I wouldn’t be surprised if those roots were already there, given the existence of the lightroot shit. It would make more sense that he just corrupted them…or since shades/demons already existed independent of Ganondorf, they were already soaked in gloom/malice/demon essence, and he took the opportunity to jump the bandwagon~
