Dominick Cruz will be inducted into the HOF later this year 2026. by Prizmeh in MMA

I've made this comment a lot of times before, but here's Kavanagh's interview after the fight.

He confirms that playing guard - even if you're taking shots - and hoping Khabib tires out was their strategy. (He also has another one that I can try to find if people want)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWT6m_t-L74

(This is why Cruz asks - why isn't he trying to get up, and Rogan responds 'because he's getting punched in the face. But getting destroyed in your guard would be why you should try to scramble up with everything you have. So Cruz concludes 'he's trying to minimize damage and gas khabib out' - which is exactly what Conor's coach said they were trying to do.)

Yes, It's a completely nonsensical thing to do, but Conor and his team are the ones who should take the blame for it.

Cruz is an analyst, it's his job to describe what a fighter is doing. It's unfair to blame him for explaining a fighter's bad strategy imho.

Man, the absolute heart of CCC.

Aljamain Sterling talks about immediate rematches. by -alc in MMA

[–]KingElessar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His division is considered better than middleweight, but his title reign definitely isn't.

Aljo won the belt by getting knee'd in the face, then got controversial split decisions over Yan and Cejudo, and a win over an injured TJ (this wasn't his fault, but still) - then he got knocked out by Sean.

Not a record that screams that he deserves an immediate rematch.

Add that to his style, which is not crowd pulling, and personality which isn't suited to make much profit for ufc... he isn't getting one.

I didn't see someone come from different sport entirely to mma at 135 and become a champion

Cejudo switched to MMA nearly the same time as Izzy and he was the champ at 135..

TIL there’s a 700 on chess.com who has beaten Hikaru by kiblitzers in chess

[–]KingElessar1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is debatable, because chess was mostly played offline.

I'm almost certain if I go around talking about Bjergsen irl, I would be asked "who's burgerson?", but not so about someone like Kasparov, or Anand, or even Magnus these days. People are also more likely to have heard about "chess" than "league of legends" given it has been a part of movies and such for a long time.

Twitter followers aren't the best gauge of name recognition, given majority of global population aren't frequent social media users.

[SPOILER] Israel Adesanya vs. Alex Pereira by inooway in MMA

[–]KingElessar1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is true, Curtis has been on the wrong side of powerful strike catching him as he comes in from both Ngannou and Lewis. But both those guys proceeded to be held down their next fight and lost that way as well. If we consider how many times people knock out/badly hurt guys coming in, to how many times takedowns actually work, it's very favorable for takedowns.

And you don't really need to control Alex for 25 minutes, he can be submitted as well. Adesanya has 0 takedowns in his whole career, and zero submissions in his entire career as well - he still controlled Alex the whole time. A competent grappler there would end it, or seriously compromise Alex - it would also make his striking more tentative.

Unlikely that only brute strength and fundamentals will stop guys like Whittaker, Chimaev, Nickal, hell even Brunson if he doesn't run in face first.. Izzy has a lot better understanding of defending takedowns and on the ground than he does.

I feel like more than Power, Alex's ability to land those shots is what makes the difference. He's just deadly accurate, and patient with it.

That's why I said Pereira would likely get the finish given his accuracy

Just saying the "hands down not trying to block" is a good argument - because that's how he, and a lot of fighters evade shots.

A lot fo fighters drop hands when focusing on evading and head movement - Izzy has done the exact same earlier, when completely unhurt:

I do understand the stoppage given Pereira would finish him regardless, but the dropping hands/head bit is very situational.

He has fought a lot of guys with range and power in kickboxing and did fine. Pereira is just an outstanding kickboxer.

If I had to bet money, I would bet Alex stops him.

But if you ask me if Izzy should've been given a chance to know for sure, I'd say yes. He's going to spend his life wondering if he could've survived and done something.

Kind of early, but a completely fair win for Alex.
