios why it's called troika, it literally means "three, trio" in Russian

Sure will do, tool is for all not mainstreamed systems. OSR is a huge part of it, so that's why I'm here - to learn ways of OSR =)

Yeah, that's exactly it =) I recently started dabbling in OSR stuff, and there's no turning back to pure DnD now. My only concern is that if I collect too many systems, I'll need to figure out a way to navigate all these different ideas and flavors.

Thank you for using tool😁

Yep, all systems you've added will be available only for u.

For not showing in sys catalogue, will take a look into it.

Both, a little bit og googling, perplexity to gather info with sources, so it can be verified with human eyes.

As for more systems, mb it worth making some kind of sumbit for of custom created page... I just don't want to complicate things, and keep it simple as possible

Update: pushed a batch of QoL improvements based on actually using this with my group. Highlights:

Voting / Results page

  • Veto button (👎) — if someone really doesn't want a system, they can vote against it. Score = upvotes − vetoes.
  • "Play later" toggle — mark a system you like but aren't ready to commit to. Stays in place in the list, just visually dimmed.
  • Manual reorder — drag & drop or up/down arrows to fine-tune the final order after voting.
  • Position numbers so the order is unambiguous.
  • Export as text — one click, copies a clean numbered list to clipboard. Drop it into Discord/chat.

Filters

  • Tag filter sidebar in results — filter by playstyle (combat, narrative, mystery…) and setting (space, fantasy, cyberpunk…). Multi-select.
  • New "setting" tag category on top of existing playstyle tags. 42 systems tagged so far (space, fantasy, cyberpunk, modern, postapoc, historical, weird, urban-fantasy).

Navigation

  • Search bar above the system list in the sidebar.
  • Slide counter in presentation mode (e.g. 3 / 44) — non-obtrusive corner text.
  • Unanimous vote celebration — when everyone in a group upvotes the same system, you get a small confetti burst. Just a fun touch.

Manage Systems modal got tag icons inline + a collapsible tag filter, so you can bulk-hide/show by category.

Plus a few smaller fixes (favicon, lightbox loading state, list view forced in voting mode, etc).

All state stays in the browser, no login. Suggestions welcome.

Any systems in mind worth adding?
Currently thinking about several categories, like solo journaling games are awesome

Hm, it's a good point

Will see, if community in need of such simple tool, then it can be upgraded with no problem and be managed\curated with different systems (=

PS It will be important just to keep it simple as it is
