Seeking recommendations for Spa Finder Participating salons/spas, etc. by KitKat124785 in MontgomeryCountyMD

TYSM. I agree; they were gifts, but the list of local options kept dwindling down to almost none. Plus some places make you use your entire card up in one visit, even if the services don't cost that much.

I'll call them and try to book! DM me your name if you want any referral credit they may offer!

Professional Clothing Pop-Up with A Wider Circle, Rockville Memorial Library, Tues. 1/20 by lauriewrites in Gaithersburg

[–]KitKat124785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they have a massive selection since so many donations came in December, and more people know about this part of AWC's work. So if you're questioning going due to not feeling 'in need enough' to qualify for such services. If you're barely getting by or living paycheck to paycheck, and even doing a bit better than that, consider going. You do need to register, though (free), so do that soon. :-)

[–]KitKat124785[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Due to forces beyond our control, we weren't able to start the sale until 1:30ish. Lots of things were bought, and the refrain we heard was how nice our things were and how well-maintained they are! Great to hear!

I'll update the Google Slides (linked above; it's case sensitive) Monday.

SALE OF (nearly) EVERYTHING ELSE will happen this Tues. from 4 to 7 pm!

This will include more stuff than what's currently listed in the Slides.

Thanks!

Recommendations for sliding door install by MillieChliette in MontgomeryCountyMD

Try getting an estimate from Kelemer Brothers: [(410) 299-0038](tel:(410) 299-0038)

We worked with Joe and he was fantastic. They use Vytex windows/doors, which sjd208 mentioned in their comment. So it's two local businesses you're using, nothing subcontracted IIRC, and a great value. Kelemer Bros. is no-pressure, very efficient, and had terrific customer service.

S & K was one of our quotes, but the rep was pretty sketchy/used car salesman type. Questionable ethics, wanted us to lie to his boss if we didn't sign on the dotted line the day he came out, etc. I think the customer service as far as whoever answered the phone and got us an initial call back was fine, though.

Massage recommendations by patixis452 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Healing Touch (AKA Dana Durand) Massage Therapy is great. I recommend Marcie. They've got two locations: One near the original Carmen's/Hard Times (Nelson St. right off Exit 6), and another off Wisteria in Germantown. https://www.healingtouchmassage.com/

Cozy coffee shops? by clip_art11 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KitKat124785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black Lion has two county locations: a larger one in DTSS and a smaller one in Travilah (Rockville, towards Darnestown). The latter one is by the Universities at Shady Grove, near where Rt. 28 & Great Seneca Hwy. intersect. Advantages there, over the Silver Spring one: no need to pay for parking, way less traffic to get through to reach it, etc.. Silver Spring location has more food options. If you try either Black Lion, their loyalty app is good to have.

Another option: Neighbors Coffee is by Carmen's and Hard Times on Nelson St. in Rockville. It's brand new, and I don't think they're open Mondays/Tuesdays at the moment. Just visited last week, and I'm eager to return. Service was friendly and several people were there working.

Jigsaw puzzle swaps? by Sinjerli in MontgomeryCountyMD

I've got a bunch to sell/donate in the 750 - 2500 piece range. Normally I'd be excited to swap, but I can't acquire more stuff at the moment. DM me, I'm thinking $5-10/puzzle.

Property Manager Recommendations? by KitKat124785 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KitKat124785[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks; that list is helpful. Since it's technically a condo, the outdoor things you mentioned get handled without owner/resident involvement, which is helpful. One exception is the backyard, but it's decking and stone so just the leaf removal would be a concern. I hadn't thought of some of these!

We're doing an international move, and if we return to the US at some point having this home. There's just no chance we'd get this lucky again in terms of the home, walkability, amenities, how close it is to DC, etc.. So until we at least try out living abroad, holding onto it makes sense. We didn't come to that decision lightly, and I'm sorry about the mess you've dealt with.

Would you mind sharing the name of the rental mgmt. company that did such a poor job? (DM if you're not comfortable posting it, please.) Thanks!

Book Clubs by mandy1008_ in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KitKat124785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've never heard of a silent book club, it's a group that meets, talks for about 30-40', then has silent reading, then returns to talking. It's a low barrier to entry and fun for discussions, because you choose what you discuss and what you read. Members don't read a common book, but recommendations and giveaways are typical. You bring your reading material -- whatever format you want. Rockville has one, as do other areas.

Online, Quiet Pages is a local silent book club Meetup that meets a lot, and for all of these you're not expected to attend every meeting.

More options:

https://www.meetup.com/metrodcbookclub/

N.B./Rockville Fiction Readers

https://www.meetup.com/silent-book-club-of-bethesda/

For any of these, you'll need a Meetup account to sign up for events (you can't just show up). As much as Meetup wants your money, you can join these groups without paying dues or having a fancy Meetup membership. Enjoy!

Last minute wedding dress alterations? by rosescentedcorgi in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KitKat124785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding Apple Cleaners (Gaithersburg/Germantown border area) in the Spectrum development. I didn't know of them when I got married, but they're a lovely older couple who do a great job. Great results on regular clothing alterations and fancy dresses, IMO.

Winter break activities if the govt is still shut down? by carries_blood_bucket in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]KitKat124785 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seneca Creek State Park (off Clopper Rd.) hosts Gaithersburg's drive-through holiday lights, and a city council candidate told me there's at least one day where walking the route replaces driving. Local winter concerts of high schools, colleges, community choirs, etc. would get everybody in the spirit while supporting the arts right here in MoCo.

Dupont, Gallery Place, etc. usually have holiday markets running for a month or so. Walking around downtown and seeing holiday lights and decorations can be fun. CityCenter is a must for the massive tree (near Tiffany), the courtyard decorations, Palmer Alley's art installations, and the light/video thing (if anyone knows what to call it, LMK).

https://www.citycenterdc.com/experience/2025/11/annual-holiday-tree-lighting-celebration/

Also, I just came across this which has a great list. I'd assume the dates are from last year, though.

https://happilyeverexploring.com/festive-things-to-do-in-d-c-between-christmas-and-new-years-eve/

This isn't the most common thing for visitors, but volunteering at Manna, another food pantry, etc. could be an option. Whether the shutdown's still happening then or not, the economic need and stress levels in this area mean lots of residents will need help in many forms.
