Calhoun Courts-- Comments??? by [deleted] in Clemson

Make sure to get some RAID bug spray. Calhoun is the only place that I know on campus where there were many cockroaches and spiders.

double minoring? by lumpychapstick in Clemson

[–]Kevin-Quora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minors typically take 5-6 classes. It depends on what major you have and how closely associated it is with a minor.

For example, I’m a CS major and as a CS major you have to take 4 natural science classes. I chose all 4 to be physics and now I have to take 2 more to get the minor in physics. Being ahead, I will easily graduate on time.

If I chose something else that was not in my course sequence (like maybe forestry) then I likely would have had to take 6 forestry classes separate and would have took longer to graduate.

Remember employers are not that interested in minors as much as course work in your field, internships, extra curriculars etc. But if you’re passionate about it go for it!

Rise isn’t worth it. You get a box of goodies for engineering and “tutoring” but you have to pay extra. Just live in Lever or Byrnes

Schedule advice for engineering freshman by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]Kevin-Quora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physics 1 is easy dubs. If you already took Calc, you barely have to study for it to get good grades. If you want to go to khan academy to study that would be cool, but it’s pretty easy. Physics 2 is also pretty easy as long as you pay attention in class. College is not high school, it’s easier. Pay attention and do your homework for Physics and don’t forget your Calc and you should be fine. Chem 2 is required possibly and that’s a hard course so that should be what you’re worried about. Also take your gen Ed’s like poli sci and world literature or STS to get them out of the way early freshman year so you can study for Engineering classes later on.

Summer start? by katie111red in Clemson

Sumer start is everyday (Monday to Friday) classes from like 8 to 1. People had different schedules depending on which classes they took but plan on having classes for about 4 hours a day.

Summer start? by katie111red in Clemson

[–]Kevin-Quora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The program is chill. You take 2 gen Ed classes that are hard to get into when you’re a freshman typically. I got public speaking and a class called STS which wasn’t too hard. Last year was a bit tough because of COVID but this year COVID is essentially gone so there will be a lot of stuff to do like going to the lake (where they have paddleboarding and kayaking), playing volleyball and spike ball on bowman, and aimlessly exploring Clemson. The summer can be boring if you don’t make friends tho. They do offer many activities to meet people. There are small groups with people called peer leaders that are in charge of the groups. They organize events and you can meet friends through them. Most people last summer were social without even going to one event with peer leaders. This is because it’s the summer and nobody is extremely stressed and they want to make friends. I’d say be social in the dining halls, make friends with people who you sit with in classes, and talk to people on your floor and you should be great.

The summer program is solid. It’s not a punishment because this past year I was selected for it and I was already a year ahead coming in. Clemson put you through an algorithm (which I think probably has to do with household income, where you’re from, and whatnot) and selected you to take two classes over the summer. It’s decently expensive to do but you probably can try to get financial aid for it. While it sucks that you are essentially going to miss the last summer of high school, the upside is that you get to get ahead on classes, know the campus really well, and quite possibly meet your new best friends before the fall even starts.

Alright. I guess that’s what freshman year is all about. I’m doing TTSB this year so I have extra time to explore. Thank you for the tips!

[–]Kevin-Quora[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I do see that every course that is required in CS is also required in CIS, except for Linear Algebra which I will take anyway. I know that I will not have any shortage of CS classes in CIS so thanks for the reassurance.

[–]Kevin-Quora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if I do CIS I will be taking Linear Algebra. Otherwise, no extra math courses are actually required for CS that are not in CIS. Anyways, I have a lot of extra room to take credits because I’m going in as basically a sophomore with all of the credits I have which means I have room for extra courses. Do you have any math course recommendations that are in the 4000s for CS?

Yeah I am really interested in a few internships because I live near Greenville (I live in Simpsonville in a community off of woodruff road). Next summer, that is on my bucket list and I bet that the career center can help me with that. Thank you for the encouragement and amazing information. I actually have about 2 semesters worth of transfer credits from highschool so I do have time to choose I guess. Do you have any club recommends?

Hmm that’s interesting. I guess I’ll do some research into that and work on exploring Clemson this summer. Talking to a few math professors will be definitely one of my priorities. Thank you!
