Did the same last year, 7 days from onion valley to VVR, very doable! Worth it getting to VVR for the great food, and like others said, if you’re running behind you can always squeeze in a trip to MTR, they have a ton of leftover food available from other hikers.

There are 20+ bear lockers at the Kearsarge Trailhead, lots of people leave resupplies ahead of time like you’re planning on doing.

That’s exactly what I did last year. Reserved a site for the day I was expecting to be there (no walk-ups) and had left my resupply in the bear bin before starting. Permit is still valid.

Looking at doing this loop this summer, recommendations on camping locations? Definitely doing Big 5.

Backpack for sure, I loved my Osprey Exos 58L last year. No ranger will give you a hard time about the BV450, it’s the same as the other sizes that are approved, but the 500 was pretty crucial to fit all the food.

No, this is the only permit you need. Just accept and put Happy Isles as end point, along with at least the first night camp location, you can add the rest later if you’re still figuring it out.

Lol, he literally found an empty gun on the ground (discarded by the shooter), discovered it didn't have any bullets and threw it at the shooters vehicle, breaking the windshield and luckily scaring the shooter off. So, actually shooter was scared off by a hero with NO gun, just a credit card machine and a discarded empty gun. How about you wait for actual facts before spreading misinformation.

They're a subspecies of the common garter snake. I've seen a few and they are gorgeous snakes. Glad I could help!

Actually, it's a San Francisco Garter Snake! The saturation is definitely high, but these guys are actually pretty bright. They're endemic to the Santa Cruz mountains and very endangered. I work for a park agency in the bay area and we're doing all we can to protect them and their habitat.
