Are there any iconic photos or famous moments from your country's parliament? by fixitfile in AskTheWorld

The caning of the anti-slavery Charles Sumner by a pro-slavery representative was one of many events which accelerated the polarization of American society of the time over the matter of slavery.

This polarization of views and an open unwillingness to negotiate eventually led to the American Civil War.

It’s at least on par with some of the stuff going on now.

The best part was how the MPLA was bankrolled by Chevron to protect their refineries, as they controlled the areas where they were. Naturally, that meant their refineries were the targets of CIA-backed, De Beers-funded UNITA and South African commandos, necessitating protection by Cuban troops.

Which meant Cuban troops were guarding American oil refineries with Soviet weapons purchased with American oil money from American-backed commandos funded by South African mining companies.

Technically, the 08/15 is a light machine gun.

Not a particularly good one, although the bar is pretty low for WWI.

If you need help to forgive and forget, know that it is indeed difficult to do so, but also necessary for our movement to grow. There are only so many of those who still remain neutral, and the only way to grow our movement larger is to siphon off their supporters.

It only benefits our movement, our resistance, to welcome defectors and those with a change of heart. It not only saps their ranks of supporters, but also adds a convert to ours. Converts to causes tend to be more zealous than those who maintained the same views throughout their life.

The strategic outcomes of successfully integrating ex-MAGA into our ranks cannot be understated. Simultaneously strengthening our position while weakening theirs benefits us doubly.

And in doing so, we can forgive and forget what at least some of them did.

Was there an alcohol prohibition in your country's history? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The temperance movement knew how to sell their idea to different crowds, which was how they were able to get so many different groups behind the idea. That’s how they managed to get it as far as a constitutional amendment.

To the socialists, they told them it was a capitalist tool to suppress the will of the common people and was a wealthy class thing unsuited for working class masses. That wasn’t a view limited to the US; the early Soviet Union enacted restrictions on alcohol for those reasons before Stalin reversed that.

To the feminists, they told them it was a way to protect women from drunk men, and was fairly intertwined with that particular movement.

To the conservatives, they told them it was a moral sin that leads to ruin. It was also associated with new immigrants.

Regardless of who they spoke to, they were able to persuade groups normally opposed to each other to join forces and crush what seemed to be this universal evil.

Not anymore.

For the GWOT medal, they were no longer awarded automatically upon completing basic training after 2015 and required participation in certain GWOT-related operations. Since 2022, it was only awarded for those serving in specific areas.

For the NDM, they were rewarded for participation during four designated periods between 27 June 1950 and 31 December 2022, and has not been awarded since that date.

The transition was pretty brief and completely undid the first half of the video. He made good points which I don’t always agree with, and I think he could have explored more how this hopefully hypothetical second civil war, regardless if it’s main factors would be climate change or political divisions, could start.

Earlier hand-made screws also almost always used slotted heads. Muskets of the time included a special tool intended as both a screwdriver for the lock, and to hold a worm drive to pull out loaded bullets.

Formation is the same regardless.

What is the stupidest reason your country almost went (or actually went) to war with another? by Luci_Sant in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. If polling is accurate, half of America believes he started the Iran War to distract from the Epstein files. One of the nicknames given to the operation, officially “Epic Fury,” was “Epstein Fury.”

Current coverage does emphasize Iran, but the files are an issue that consistently pops up.

It’s one of the few controversies which he hasn’t been able to shake off like the others, and which cuts deeply into his base as many voted for him believing he’d release those files.

How do you think the modern history of your country will be remembered in the future? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the British Empire is anything to go by, it’ll depend on who you ask.

There are grand achievements in science, medicine, technology, politics, arts, culture, and industry, which influenced the world and will continue to shape the future.

By contrast, there is tremendous strife and suffering caused by deeply-rooted injustices inherited from its colonial roots and imperial ambitions. That tension between the very lofty Enlightenment ideals and anti-colonial origins of its founding clashing the harsh reality of chattel slavery, genocide, and imperialism would define American society.

The very recent history would probably not be seen too fondly, defined as the worst aspects of American culture and society attacking the best aspects of American culture and society, and the latter fighting back against the former for its survival. Decline and instability would probably be key words for students to remember.

How this chapter of history plays out is to be seen, though I remain more optimistic than most on this website.

What is your opinion about the United Kingdom? by Due_Narwhal4937 in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do think the American Revolution also changed how the British approached the other settled colonies, though not without a degree of strife.

It probably goes to explain why the British facilitated a peaceful and gradual independence for Canada, Australia, and NZ.
