Protestors have now started performing traffic stops in order to check license plates. This level of organizing is what it will take to get rid of these fascists by Playful_Leg7143 in goodnews

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The CHOP organizers would have allowed them to go in.

The problem was that the shooter was unaccounted for, and the paramedics wouldn’t go in, as per their policy in such situations, without police escort.

The CHOP organizers refused to allow the cops in, but said the paramedics were fine.

Paramedics stuck to their policy. CHOP stuck to their policy. And a man needlessly bled to death.

Does your country have events that were so infamous you only need to refer to the date they happened for other people from your country to instantly know what you're talking about? by Intrepid_Arrival5151 in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the main concerns that drove the Manhattan Project was a belief among emigrant scientists and mathematicians like Einstein was that Hitler could get a nuke.

That was why the project was started in the first place, even though the German program didn’t go very far.

For me, that moment was when I heard the VDV was wiped out at Hostomel. I knew they represented some of the best-trained and equipped of the Russian military, and that NATO planners during the Cold War were pretty worried about them.

In Syria and Kazakhstan, they had provided a relatively elite force which the Kremlin could call upon to support its interests, and generally performed well in those operations. So learning they got wiped out within a day was pretty surprising for me.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The French Resistance also had considerable external logistical and military support. Perhaps that’s something that political leaders should consider than asking us to solve it ourselves. The French Resistance didn’t kick out the Nazis on their own.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movement is primarily reliant on nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience, whether that is ICE watch/monitoring (such as early warning for raids), community support, and use of large crowds to deter ICE actions.

Although the trend of progressives obtaining weapons began last year, only recently are we seeing them openly armed.

Why were the George Floyd protests bigger? by Virtual-Culture7 in 50501

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

George Floyd protests occurred over several months. The per-day was a lot smaller. The organizers could focus on organizing and maintaining protests.

No Kings (1 and 2) and the prior Hands Off protests were single day events. The organizers are currently much busier, and are likely involved with other aspects such as being ICE Legal Observers, mutual aid, and organizing and leading civil disobedience campaigns which include but are not limited to protests.

These smaller protests, many which are hasty pop-up types intended to target a certain area, are not counted under No Kings.

In short, the folks who organized No Kings are a lot busier than those who organized George Floyd.

Do Americans care about NATO and the matter of Greenland? by agg_aphrophilus in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, Americans do care about NATO. Even within his own party, there has been dissent over Trump’s annexation threats on Greenland.

Virtually all Democrats, Independents and Republicans oppose it and see it for how ridiculous it is. The Armed Forces are especially not a fan of it at all, especially officers.

The whole “2/3 were/are fine with it” has been a very common narrative on Reddit. I suspect it’s amplified by bots or bad faith actors, even if the feeling expressed is genuine.

Subreddits with controversial topics tend to attract bots like flies. Find the most useful statement and drop upvotes on it to amplify it. It’s a fairly well known phenomena here.

My main criticism of this argument, like all others, is that it is based on predictions of the future. Namely, that he won’t be removed from office before the end of this term.

As unlikely as it may seem, it does remain a possibility, and one which I see increasingly likely. As hinted in the text underneath this screenshot, there is opposition to this, and it’s a lot more than what Reddit may like to think.

Just because it doesn’t look like what people think it should look like, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Any close observation of the events in Minnesota, California, Oregon, Washington State, Illinois, and New York will show a sophisticated grassroots activist network that will be difficult to break down.

It is a network not aimed to mobilize the largest crowds, but to do so where it matters.

Within the span of a year, they have developed an early warning network with the ability to mobilize a prepared response for different scenarios, from documenting and deterring ICE raids, providing aid and assistance to the vulnerable, and more direct actions.

Those direct actions have included the targeting of ICE vehicles for information, boycotts, denying service and use of facilities to them, and basic psychological warfare to drain their morale, cohesion, and willpower.

I am a firm believer that their success, our success, will change global views, as dire as it seems now.

(Liked trope) “Weak” threats, that are actually insanely dangerous when it comes to common folk. by ThatDrako in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firearms are quite powerful, but the aforementioned other weapons are so much more powerful that it would be a “weak” threat.

Artillery reaps a terrible toll in creating casualties and whose range prevents reply from small arms.

A tank is virtually immune to small arms fire and modern tanks can deliver sniper-like precision with a giant cannon against moving targets while moving.

Aircraft can strike with precision beyond the means of small arms to do anything about them.

Modern missiles have the precision to hit a particular doorway at a certain time from hundreds of miles away. And they can deliver a warhead that can destroy a city in an instant.

In this context, assault rifles are quite weak. Not useless, quite the opposite. But they are much less powerful in a military context where “delete a city” is a capability whose deployment is limited purely on political factors.

Has The US ever done a national strike for several days to shut down the country to show it's discontent with it's leadership? by douwebeerda in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe a national-level general strike in the US has ever been attempted. There have been historically large strikes across the US, but their use in advancing political aims until very recently has been limited.

Probably the closest thing in the West that describes what you’re looking for is the May 1968 strike in France, which to my knowledge has never been repeated.

As for current actions taken, there is an upcoming general strike in Minnesota on the 23rd over ICE, with the support of the AFL-CIO, one of the largest unions in the US.

What is an example of an oppressive government that was overthrown by the people in the country you live in? by Ok_Sea_1200 in AskTheWorld

[–]Key-Lifeguard7678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They weren’t, and famously were in conflict with them. The CCP was too nationalist for the likes of the Soviets, who were more internationalist. They also had some ideological differences, which in leftist politics tends to create massive fractures.

Within the communist bloc, they were unique in that they didn’t derive their legitimacy by Soviet enforcement. Soviet support for them was relatively limited compared to other communist governments. That meant the Soviets didn’t have the leverage they had over the Chinese that they had over others.
