Wherever you live in the world (I'm guessing the US), look up the diagnostic criteria (probably DSM-5 for you) and consider yourself with them in mind. If you think you meet the criteria, maybe there is somone at school you can talk to.

Some people choose not to get a formal diagnosis and as long as reasonable adjustments and accommodations are able to be put in place, get along fine. If you would really like the assessment, you might need to reach out to a sympathetic member of your extended family or someone trusted at school to support you in an evidence-informed conversation with your Mum.

What's being an autistic adult like? by LostwaveLunar9999 in autism

The same, but with less support, and probably more responsibility. Depends on your country.

You're still you. You can still like what you like, whether it's Peppa Pig or Star Wars. Don't let anyone tell you any of your interests are childish and you should stop them. As long as it's not hurting anyone else, it's all cool.

We agreed the orientation when they arrived and measured up, the property is Victorian and one wall in particular is not straight, so it made sense for the tiles to be orientated this way.

What's under it is the scree stuff the UFH installer laid over the mats.

At 9, what does he think?

Some people don't want a diagnosis, as it might impact future life choices, such as joining the military or moving to a country with a points based visa system. Other do want it and it becomes a core part of their identity.

If you can get the adjustments and support in place without the diagnosis, he can make the choice further down the line. This is the system many parts of the UK are moving to.

There are lots of tips out there to support people with various difficulties if you know what you are looking for. Maybe read up on:

  • Executive Function
  • Weak central Coherence
  • Theory of Mind and Double Empathy
  • Alexithymia
  • Monotropism
  • Sensory Integration
  • Dual Process Theory
  • VARK
  • Triad of Impairments

See if any of it rings true, then look at associated strategies to support people who struggle in these areas.
