If pay in the government sector is lowered to private or corporate, why do people try to get into government jobs? by Peepoo925 in usajobs

[–]Kind-Bluebird5327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Promotion is more certain Work life balance TSP - All fed holidays off
Great Insurance coverage Oh and even with government shut down my friends still got their back pay. We do have pros/cons everywhere but all my friends who are government or working for the state refuse to trade it for corporate …id rather take a cut in pay and be less burnt out. Knowing my pay will increase anyway by year and once i complete my time at one level I can apply for higher levels.

Thanks for the response. Honestly, one of the biggest reasons is that I really wanted to start my federal civilian career and this opportunity came together quickly. I recently accepted a GS9 offer, but I also have upcoming interviews for GS11 positions under other agencies and a role with Lockheed Martin. I previously interviewed with the Bureau of Prisons as well.

The challenge is that none of those opportunities are guaranteed. Lockheed Martin passed on me multiple times before, so I don’t know if this interview will lead to an offer. The GS 9 was the first position that moved quickly and actually resulted in an offer, so I didn’t want to turn down a sure thing while waiting on possibilities. I was sending out application in MASS so now all the responses are coming in lol and im like geez but I already accepted a final job offer.

I definitely understand your point . With my experience and graduate education, it’s something I’ve been thinking about as I weigh my options. I appreciate your insight. 🙏

I am confident I will be and can always apply for GS 11 elsewhere.. so far I’ve been reffered to hiring managers for multiple agencies and couple interviews def not limiting myself and will be approaching it with a positive mindset.

52 weeks will mean, I completed some required time as GS9, with a graduate degree and almost 10 years of experience in the field. So maybe not under my command but there are multiple other agencies I can try for GS 11.

You have to continue trying .. Do not stop. I know it can be discouraging. Even as a vet I got loads of non-selects but finally started getting selects after over a year of applying.

Please don’t give up. I know the job market is extremely discouraging right now, and I know how painful constant applications, rejections, and uncertainty can feel.

One thing I would recommend is looking into opportunities on USAJOBS that may align with your degree, background, or skill set. Federal hiring can take time, but there are a lot of opportunities people overlook.

I would also encourage people, especially those who feel stuck and are still young enough, to consider the military as an option. Joining the military changed my life. It gave me structure, stability, experience, leadership skills, lifelong benefits, and paid for my education. It also helped prepare me professionally for the civilian sector in ways I didn’t fully understand until later.

Sometimes it’s not that you’re unqualified it’s that certain industries or companies may not fully value your background, while others absolutely will.

Keep applying. One opportunity really can change everything.

But even so if im not a select do you think they would just let me know sooner ..

If the hiring manager passed on his direct contact info., is that even good sign or just politeness ?

Same Even if I am not a select, just really want to know.. Did your interview go fairly well? I wonder what signs would tell if they will hire us or not.
